The Friday Forum - September 9

Have you noticed the beauty and fashion trends for fall? I'm not thrilled with some of them. Here's a short list.
  • Lips: Dark and matte. I'm really not excited about drab, matte lipstick.
  • Eyes: Either natural or glittery. I could leave the glittery to the under-21 set. There was also a fair showing of smoky eyes, but not as prominent as the other looks.
  • Complexion: Glowing. There's a trend I can get behind!
  • Hair: Curls, waves, and hair accessories. I can't do any of them with my straight bob. The humidity of late is killing my hair style.
  • Clothing: Jewel colors that are, in general, gorgeous. I would kill for the Ralph Lauren blue velvet coat I see every time I open a magazine. Click on the photo below to enlarge it and look at the ornamentation.

If I had to sum up my impression of the autumn season (to date), I'd say I'm only half-way onboard. That's OK, I'm too old to be a fashion victim and too poor to buy every trend. How do you feel about the season's showings?

Don't forget that Neiman Marcus' Beauty Event started yesterday and ends on September 18. The totes that are yours with a $125 purchase are available in silver and black and have a paltry number of samples inside. At least the totes are nice. As always, the GWPs are yours for a dear price. Most of them start with a purchase between $100 and $300, and many of them are tiny samples, rather than deluxe samples or full-sized products. The best I saw? Le Métier de Beauté has all new products in theirs, and they are really nice. The only two I merited were LMdB and Tom Ford. If you want help, please call my friends - given the salary cuts imposed on everyone in Beauty, they need the commissions! Michael Reinhardt and Debbie O'Malley at (202) 966-9700. Ask for their counters. Tell them I sent you and said they would send you a few extra samples.

It's time for the Friday Forum. The Friday Forum has always been an opportunity to share information. Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Tell us about it! Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Tell us why! Do you have questions others might be able to answer? We can help! Want to talk about skin care? I'm game. Just use the comments. We have busy weekends and slow ones on the forum. I hope to see you in the comments.

Autumn! My favorite season of all! It was fun to read your takes, Charlestongirl, on various fall trends, so here are my reactions:

Lips: Dark, matte. My reaction in a word is "Ugh!" The dried out, blackened lips look like something dead. Normally I'm pretty easy-going about trends and I don't need to wear them to find them attractive on other people. In fact, just the other day I complemented a young woman on her emerald green lips :-) When it comes to gothic dark and matte, though, I think something has to give. Lighten the color a bit or add a satin sheen to the blackened color. Do something!

Eyes: Neutral or glittery. I'm good with both since a have a large moveable eyelid and can easily rock a hint of ultra-fine glitter like Tom Ford's fairy dust. It's all about the placement. What I don't like, though, is the arts 'n craft glitter look that we see on Instagram and YouTube. They're fun, but not for "real life". As for neutrals, since I did order TF's new A/W 16 duo, that answers that!

Complexion: Glowing. I'm right there with you, Charesltongirl, and what I find so wonderful about the new glow is that it is soft and doesn't read as shiny, greasy, etc--unless, of course, you're also going crazy with highlighters. The older I get, the more I need to diffuse the light and let my natural complexion show through. I remember those flawless, velvet complexions of the 50's and early 60's but my skin is so much drier now and I could never pull it off. I occasionally see one of those older ladies with a flat, dull "Baby Jane" complexion and it ain't pretty!

Hair: Curls, waves, accessories. I have long, straight hair which reaches anywhere from two-thirds of the way down my back to my waist depending on whether or not I've gotten around to asking my dear husband to trim it for me :-) Most of the time I wear it down or in a loose chignon. Occasionally, though, I like to switch it up by loosely braiding my hair while still damp, letting it air dry, and then gently combing it out into loose waves. As for hair accessories, I remember wearing all kinds of flower clips, feathers and beads, and other assorted dingle-dangles in my hair back in the 70's. Would I do it again? Are you kidding me? LOL

Clothing: Jewel colors. I love autumn's traditional palette and find this year many of the shades actually seem to be leaning a bit more towards winter. The blues and violets are gorgeous. I also noticed a lot of "duster" length jackets and vests which look spectacular on the tall models but which make me look like a munchkin.

Random thought: I wish Chanel would reissue Troublant lip lacquer from Fall 2012. I just can't seem to get that color out of my mind. It was everything I love about autumn. Have a great weekend, everyone.

I'll play. :) But then I have a question.

Dark Matte Lips? Nope. Tom Ford's Bruised Plum is as dark as I'll go, and I never do a matte lip. Definitely don't care for green, blue, grey, lipstick either on myself or others unless it's Halloween.

Glittery eyes? Only on the young in the evening. Like Eileen, I think Tom Ford's "adult glitter" is great, and I wear it.

Glowy complexion? Still working on this. I'm oily through my t-zone and have yet to master the glowy-not-oily balance.

Curly hair? Yes, please! My hair is naturally super curly and most days I let it do its thing. Now I'm in fashion!

As for clothing, jewel tones look best on me, so I'm on board. Love the velvets and brocades being shown too.

Okay, now for my question. What's your favorite eye primer? My lids are oily and I've been through several years of alternating between Urban Decay's primer potion and NARS pro-prime (which is funny because I don't own a single other product from either of those lines). Over the summer, both have failed me. Suggestions?

Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

Matte lips. Try Dior Couture Rouge lipsticks. They are nice.

For my oily T-zone I've been using Dr. Brant's Pores No More Anti Aging moisturizer. It works to control oily shine without drying my skin. During the summer I use Mac's Paint Pots in Painterly or Soft Ochre as an eyelid primer and change to the Urban Decay anti aging primer during winter.

I enjoyed reading your summary of the fall trends. I may do matte lips a little bit and some glitter a la Tom Ford and also welcome the wavy/curly hair trend. Just two days ago, I asked my stylist about the new trends and he also said wavy/curly. It will be nice to have a variety, not only straight hair. As for hair accessories, there are some rather sophisticated ones (clips, barrettes etc.) and I see European women wear them with great panache - so it really depends on the item.
Eileen, I am going to dig out Troublant :)
Have a great weekend,
Tanja

Bookgirl;Le Metier Eye Brightening & Setting Powder & PRIMER. Sales copy from Le Metier website says:

"Eye Brightening and Setting Powder uses a lightweight, fine milled luminous pigment, formula that creates the perfect canvas for flawless skin. Renowned for illuminating the entire eye area and brightening dark circles, this compact powder can be used as a primer and a brightener. Alternately, Brightening and Setting Powder is an ideal eye base for all eye shadow application. Instantly brightens the eye with a texture in between cream and powder. This formula creates a smooth refined texture locking shadow onto the eye."

I use this everyday, whether I am using eye-shadow or not as it hides all imperfections in my eye area. It is such a fine-milled powder and it goes on beautifully. It stays on all day too. If I have a NO make up day, this goes on along with a soft dewy like moisturizer for a totally natural look. Le Metier is one company that seems to never fail me in treatments and now this primer/setting powder.

Helloooo Autumn! The welcome mat is out awaiting your arrival! My thoughts on the fashion trends...
Lips: dark and matte may be beautiful and sultry on a zombie, but not a flattering look on anyone else. Young girls who want to look edgy might be able to get away with it, but it doesn't look good on them either.
Eyes: neutral or glittery. I'm firmly on Team Neutral with a bit of barely there shimmer
Complexion: glowing absolutely! I prefer achieving this mostly through skin care rather than highlighting products, but I understand the appeal.
Curly hair: I love it! But I do think embracing whatever texture (not necessarily color!) God gave you is the way to go.
Clothing: I love deep bottle green, midnight, golds and lush textures. Funny thing though, my fall and winter wardrobe is primarily greys and black with color as an accent.
Favorite eye primer: By Terry hyaluronic eye primer. I'm on my second tube and it won't be my last.

Charlestongirl said...

My favorite eye primer? Edward Bess. I wear shade Cashmere.

Well its spring here so I am waiting for warmer weather! LOL
Matte dark lips - No ... for the young ones - glitter eye makeup too.

I would love that Ralph Lauren jacket as I have finally (after 3 attempts LOL ) let my hair go grey... and jewel colours look good with grey hair.

I have a question ..... I finally "belly up" and bought a Chanel Blusher - the round powder one.. they are pretty $$$ in Australia . So.... I do not like it!!! It gets a "film' on it and you have to dig into it to get colour on the brush! Rrrrrr
Has anyone had this happen to their and what can I do ?
* We cannot return makeup here :(

Charlestongirl said...

LadyJicky,

Oh my goodness! I've never had a Chanel blush glaze over. I've had old lipsticks do it. Do you use it enough? Was it one particular color? I can try to see if I can get Chanel to give me a replacement for you. Or I could send a one of mine that was swatched and forgotten. It happens when you have a warehouse of makeup.

If I were you, I would attempt to return it and explain that it's defective. Stores here will take defect returns, even when they have a no-returns policy. They end up getting their money back from the vendor on defective products. I can recommend Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush. I've been wearing it for a year, and I'm in love.

That Ralph coat would look fabulous on anyone, but particularly with light hair, like ours. I didn't look up the price. I'm jobless at the moment, so all I can do is dream.

On the glitter trend, Vogue's picture example showed real glitter in the lashes, not glittery shadow. I can't imagine! The glitter would fall into my eyes, and I'd end up a red-eyed mess.

Charlestongirl said...

Eileen, have you looked for Troublant on eBay? There is an amazing amount of new makeup there, all hoarded to sell for a king's ransome.

Your hair is as long as Gaia's! I don't know how she keeps from sitting on it. I suggested my friend lop off a foot to make it look nice and thick on the ends. I fear my friend didn't like my suggestion. It grows back!

Charlestongirl said...

BookGirl, occasionally I ask my stylist to make my hair curly for a day or two. I love it, but it's so much trouble! You are lucky.

Eye primer: Edward Bess. I can use others, but none are as good on me as Edward's. I use it as a concealer too.

Charlestongirl said...

Nan, I roared when I read your zombe comment. Too funny!

There are many new moisturizers that illuminate without a highlighter. I like Edward Bess, Tom Ford, and Bobbi Brown.

Charlestongirl said...

Trud, that is a good one, but even my LMdB artists don't use it. They use PV Concealer. I think the cream lasts longer. However, if you love it, use it!

Hi lovely Charleston Girl!!! Happiest weekend wishes to you!! I love looking at the Ralph Lauren Models. The clothes are gorgeous and I love the models makeup. I wish that they would list the makeup that the model is wearing. I'm always taking the pictures to the makeup counter to fry to recreate some of the looks. This to to fabulous Eileen...hi Eileen!! I am so very disappointed about the Cle de peau lippies. I was told both by Nordstrom and Cle de peau to return them. Their Fall makeup look was so pretty! Anyway, I found a very nice Chanel salesperson who tracked down a few of my old favorites and sent them to me. I can easily wear their Rouge Allure gloss or a Glossimer and have no issues. The Cle de peau had the colors that Chanel discontinued. Oh well....sigh.....xo to you!! I don't like matte lips at all. I'm still not sure why they are still so popular?! I was told that the Chanel Ink's were shipped out the 6th. They are matte so I guess I will keep waiting to see if there's something I like in their next collections.. I love glitter on my eyes. I've been wearing Tom Ford's Naked Bronze cream and powder eye color everyday. And, I love Chanel's New Moon. I'm not sure if I will be getting anything from Victoria Beckham's collection or order anything else for that matter. I can't stand to return things and I just don't have the time. I will patiently wait for things to come my way. xoxo to you...💋💄❤️

Eileen- From the comparison pictures I have seen on the Sephora BeautyTalk forum, the A/W 16 duo is almost exactly like the lightest and darkest colors from the Nude Dip quad. I don't appreciate when a company does that.

No to the big, craft glitter on the eye. I recently saw a post from a lady on the website Imgur, where she got a piece of glitter in her eye and actually ended up losing her eye. Every time I see a youtuber put glitter on their eye, even supposed eye safe, it worries me. Also no to the matte lips. I haven't bought in and will continue to stick with my YSL Rouge Volupte Shines and Volupte Sheer Candies.

Charlestongirl said...

Dev, I saw that ugly picture on Sephora. Without any knowledge of lighting or application used, there is no way you can draw any conclusions that would prove TF lied, especially given the universal colors. Actually my trained eye saw major differences in finish, and I have to say the photographer should have shaved her arm. I think you have jumped to an unfair conclusion. Regardless, I don't think you should buy anything you don't want. Isn't that your right?

Have you ever had the opportunity to look at the formulation samples from which companies select their new colors? It's mind-blowing! There are hundreds of each color. A given brown may have dozens of lookalikes that differ minimally, and that's just from one formulator. Many companies use multiple formulators. Is it any wonder that there are simlar colors available across the industry? The old "dupe" argument stems from this, which I'm finding tiresome. I think women should shop with a strategy, e.g., I'm running out of my fave chocolate brown, so it's time to buy a new one. Those like me who have to buy the latest and greatest end up with warehouses in their homes, and we spend way too much money.

I cannot imagine the meticulous Mr. Ford sitting down to strategize on deceiving the people who have made him millions.

Nan P said...

Dev - even if the Tom Ford AW 16 duo was half of Nude Dip, (I don't believe they are because the finish looks different)), would that necessarily be a bad thing? Some of us might not have Nude Dip, and would love having just the duo which also costs less. If I didn't have something that was somewhat similar, I'd be all over it!

Charleston Girl, you've mentioned a drugstore mascara that you like. Can you refresh my memory with what it is? Does anyone else have recommendations for a favorite? I've been using Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill and Chanel Le Volume, but it's time to try something new. My lashes are light brown, fine and straight, but long. I want that magic mascara that will curl and add a little volume, not make the lashes feel stiff and not flake during a long day. Please share with me if you think you've found it!

Eileen said...

Hi Dev; Hi Charlestongirl,

I saw the pictures you're talking about and agree with Charlestongirl that there is a difference in the colors and that there is also a difference in the finish. Are the differences enough to warrant purchasing A/W 16 if you already own Nude Dip? I think that depends on a person's coloring, how it interacts with the other products being used, and also on how finely tuned a person's perception of color nuance happens to be. Sometimes the slightest variance can make a significant difference in the finished look. As for swatches, they are helpful guides, but they never tell the whole story which is why it really is better to see a product for ourselves. We often see pictures of side-by-side swatches (usually done on the arm and all too frequently in terrible lighting) that look very much alike, but when we actually apply the product to our eyes, lips, etc., we see it in context and realize that there is a difference in the overall appearance. In the case of TF, we have a couple of colors that are very similar but some people will definitely see a difference. On some people that difference might be of little or no consequence, but on other people that dissimilarity might be the difference between ho-hum and how gorgeous. Bottom line: Buy what you like and wear it in good health :-)

Hey Dev, what you said about glitter in the eye reminded me of when Liz Taylor was filming Cleopatra. She got a glitter shard in her eye and had to be rushed to the hospital to have it removed. I sometimes get very nervous when I see these lovely young ladies doing their fantasy looks with a tone of glitter.

To Lady Jicky
Under Australian Consumer Law if it is Not Fit For Purpose you can return it as long as you have the receipt. Sometimes a credit or debit card statement can be used as proof of purchase but they can knock that back if the item is not identified.
Spent a good chunk of the 1980's returning eyeshadow I was allergic to so developed the habit of keeping my cosmetic receipts for about a year.

Nan, I'll get you those mascara names tomorrow.

Dev said...

Sorry for stating my opinion and pointing out something that not everyone may have seen. I never said they lied. I just said I don't appreciate when companies put out very similar products, and IMO they are. And wow for the comment on the person's arm hair, how gauche. She isn't a blogger and is just giving swatches to help people out. Sorry something natural like arm hair is offensive to you.

Charlestongirl said...

Dev, I'm sorry we offended you, but look at it from my perspective if you will, please. The rules on comments say they cannot refer to other blogs. You referenced a Sephora Board where anyone, even a 14-year-old, can write, and, like a similar one, it is filled with nonsense. I considered your post an attempt to accuse an honorable person of being a crook...over an eye shadow. Had you thrown out a question, rather than an assertion with so-called proof, I would have been fine with your post. I have always had a tendency to jump to the defense of the unfairly accused.

As for that arm hair, I will not apologize. That young woman posts there all the time. She should know better. Some of the Sephora groupies consider themselves experts. That particular photo was ugly, and it clearly showed the color and finish differences in the shadows. She did Sephora's audience no favors.

I am aware that many cosmetics buyers expect new colors with every collection. It will never happen, particularly with neutrals. There's only so far you can go. Tom Ford is considered a creative genius, and if he wanted to use colors in the same families, his own or Maybelline's, that was his right. His show was very well received, including the model's looks. Let's look for the best in beauty together.

BookGirl said...

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your kindness in suggesting eye primers. I appreciate it and am grateful to have a place I can ask questions and have them answered by experienced and educated people.

NanP my favorite mascara is Guerlain's Maxi Lash.

Charlestongirl said...

Everyone, the discussion of Tom Ford's eye shadows is over. I will not be "accepting" any more comments.

While blogging is supposed to be fun for you, it's supposed to be fun for me too. I willingly spend more than I can afford to support this blog for the fun of it. When the fun turns into an "argument," I lose interest.

Please, if you really care, go to a store and compare TF's colors and draw your own conclusions. I'm ready to move on to fun things.

Charlestongirl said...

One more thing, if you wish to see the differences in my photos of Nude Dip, go here. http://bestthingsinbeauty.blogspot.com/search?q=+Nude+dip

Nan P said...

Hello again Charleston Girl, I don't mean to aggravate you, but would you please tell me the name of the drugstore brand mascara you like? Thanks for considering my request.
BookGirl, thanks so much for your suggestion of Maxi Lash - I'll check it out. Have a good week y'all!

Eileen said...

Hi NanP

I second BookGirl's recommendation of Guerlain Maxi Lash (regular formula; not the waterproof one). It provides a bit of lift, length, and curl without the lashes becoming stiff or looking spikey. If you like the look of long, feathery lashes, this is a good one. I usually use just one coat, but for evening, I'll curl my lashes and use two coats. It gives me Elizabeth Taylor eyelashes :-)

Charlestongirl said...

Nan, I wear Maybelline's Define-A-lash, but the non-waterproof one was discontinued. The red tube waterproof one is a reasonable replacement.

Another good one is Cover Girl Lash Blast Clump Crusher. In green tube.

Both are inexpensive. Keep in mind I go for length and don't worry about thickness. My lashes are thick enough, but blonde on the ends.

On the expensive side, I love LMdB's new $42 mascara. That price is ridiculous.
