Adele at the Grammy Awards

This darling gal knocked it out of the park at last night's Grammy Awards Show - in more ways than one! Besides sweeping major awards, Adele rocked her new look. Her shoulder-length hair was styled into glamorous, classic curls, which were set off by a thick frame of eyelashes, beautiful eye makeup, and bright red lipstick.

Adele wore a custom-made black Giorgio Armani gown. The dress featured three-quarter-length sleeves and was covered in black-sequined ring designs, sheathed by a delicate black mesh overlay. The look was accented by a cinched waist with a black grosgrain panel on the front. She (or a stylist) completed her look with an exquisite Harry Winston 12.4-carat diamond micro-pavé ring set in platinum. The privileges of stardom!

Clearly a crowd favorite (Sir Paul McCartney was rocking out during her performance of Rolling in the Deep), she was also a viewer favorite. Perhaps a result of the people I follow on Twitter and their interest in beauty, the "Adele tweets" about her stunning appearance flew fast and furiously during the show. Her red lipstick and eye makeup set the Twitterverse on fire. (After she appeared in red, she had nude lips - it was a total look change, but both were delightful.)

Take that, Karl Lagerfeld! He described her as a pretty girl, but one who is too fat. Can you believe it? Clearly he has been blinded by the skeletal models who grace Chanel's runways. Supposedly he apologized, but his remarks were actually about how mean the press can be. He never really said, "I'm sorry."

I wrote this short feature not only to celebrate Adele's gigantic talent and many Grammy Awards she won, but also to draw attention to her beauty. I think she looked gorgeous.

  5. Love Adele. So glad you wote such a nice piece on her big night. Mr. Lagerfeld clearly shouldn't be pointing fingers. His "look" seriously needs updating. I'm sorry but he looks rather creepy.

    Can we say....Ichabod Crane ?

  7. Her makeup was flawless and gown was beautiful. Shame on you Karl for call her fat. You were 60 lbs overweight at one time in your life.
Does anyone know what red lipstick she wore last night?

  8. Tee hee, grinxdor, kkc135, and Northerngirl,

All KL did with his words, besides enraging Adele's many fans, was attract a lens at his own appearance. :)

  9. Can't wait to find out what lipstick she was wearing last night (I'm sure they'll tell us eventually) and to see it fly from shelves everywhere.

And Lagerfeld is an ass. Last I checked, he looked like a piece of handbag leather being stretched.

  10. I think Karl needs to look in the mirror before criticizing anyone's looks. I'll leave him at that. She looked great, sang beautifully and wasn't naked. :)

  11. She's beautiful! Even with no makeup... don't care what size she is, she's gorgeous! Can't believe Lagerfeld's comments about size. Models nowadays are scary skinny! Cindy Crawford would be considered fat next to todays models on the runway and magazines...

  12. She is beautiful and comes across as a genuine, lovely person. Have you seen the 60 Minutes interview that Anderson Cooper did with her? I just looked it up on YouTube. She's fabulous!

  13. Hi Evelyn!

Ditto! Did you notice she "killed" her song with just a nicrophone while it took Katy Perry special effects, a bizarre costume, and back-up dancers to perform hers?

  14. Kate, I looked for the identity of her lipstick last night, but didn't find it. As for KL? Only the best leather... :)

  15. So true, Anonymous. I feel thin until I look at the malnourished girls in the shows.

  16. I hate how Karl Lagerferd has made a habbit of bashing people with regards to their weight. He seems to forget he was obese and it did not look good on him!

Adele is gorgeous and such a character! I don't think there's anyone else that looks so natural in front of the cameras and is not stricking a perfect pose all the time! She is human and she s gorgeous! Got to love her!

  17. Fat is never tolerable under any circumstances. Fat is not healthy. Fat is cancer, diabetes, heart disease and joint issues. Only about 13% of American women are fit; 67% of American people are either overweight or obese. Fat is not tolerable.

  18. She is absolutely gorgeous - and what a talent!

This isn't the first time KL has left a bad taste in my mouth with his insulting comments - another time was when he made some ridiculous comments after his Paris-Bombay show about women bringing out their jewels during difficult economic times, and about the "poor" in India.

But...I'm not saying I'll boycott Chanel makeup because of KL - anymore than I would because of Coco's Nazi connections. Makeup is makeup, after all!

  20. Bisbee,

It's unfortunate that he has chosen to express himself the the way he has. I guess eccentricity comes with the turf.

  21. Hi Cherry Lane!

She DID keep it real. She was so true to herself, and so humble. Gosh I like that gal!

  22. Hi Nemo,

Excess weight can cause health issues. That said, Adele is not fat. In fact, she has lost weight recently. We should support her. She is curvy, only a problem in Mr. Lagerfeld's eyes, apparently.

This morning, the curvy model who graces the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue was on Today. She's not fat either. :)

  23. It's really interesting to see how our perceptions have changed over time. Adele is perfectly normal in size, a model is not the norm. Recently I saw a photo of Cindy Crawford in her heyday in a swimsuit next to a photo of one of our current models also in a swimsuit. Cindy looked strong and healthy, an Amazon so to speak. The model of 2012? No comparison.

I prefer to see healthy and happy at any size.

  24. In coming to Adele's defense, we all need to remember that excess fat is a killer and, at the very least, it makes for a lot of health related problems that can be easily avoided. As lovely as Adele appeared at the Grammys, the fact is, she is overweight and that is not healthy.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions, especially in the US, affecting people of all ages and costing the US health care system and economy over $270 billion (yes, billion!) a year. Fat is fat, and being overweight is a serious health issue that needs to be addressed with honesty, firmness, support, and compassion.

Lagerfeld's cruel and snide public comment about Adele's weight said more about his own insecurity than it did about her. It was a pathetic attempt to inflate his own importance by belittling someone who is much more famous and popular than he will ever be. He is certainly entitled to think and say whatever he wants to in private, but his public attack showed exceedingly poor judgement.

As for Adele, she looked lovely and radiant with joy. Her voice is a treasure; her way with words is a gift. Nothing Lagerfeld could say would ever detract from the enormity of her transcendent talent. Adele's true beauty has nothing to do with her weight.

  25. I do love Adele too, she is so gorgeous, so talented so true and so simple: her voice is beautiful and her character lovely!
KL made a fool of himself, he loves a good word and it's true Adele is overweight (like 98% of women) compared to his bony models. I've read he realized how cruel he had been and was distressed since he adores her voice and her character...I wouldn't be surprised if he sent her a word of apology and a huge bunch of flowers ...He was fat himself after letting himself go after his friend's death and decided he wanted to wear Heidi Slimane suits(=Monsieur Dior at the time) and so he followed a very strict diet and lost all the pounds he wished. He is very demanding on people and even more so on himself! Mind you, I'm not defending him, just giving you a light on a personnality which doesn't seem very attractive when you do not know much about him (I rather like him since he is very clever, knows a lot about fashion and the world in general and loves beauty for its sake...which doesn't prevent him from saying very stupid, insensitive things sometimes!!

  26. I couldn't love her more. She is the most talented virtuoso voice we've had in a long itme. She is not only talented, like you said, but gorgeous...really, really gorgeous. Exactly the way she is. I thought she looked lovely and performed beautifully and I loved her speeches. From the <3!!!

  27. OK, Eileen, I'm rail-thin, but I'm going to skip my after-dinner chocolate because of that. :)

  28. That's really interesting, Clarisse! Thank you. I boil that down to "the pot calling the kettle black." He drew nothing but condemnation.

  29. Hi MamaVal,

I am considering buying her CD/DVD so I can listen to her in my car. That's almost unheard of for me!

  30. Adele's makeup was fabulous! I can't wait to find out who her makeup artist was and the products used. She was also sporting a Louboutin mani: silver on top and red underneath. She seemed so geniune on the Grammys - seems like a lot of fun!

  31. Thank you for your post, CG. I am an enormous fan of Adele's and have been for a while. I'm simply thrilled for her success, and she deserves it. She's a glorious talent and a beautiful vibrant strong young woman. Lagerfeld's comment is of the sort that eventually sank Ms. Whitney Houston over time. Petty, obnoxious, triffling, and shallow. Prevail young Adele and bless us with your God-given gifts. Beth in Pgh xo ;-)
