Coming Attraction: Guerlain 2013 Terracotta Collection

"Terracotta Bronzing Powder is a woman's best friend when the sun’s rays are scarce. The secret to a radiant complexion and a flawless natural-looking glow, this irresistible bronzer can be customized at will. It’s an irresistible ally to any woman wishing to be kissed by the sun.” - Olivier Echaudemaison, Creative Director

The ultimate cult bronzing powder, one Guerlain Terracotta product is sold somewhere in the world every 20 seconds. The sheer magic of this legendary makeup line is its ability to duplicate the illusion of sun on skin with an astoundingly natural-looking glow. Often imitated but never equaled, its secret formula strikes a subtle balance between color and transparency, creating a flawless natural look that lasts all day.

The Terracotta 4 Seasons Bronzing Powder ($75) allows women to create a tailor-made palette for each season. Each powder contains four shades, which can be mixed and blended to create natural color for all times of the year. To enhance the 4 Seasons experience, Guerlain has added four new harmonies of coordinated shades to better accommodate women’s varying complexions. With a total of six shades, Guerlain ensures that all women, fair or dark, can indulge in the pleasure of a Terracotta glow.

These six compacts are shown above. I need at least two of these shades (that's in addition to what I already have, Blondes).
  • 00 Nude
  • 02 Natural Blondes
  • 03 Natural Brunettes
  • 04 Medium Blondes (formerly shade 01 Blondes)
  • 05 Medium Brunettes (formerly shade 02 Brunettes)
  • 08 Ebony
Here's a beauty tip from Guerlain. Apply bronzer powder using Guerlain's no-fail "figure 3 method." Apply your Terracotta Bronzing Powder by tracing a figure “3” on each side of the face - from the forehead down towards the cheeks, then down along the jaw line to the chin and down the neck. For the finishing touch, take a little more Terracotta Bronzing Powder with your brush and sweep it over the raised areas of the face, the places that catch the sun most – the forehead, nose, cheekbones, and chin. The result is an instant glow, the perfect application in only seconds.

Delivering the corrective coverage of a foundation with the sheerness of a powder, Terracotta Skin ($51) allows for a flawless complexion in one step. The silky, lightweight cream powder is composed of soft-focus elastic particles that reflect light in all directions making enlarged pores, fine lines, and other imperfections less noticeable. Apply one dab of this sheer, velvety foundation and smooth it over your entire face. The result is unified, corrected skin enhanced with a healthy glow. Terracotta Skin is available in three shades.
  • 01 Nude (new - one I must have)
  • 02 Blonde
  • 03 Brunette
Terracotta Sun Scrub ($65) is a luscious exfoliator - the perfect accessory to an even, long-lasting tan. Effective for all stages of tanning, the Terracotta Sun Scrub not only prepares the skin for tanning, but helps it retain its sun-kissed look longer. The secret to its success lies in the formula, comprised of three different particles. Upon contact with water, the three particles transform the oil-based gel into a body milk, which works to remove dead cells, massaging the skin and leaving it satin-smooth and radiant - the perfect conditions for tanning. Once the skin is sun-kissed, the Terracotta Sun Scrub works to enhance your tan by increasing its intensity and luminosity.

Terracotta Sunless Self-Tanning Gel ($52) is remarkable for its ultra-penetrating texture. That's why it's back. This two-in-one tinted gel provides a double action: it offers the illusion of an instant tan and moisturized, evened-out skin. Using a subtle concentration of DHA and organic argan oil, Terracotta Sunless Self-Tanning Gel simply needs to be smoothed over the body - the only evidence of a sun-kissed illusion is the bottle! Best of all, the Terracotta Sunless Self-Tanning Gel is visible after only one hour, but lasts up to four days.

Terracotta Jambes de Gazelle ($59) is also coming back! This mist is lightly scented with the fragrance of the tropical tiare flower. This tinted spray mist refreshes the legs and leaves them feeling cooled and relaxed. Drying instantly, Jambes de Gazelle provides beautiful legs without any risk of clothing stain or product transfer, yet washes off with soap and water. Want! Now!

The resounding success of Terracotta Sun Serum ($59) has inspired a new bottle. The design was inspired by Guerlain’s classic Coconut Oil Soap. The bottle will also be fitted with a metalized brown dropper to ensure the amounts dispersed are exactly as needed.

This remarkable serum is your loyal ally in acquiring, deepening, and prolonging a tan. Adding a few drops of this honey-colored serum to your normal skin-care product will instantly transform it into a tan booster, 15 times higher than that of other tan boosters. In the palm of your hand, blend two drops with your normal skin-care product (or four drops in your body-care product) and apply. That's all there is to it. Day by day, you will gradually acquire a lovely, long-lasting healthy glow.

This amazing line-up will be available beginning in March at select locations of Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sephora, Bloomingdale's, and Bergdorf Goodman. I'll be waiting at the counter.

  1. Oh my goodness! Is it Terracotta time already? I wonder if Guerlain will have some unique beauties like it did last year. The Sun in the City and Terracotta collections last year were so pretty; especially the two liquid blushers.

    1. Hi Charlestongirl,

When I saw your promo pictures, with all the emphasis on, well, terracotta :-) , I just figured there had to be some color products in there somewhere. I guess Guerlain is saving the color for the new glosses and for their summer collection. I'm in no hurry. It's still winter! It is interesting, though, to see so many variations of 4 Seasons. I bought the light 4 Seasons two years ago and liked the versatility. Obviously, it is a good concept because it was so widely imitated by other luxury brands and drugstore brands. So, I'm curious to see what the new variations are like. I'm also interested in seeing the Nude shade of Terracotta Skin. It's great that a Guerlain is recognizing that not every woman wants to look tanned. Many women are content with their fair complexions but just want a bit of summer's warm glow.

That is what I keep asking myself!

I think every Terracotta fan will agree, you need to start with your perfect shade of bronzing powder :-)

  8. I am SO excited for this release! Last year, I got my first Guerlain bronzer--the Terracotta Light bronzer in Brunettes--and I *loved* it. There's really nothing else like it--it's so subtle and easy to use and creates such an effortless glow! I've been wanting to get another one that is perhaps a bit darker and possibly matte (though I am open to shimmer since Guerlain does it so tastefully!). The original 4-Seasons one did catch my eye but now, I am definitely waiting for the new releases! :D

  10. Eileen,

You left me chuckling. I said spring, but I already have spring. So, come spring, we will get summer. Right you are!

  11. So true, Becca, there is nothing else quite like it.

  12. I find this very interesting, if a bit overwhelming with the choices! I have never been one to use tanners and have only tried a bronzer over the last year and have 3. I am very pale and while I might like a bit of colour dont want to be bronzed looking and have always been scared of tanners given I have seen some pretty nasty results. How would I try this out, I am open to any suggestions from those wih experience. As I said I am pale and dont tan much naturally, never have

    1. Hi Angusmum,

Wayne at Gossmakeupartist just posted a YouTube video (approx. 7 min.) called Ebony and White in which he talks about foundations for both very pale and very deep skin tones. Although bronzer isn't the main topic, he does talk about what you pale-skins should look for in a bronzer/blush and where to apply it. He is of the embrace what you've got school of thought, but he recognizes that sometimes a woman wants a bit of seasonal warmth. If you've never watched any of Wayne's videos, check him out. He's warm, funny, and his ultimate goal is to teach good technique.

  13. It's disappointing that Guerlain believes that "every" woman can wear one of these. I have a few of their products and absolutely love them. But unless they've really come up with something different, I have to say that they don't work on everyone. I am as fair as Nicole Kidman with natural red hair. And my hair color is fairly intense for a ginger. And I have freckles. They are fairly light but dusted over my entire face. And I'm here to tell you, bronzing powders do not work on me, no matter how light of a hand I use in application. I just look dirty. And yes, I have swatched every Guerlain powder made and numerous other brands too. I've accepted the fact that I will probably never be able to use a bronzing product but I just wish so hard that they would quit trying to market these products with claims that there is a "fit" for everyone. And I wish even harder that I could actually find one I could use. I've embraced my paleness but sometimes I would love to look a little warmer than Casper the ghost.

    1. Hi Deb,

Your frustration with the claim of having a bronzer to suit everyone is understandable, but remember, the companies are referring to those women who can wear their foundation shades. If your skin tone doesn't fall within the parameters set by their lightest and darkest shades, chances are very good that their bronzers won't work for you, either. That doesn't mean, though, that you can't add a soft touch of seasonal warmth to your complexion. It's a question of finding the right shade (preferably sheer) and knowing how and where to apply it so that it looks like a soft and natural flush compliments of the sun :-)

Please see my reply to Angusmum about Wayne Goss' newest video, Ebony and White. If you don't already know about Wayne, he's known as the Gossmakeupartist on YouTube. His advice is spot on.

  14. Hi angusmum1,

I am very pale too. I do not wear bronzers to look tan. I wear them for contouring. There must be a shade, whether Guerlain or not, that works for you.

Go for the shades that have some pink in them. Then start out small, applying them under your blush. Under the cheekbones and blended well. See what you think.

  15. Deb, see above. You also need to buy a bronzer-blusher hybrid that is cool toned. No mud! If I were you, I would ask a makeup artist I trust to show me how to use one. I really believe that if I can wear bronzers, you can too. Maybe you haven't found the brand/shade that's right for you?

  16. The bronzers look so delectable in the promo posters. I've heard many people talking about this, I suppose it's time for me to join the crowd. I can never sun tan nicely, I always end up orangey :(

  17. OMG! I love Guerlain Terracotta - i have the Brunettes one, and the Healthy skin, but I'm SO excited to see these bronzers in person! :)

  18. Have I mentioned how much I love Guerlain? This is the only company that makes bronzers that give my skin the look of my natural tan...which I haven't seen in ages since I stay out of the sun. :) Can't wait to see these.

  19. I already own 4 Seasons in Blondes and Brunettes, but Nude one looks so tempting... :) I promised myself never to buy a bronzing powder again until I finish these, but it just seems so unique :)

  24. Hi Nina,

I am checking for you. I could guess, and I think I could nail it, but I'll get an official answer.

  25. Hi Eileen,
I appreciate where you are coming from but I have to say I don't agree completely. I use Guerlain Meteorites Compact in Teint Beige and it is perfect on me. I'm madly in love with it, even though it is not a foundation. So yes, they do have some products that work across a range of skin tones. I also understand what bronzers are for and what the goal is; hence I understand what I need to look for. I'm 56 years old so I'm not exactly a novice at makeup experimentation. I do know how to apply bronzer and I have had 3 different makeup artists attempt to use a bronzer on me and all of them agreed it is probably not my best product. I was only trying to express my opinion that just because a company says a product has enough range to have a fit for everyone it is just not true. I didn't notice in Guerlain's marketing language that these bronzers will probably only work for you IF you can wear a shade in their foundation range. I'm mainly just fed up with the marketing claims of the beauty industry. And yes, I understand they are in the business of selling products and making money. They just need to be a little more direct and honest in the claims.
But I thank you for the feedback and the video tip. I will check it out.

    1. Hi Deb,

If I offended you, I apologize. That was not my intent. Your competence with makeup was not being called into question. I was offering a guideline only; not an absolute and, of course, we were talking specifically about bronzers and not finishing powders, blushers, lipsticks, etc.

  26. Hi! I'm a Canadian reader, but visiting the DC area (actually Silver Spring, MD). Do you have any shopping recommendations? What is the best destination for Nordstrom/Saks/Neiman...?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi Eileen,
My apologies back....I did not think you were trying to offend me. I guess my frustration with the industry just got away from me yesterday. I see these products, and they are so beautiful that I guess I just want so badly to believe they will work. But I know that regardless of the hype, there is just no such thing as any product line working across the entire range of the human spectrum of skin tones. I didn't do a great job of expressing that there was where I was coming from. I didn't mean to be short with you, it was lovely of you to take the time to reply to my rant and provide some tips and information. Thank you again for that.

  28. I love love Guerlain bronzers. Already have three of them. They are the best ones out there without a doubt. When I saw picture of the new ones my heart skipped a beat!

  29. Nina,

Here is what I got in answer to your question.

"The shot represents all 6 shades. I believe the first column(on the left, when looking at it on a computer screen) is as follows, top to bottom: Medium Blondes, Medium Brunettes, Ebony, and then the right column is Natural Brunettes, Nude, Natural Blondes."

  30. Vanessa,

Sorry for the delayed response. If you are staying in SS, you should head to Chevy Chase for Saks, Neiman Marcus, Bloomies, and more. You'll need to go to Montgomery Mall for Nordstrom.

  31. Hi LilJeJa,

I think that "power shot" delivers quite a punch.

  32. Hello CC :) I'm a huge fan from Portugal and i think that this is my first coment.

I'm a terracotta girl, every year i buy almost the entire range, my 25 years tell me to love the sun and the tan, and i do it easly!

But let me tell you, what i really collect are the LE powders! From what i've saw, this colletion is a deception because i already have every thing, except the exfoliator :) and the 4 seasons 02 brunettes is my favourite bronzer ever, the second one is the mineral terracotta in colour 03, wich will be discontinued this year :(

You have to see the two LE bronzer this year, GOURGEOUS!!! Terra Neroli and Terra Ora (more gold). A friend of mine as sent me an email, he works for Austria's Guerlain and i saw the images!

Just to let you know, do you use the primer meteorites? To me, it was too pale and pink, but there will be a gold version of them, with 3 tones of gold in it :D Isn't it AMAZING? i know i won't get tan with that, but the glow it will be amazing, i'm sure.

Just one me consideration, i loved more the glass serum :/ i though it looked more like a "serum" LOL in this tiny brown metal it seams like a autobronzer.

I'm sorry for my testament, but terracotta is the only thing i can really talk about :) every year, i feel another person in March when i smell the summer thanks to terracotta produts

    ReplyDelete
  33. CC, i've been searching for the new serum package, and it is not the one on your photo :) the new one is glass, like the old one, only slimmer...

Not really sure what is that bronw metalic with a count drops, it says "Sunless, autogel", it must be a auto bronzer :)well, that's a new thing for me

  35. Hi Charleston Girl,
Is this a limited edition shade? And can you comment on how this compares to last years Burberry Sheer Summer Glow? Btw, just discovered your blog recently and am loving it!!!! Thanks for all the great reviews!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi Anonymous,

It is not limited, but it will sell out quickly. Then you might have to wait a long time to get more.

I'm sorry, but I can't make Burberry comparisons. We don't have a counter in the DC area, so I don't buy the brand. I was disappointed with the lipsticks when I first bought by phone - they are very fragranced - so I just don't want to take any more chances.
