There was a lot to see and "play with" on Chanel's Fall 2013 Superstition Collection display, so I went over the Neiman Marcus at Mazza Gallerie to swatch, photograph, and purchase. I think Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eyeshadow in Mystère (#43, $59) is the centerpiece of the collection - the one piece that will stop shoppers in their tracks.
Here it is on the display. The missing single eye shadow in the first photo is Gri-Gri, a taupe so beautiful, it came home with me. I will get swatch photos soon so that all of you taupe lovers can see that it's worth a purchase.
Mystère is definitely a fall palette. The shades, described by Chanel as golden khaki, golden ivory, matte khaki, and silver taupe, complement each other beautifully - even if their color descriptions aren't spot on.
I think Chanel edited the eye collection for fall with precision. You can use the new Khaki Mascara, shown below, on your lashes, and line your eyes with the beautiful Khaki Prècieux Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer, shown at the bottom of this feature - my pitiful in-store "C" showing it applied lightly.
I swatched each of the eye shadows in Mystère with a sponge-tipped applicator, starting with the gorgeous rich, deep khaki in the upper left-hand corner and moving clockwise around the palette. I took my photos outside Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie store in full, late-morning sun.
This quad delights me. The charcoal khaki, with a golden hue, is intense and perfectly suited to a fall or night eye. This swatch you see is one pass with the applicator, so it's intense, but you can easily blend it out for your seductive, smoky, nighttime look. The golden ivory below it was described well. Unlike some shades in this ivory range, it offers plenty of pigmentation for an even application of your base shade (or highlighter).
The third shade down is the one that Chanel must have described as matte khaki. I find it to be a hybrid khaki taupe/brown shade. It's not matte either. It offers a satin finish - even a slightly sparkly finish. The color is complex and fabulous to my eyes. It's love.
The silvery taupe is worth the entire price of admission. It's the type of shade that leaves me speechless, beyond the first OMG. Although I didn't come home with it today, it will be joining my makeup museum next week, I'm sure (I needed to come home and check my balance...hate this newfound, frugal makeup budget). Did you know that Mystère was available last month on Chanel's Web site? Where was I? Sleeping at the keyboard, no doubt.
Mystère is, in my humble opinion, one of the best quads Chanel has introduced in the last three years. Teaming it with the Khaki Mascara and a golden khaki liner was pure Chanel genius. It's a limited-edition Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eyeshadow, so if you are interested, don't waste any time securing yours. Nicki Hashemi, Chanel representative at Neiman Marcus, would be glad to help you. She's a doll - and a talented artist. You can call Nicki at (202) 966-9700, extension 2236.
The Khaki Prècieux Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer closes this feature with a "C." I hope to add it to my collection. It's a golden khaki - totally different from 2011's Khaki Platine. If you are as much of a khaki fan as I am, you may have trouble leaving it behind at the store. I'm sorry my indoor swatch photo isn't enticing. The liner is.
Have you seen Mystère? What did you think? Did it come home with you? Will you be ordering it? I'll be back later with more from Superstition.
Update: It's mine. I'm going to save it for fall. It will be hard to keep my hands off it.

My counter hasn't received fall yet, but I've got Mystere and the mascara on hold. I can't resist taupes and khakis.
That is an absolutley stunning selection of autumnal shades. Unfortunately for me, khaki shades are extremely difficult to pull off, but this collection is going to look gorgeous on so many of you. Chanel obviously put a lot of thought into the the selection of these four shades. They'll work beautifully together to create some sultry smokiness to herald the arrival of the cooler season. If I could wear colors like these, I'd team them with a delicate peach toned lip and cheek--perfect for crisp autumn days. This quad is simply beautiful.
I went to NM for an unrelated matter and wandered by the Chanel display. Can't believe they have A/W out already but had to go home with Mystere no question. Haven't tried it out yet, but I can't wait for cooler weather!
I would have to agree that Chanel put in a lot of thought on how to put all the colors together. I am not so sure how to use the eye liner...it appears to be a lot lighter then the darkest shade of the eyeshadow palette.
This fall, it seems to be all about the eyes and careful application.
Terrible, I really didn't have an interest in this palette until I saw it on your lovely arm! (I noticed you mentioned on another post that someone had complained to you about your arm - sheesh!) I need to plan out my budget too and pick out just the key things I'd like. Everything cannot go home with me. :)
Hello CG
Could you find out what lip color the model is wearing I'd love to get it?
I love this quad already bought the liner and Gri Gri love them all. You started my makeup collection and your blog is my favorite.
Thank You
Melissa
Greetings from California!
I am leaving for Spain (whoop whoop), in ten days and am wondering Charleston Girl, in your vast experience in obtaining release information for brands I love, especially Chanel, do you know if they release products in Europe BEFORE we see them here in the US?
I'd love to know so I can set aside cash flow accordingly, if you know what I mean. I usually set aside money for new skincare items as well as cosmetics that aren't here yet, and since I am in the know for new release as they relate to the US I like to see if I can get new things before they arrive here in the US while I'm traveling. Spain has a high-end department store chain El Corte Englise which, is like a combination Neiman's, Nordstrom, with gourmet food to boot! I usually make my higher end cosmetic/skincare purchases there only, so I was wondering do you ever find out if the Chanel's, Dior's, etc.. find their way to Europe first, then to the US?
I'd love to hear your input as well as others, if possible.
Been awhile since going to Spain (not since 2010, due to two heart procedures that would't allow me to set foot on a plane), so I'm really looking forward to "loading up" so to speak this time around.
Appreciate any comments, suggestions you may have!
What does the khaki mascara look like on the lashes? Is it more green or brown?
The quad is so beautiful. This is one of the rare Chanel quad in which I like every color in it. Thanks Charlestongirl for showing us the swatches so soon since the collection came out.
Despite my interest in the quad, it's too early for me to think of Fall. I really want to enjoy summer first and get the kick out of using my Métamorphose quad. It's good in a way in that I'll have time to check out the collection in person and make a buy list. Right now I think I'm going to get both Mystère and Khaki Prècieux.
@michelle I've never had the chance to travel to Europe yet, but from visiting many beauty blogs it seems to me that Chanel collections are released earlier in Europe than the U.S. Perhaps others can chime in on this to be for certain. However, there's one thing I would like you to be aware about is that the eye shadow quad is going to be different if you buy it in Europe. In Europe/Asia, Chanel's eye shadow formula is baked (circular pans). The U.S. version comes in square-shaped pans and usually have better pigmentation. I have Métamorphose and it's in Euro formula. The pigmentation is not as good as the rest of my Chanel quads (U.S. version) to be honest. I bought it only because I like the colors.
@Christina I think light-colored eyeliner is best used lining the lower lash line. I'm planning to do so when I get both Mystère and Khaki Prècieux :)
Hi Laci,
You won't regret that.
Eileen, I don't know why you couldn't wear these shades. None of them are traditional khaki.
Hi Lauren,
You could use the taupe now. :)
It is lighter, Christina. I think it will add a golden sparkle to the eyes.
Same for me, Evelyn. I can't keep buying full collections.
Hi Melissa,
I'm fairly sure it's Saga, which I will show tomorrow.
Most makeup companies do not identify what their models are wearing in the seasonal looks. There are many reasons, including the possibility that the artist created the color he/she wanted using multiple shades. Studio lighting and photo retouching play a role too. Even when they tell us what the model is wearing, the shade looks different in real life.
Anyhow, I will ask our regional Chanel rep.
Hi Michelle,
Have fun! Actually, my readers in France say that we usually get the products each season before we do. So...I really don't know.
Anyone?
Hi Anonymous,
It's very khaki. The Chanel artist I was with today recommended using it to top black.
Paige, the liner will look great on the lower lash line.
Unfortunately, the companies all jump the season so much - like in fashion - that if you don't buy now, they will have winter on the counters when you are ready for fall.
This looks beautiful. I love Fall quads far too much. The single shadow looks stunning, as well.
"The silvery taupe is worth the entire price of admission." <-- THIS! It is breathtaking. Thanks for the great swatches as usual.
Thank you everyone. I think getting the eyeliner to wear on the bottom is a great idea!
Thanks for the encouragement, Charlestongirl! Like I really needed it to go check out Chanel :-) Seriously, if these aren't typical khaki tones, I just might get them to work. I love the touch of green amidst all the smokiness. After all, when autumn rolls around, the green, green days of summer are still with us even though they are beginning to fade. I'll definitely have to go play when our local counter gets the collection.
thanks Paige! I appreciate the commentary. I usually don't use eye shadow, as I tend to like a great lip, long lashes, and killer nail color instead of eye shadow, so I won't miss not getting the quad in Spain. My daughter would love it and is quite masterful with multi-colored looks, but she would buy it here, because, let's be honest, it's cheaper, and I love my Chanel SA at my local Nordstrom in Santa Clara, CA.
I currently have Esprit, one of the Rouge Coco Shine colors, in my basket at Neiman Marcus online, and my local Nordstrom already has the creme blushes in stock, so that's good. I purchased Cinema from the latest collection, and will be sporting that on my tips, and Lilas on my toes (or Distraction), I cannot decide.
Thanks for your help!!!
Adios!!
What a gorgeous quad!! Thank you so much for all of your hard work- your readers very much appreciate the swatches and your reviews!
Do you think the quad would work for dark brown eyes? I love the colors, but I am concerned that the quad could "muddy" my eyes. Thoughts?
I cannot wait to see the lip colors!!
Thank you again!!!
The whole collection is stunning!! The quad is a must have!!
This one will be mine, I know for certain, I can't wait...though I'll have to, obviously....Those colors are gorgeous, I agree with you CHarlestongirl, it's certainly the most beautiful quad in those last years...
Michelle, I'm afraid you won't find those beauties in Spain yet, in Europe, fall make-up is released in August...now they are selling summer make-up hoping we will use it sometime since the weather has been so horrible!!!
Melissa,
It's not Saga. It's probably Mystique, but I have asked.
That one screaming my name! I know they all scream my name, but I particularly like greens on myself!! And it's Chanel...So!
Incredibly busy with life right now, but popped by briefly to try and catch up a bit on beauty news. This caught my eye immediately. Isn't this just the most outstanding quad ever and definitely something to look forward to for Fall. Incredibly wearable and flattering, I would think, for many complexions. FANTASTIC! I need this one.
