The Friday Forum - September 13

My garden looks like this now, awash in goldenrod. The goldenrod volunteered years ago, and it has spread everywhere in my sunny back yard. Although it's terribly invasive, I love it when it blooms like this. The masses of yellow are cheerful.

Late yesterday, we finally got some rain. The ground in my garden was so dry it had cracked. The thunderstorms came with damage in the area, unfortunately, but my immediate area was fine. This morning, the goldenrod was all bent over, but it should straighten up and reach for the sun by the time I get home from work.

I'm excited about this beauty/beautiful weekend. Not only is the weather supposed to be perfect, it's Beauty Event at Neiman Marcus. I'll get my day started tomorrow at Neiman Marcus Tysons Galleria getting the run-down on the newest beauty products and then "hit" the counters. Today, I'm leaving work a bit early so that I can go to Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie to pick up my Carnaby Street Kaleidoscope. I hear it's even more beautiful than it looked in the advance press photos. Look for swatch photos here tomorrow.

This has been a huge fragrance week for me. I was gifted three new-to-me bottles of Hanae Mori fragrances; I received a prize (and prized) bottle from a perfumer in Canada - one I won on Facebook; I received several bottles of perfume I'm dying to tell you about (soon); and I also received some decants of treasured fragrances I purchased from friends (e.g., Roja Dove). I'm smelling great! Give me time to write, and I'll tell you all about them.

Last week, you collectively helped me make up my mind on the contest dilemma. I have decided to discontinue weekly self-sponsored contests. Many of you, even Anonymous readers, told me you read Best Things in Beauty every day, but never enter the contests - and usually don't even comment. I got a loud and clear message that the contests aren't a tipping point, so I will stop featuring them on Sundays. I still want to find ways to thank my regular readers, so if you would like to be on my list for occasional gifts, please send you address to bestthingsinbeautycontests@gmail.com (only that address, not the regular blog address) with prizes in the subject line. When I receive extra samples or gratis products to share - even when I buy just for you - I will randomly choose someone who has provided an address and send a little freebie along - just to say thanks.

Naturally, when generous companies or product representatives offer me giveaways for my readers, I will take advantage of their generousity and run those contests. I think I have one offer in my e-mail now that I can use to arrange a sponsored contest.

Thank you for being so sweet, kind, and honest in your comments last Friday. I can't put into words how grateful I was for your many comments.

It's time for the Friday Forum. I love this part of our week. What new products did you discover this week? Did you find any deals you couldn't resist? Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Do you have a question others might be able to answer? Want to talk about skin care? What's new in your life? Just use the comments. Don't be shy. Just make sure to ask any question you might have over the weekend. By early the next week, most (not all) readers will have moved on.

Stay tuned this weekend. I'm sure I'll have lots of news.

Update 3:00 pm: Carnaby Street did not arrive at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie. I got there to find only the tester. Sorry for the false alarm.

  1. Your weekend sounds very exciting, Charleston Girl...I hope that you have wonderful time!

My question--what are some of the readers' favorite eye primers?
Mine is running low and I am ready to try something new.

I hope that everyone has a lovely weekend.

  2. Hey, CG and everyone,

It’s been a frustrating week for me. I’m on day ten of the sinus infection from you-know-where. I can’t even play with my new makeup—Chanel’s Mystere which I ended up buying after reading Eileen’s (Hi, Eileen!) comments in a post here a few weeks ago and Chanel’s cream blush in Revelation.

    I have two questions:

Has anyone heard who is replacing Peter Phillips?

Does anyone have a guess as to how quickly the Chantecaille Wild Horses palette might sell out? I’m not familiar with just how limited their special palettes are. I can’t stop thinking about this one, but two doctor’s visits plus medication have eliminated my beauty budget for the present.

I was horrified to see photos of the always elegant Nicole Kidman knocked down on the sidewalk in NYC by a paparazzi on a bicycle! She had just attended the Calvin Klein show and was returning to her hotel when this moron, riding his bike on the sidewalk (illegally) ran her down. He did get a ticket from the police, but still, this makes me angry.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone. CG, I’m looking forward to your updates this weekend to lift my spirits.

  3. Hi CG! I hope you have a great time at Neiman's today! I am so jealous that you have all the counters near you. I can't wait for the carnaby street swatches- if it looks like something I "need" I'll probably call Michael this weekend to order. The teal shade looks especially interesting. This week I pulled out the LMDB Melange palette (that I obtained when you mentioned Michael had gotten a second shipment) and I am trying to use the colorful shadows more and not only use the neutrals. My husband thinks it is funny that I'll sit around the house wearing more eye makeup than usual because I have to stick to pretty basic makeup for work! Have a great weekend! -Sara

  4. Rosemary,

There has been talk for a long time that Alber Elbaz was a potential replacement. As you know, nothing has been announced yet.

Wild Horses is likely to say around for awhile. Most of the limiteds, back to Tiger in the Wild, are still available.

Kidman really took a hard hit. People are so careless. I heard she was hurt.

  5. Sunnlitt,

Edward Bess makes my favorite. It is called Illuminating Eyeshadow Base. It can be found at Sephora.

  7. I have had a fun beauty week. I tried cle' de peau beaute' refining fluid foundation in shade B20. The formulation was lovely, but the shade was a little dark. I am very, very pale right now. It also tended to sink into my pores after a few hours. I also tried two of Charlotte Tilbury's Colour Chameleon eyeshadow pencils in Amethyst Aphrodisiac and Bronzed Garnet. I literally had to chase down the DHS truck because twice they attempted delivery at the wrong house. It was hilarious because I was running down the street! At first, I was a little disappointed in them, but after playing around with them, I am quite pleased, and they are very flattering. They are touted as waterproof, but they don't "dry" immediately upon application, so there is plenty of time to blend and layer. I have not found them to crease either, although I did apply them over Sensai Eyelid Base.

Your weekend sounds great. I am far away from Neiman Marcus, and I am still mulling over my choices in my shopping cart.

  9. It sounds like you have a wonderful and exciting day ahead of you, Charlestongirl. You're going to have so much to share with us and I'm good and ready for a bit of fun even of the vicarious kind. I haven't had time to go to Neiman's because I've been busy catching up with things around the house and getting ready for a peaceful celebration of the autumnal equinox. That hasn't kept me from doing a bit of retail therapy online, though. :-)

I didn't order much from Neiman's because I pretty much have everything I need or want. One of the things I did decide to try, though, was Tom Ford's new eye primer. So far, I've only read one comprehensive review, so we shall see.

I also have Chantecaille's Wild Horses heading my way. It's time to replace my Guerlain palette in Les Cuirs and I think Wild Horses is a beautiful and modern take on a look that is polished and natural. I had the opportunity to swatch it earlier, but waited for Neiman's Beauty Event to actually purchase it.

Autumn and Holiday collections are traditionally my favorites and so far I've been extraordinarily pleased with this year's eyeshadow offerings. I have Mystère and Fascination for a bit of smoky color, She Wolf and In The Pink for neutrals with pizzaz, and soon Wild Horses for natural and effortless chic. Who could ask for more? Although that's probably a silly question to ask a bunch of people who read beauty blogs! LOL

    Hi Sunnlitt,

I think an important consideration when picking an eye primer is the condition of your lids--smooth or crinkled, oily or dry, visible or hooded, etc. Perhaps you could tell us a bit more about what you're looking for. Also, what are you currently using and what do you like or dislike about it? Perhaps then we can all come up with some solid recommendations.

    Hi Rosemary,

I think we'd all love to know who will be Peter Phillips' replacement. Although Chanel hasn't said anything, that's not the kind of information you can keep secret for long in a business that loves gossip. I'm really surprised that it hasn't leaked yet. I hope you're feeling better soon and that you'll get a chance to play with Mystère. It's funny how a palette that I initially thought I'd give a miss has turned out to be one of my favorite autumn looks. I think I'll enjoy it even more as the weather cools down.

    Hi Moonchime,

If you have a moment to read BTiB today, know that all my most positive thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

  10. Sunnlitt - unlike CG, I tried the Edward Bess shadow base, and absolutely hated it! I found it thick and gummy! My absolute favorite, which I have purchased more than once, is Nars Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base - it's not beige, it's actually white but you can't see it on - works the best for me!

  11. Sara, only the tester was there. However, he does have a huge list, so I'd get on it if I were you.

  12. I went to Nordstrom's and got a sample of Chantecaille gold energizing cream. I expected to love it. The problem is I LOVE LOVE LOVE it and am considering purchasing it. My skin looks bright and young! Is it crazy to spend that much money on moisturizer?

  13. I've been quite busy and at times overwhelmed. My husband lost both his parents to old age in Aug & Sept. Our little 15 yr old chihuahua had a stroke and I've been nursing her back to health. It was touch and go there for awhile. She still walks sideways like a crab and falls down sometimes but she's a lot better at avoiding falling in her food or her water bowl and sending water all across the floor! I'm too old for this much pampering but we are so glad she made it and is still with us. Bought my first Edward Bess blush and its lovely. It is the light pink one from Spring, I believe. I also bought a Kaplan lipstick. Love the color, could do without the peppermint flavor and slight tingling but it is moisturizing and long lasting. I think I'll try to find the same shade in Guerlain. That's it more me now.

  14. Hey Charlestongirl! I can't wait til you get your Carnaby Street - I'm so eager to ooh and aah over your always lovely swatches even though my budget is shot for the time being.

Hi sunnlitt! Eileen is probably right in that it depends on your own eyelids, but I absolutely adore Paula Dorf's primer. All of my shadows go on smoothly and stay put when I wear it - even my Chantecaillse shades which otherwise do a disappearing act on me. Hope this helps!

  15. So pleased that you have decided what to do about competitions/giveaways. It seems that most people, like me, enjoy your blog and may like to win the occasional prize but that is not a priority.

Regarding, eyeshadow base, I love NARS and have always found it easy to use and works well.

I am looking forward to seeing holiday sets and have already seen a few online. It is an exciting time for beauty lovers.

  16. In regards to eye primer I agree it depends on your lids and what you want from a primer. I have 2 I like Cover FX because it is a dual moisturizer/primer so I find it minimizes fine lines and its hard to moisturize prior to applying makeup. The other is a cult fav, too faced shadow insurance as it is great for long days and helps colours stay true and not crease for many hours. My 2 cents!

  17. CG-I always read your posts, rarely comment but never enter the contests. Anyway, I can't wait for your Carnaby St swatches. Have you seen the Rebecca Minkoff cosmetic bag gift at NM? I'm wondering if its nice. As for Chantecaille gold energizing cream, it's the best thing I've ever put on my face!

  19. Where online can I get Sisley's Orchidee Rose? I've looked and can only find the original palette. Sadly, I am disappointed that the Nars radiance primer makes me break out and have irritated spots; I love the new creme foundation and thought this might be the primer for me, but it reacts like all the others.

It sounds like you should have had a fun day today! I can't wait to see your new goodies;) I am so ready for the weather to cool off down here, its still so hot & humid..just miserable! Supposedly it will be better next week..fingers crossed:)

  21. Dear CG,
I am also an avid daily reader of your blog and love your great reviews, opinions and the general tone of your blog: kind, respectful, open-minded, animal and nature loving. Thank you for all your reviews. Tomorrow sounds like great fun for you! I look forward to your musings.
I bought two Chanel lip things today. - one is a beautiful red.
Eileen and Rosemary, I am also a HUGE fan of Mystere, one of the best quads ever IMO. Eileen, would you recommend fascination?
I hope everybody is well. This has been a stressful week for me. Have a great, restful weekend.

  22. First, I want to thank you CG for showing us a picture of your beautiful goldenrod. Isn't it exhilarating to see such beauty in your very own garden? I just love it when our prickly pear cactus blooms. the site of it lifts my spirits. If I could grow a nice garden, I'd love to have fresh flowers in our home all of the time.

Eileen--Thank you for your prayers for me. And thank you to everyone who kept me in your thoughts and prayers today, as I had to have a breast biopsy.

I'm doing okay tonight. The biopsy itself proved to be quite traumatic. I had hoped it would be just a fine needle aspiration. That would have been easy, because the Doctor removes the fluid from a breast lump with the fine needle. Unfortunately, my mass was solid. That required a scalpel incision, then what looked like a crochet hook, to extract tissue from the mass. The Doctor had to take two samples. Then, she had to put a clip inside my breast to mark the spot--just in case further testing is needed. After all of this, I had to have a mammogram to make certain that the clip was in the correct place.

Thankfully, the mammogram wasn't a normal one--there wasn't as much pulling and positioning. She was gentle with me. It was painless. I had been given an injection of Lidocaine. the doctor said she was doubling up on it so I would have the least amount of pain possible.

I have to admit, when I saw the huge crochet type "needle" that was going to be used to extract the tissue, I felt like saying "NO!" But, I'm so thankful tonight that I finally got it done. I should know the results in about one week.

I left the Center with a packet of supplies that I need to take care of my breast as it heals. The ice packs they gave me were wonderful. But, I was only given two of them.

I found a creative solution that is beauty related to help with my swelling.

I have a set of "Eye Candy" chilled little round puffs that you put on your eyes on the mornings you wake up with puffy and baggy eyes.

Well, I have discovered that one is the perfect size for me to put into my little bralette that holds it against the part of my breast that is swelling. The beauty of it is--as I am using one, the other is in the fridge chilling. I'm tickled to bits that I have these!

    It's funny how beauty products can be used in different ways. {*_*}

I am really wanting to purchase the Chantecaille's Wild Horses. The palette is so beautiful, I would probably never want to use it. But, I have had the wonderful privilege of seeing two wild horses running through the wide open desert. When you see such a sight as that , you never, ever forget it. It was awe inspiring! This Chantecaille's palette reminds me of that day when I witnessed the horses running wild and free.

For all of you who are going through difficult times, my thoughts and prayers are with you. As CG wrote recently, we are all a part of a club. That feels so good to know that we are all in this together.

May you all have a beautiful weekend. Oh, and CG, you are so lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful fragrances. I too am a fragrance junkie. {*_*} Today I wore Comptoir Sud Pacifique's Vanille Abricot. I tend to wear that when I want to feel uplifted, warm, and just totally peaceful. It makes me think of warm sugar cookies fresh from the oven. You can't beat that!

  23. Hi, it will sound silly, but I find Milani's eye base extremely good-I have long, long days at work, leaving home at 6.30am and coming back around 8pm and using this base my eye make up looks still nice and fresh when I am back home. It's easy to use and has no color per se, which make is it even neter. For about$7 it may be worth trying.

  26. Hi Anonymous @12:10,

If you like the color tinged smokiness of Mystère, then chances are good you'll like the way Fascination works. I don't apply it the way it was used in the Chanel tutorial because I thought it looked muddied, messy, and heavy-handed. Instead, I prefer a more sculpted look and so I use the lightest shade as an eyelid base and blend it up lightly onto the browbone. Next, I use a bit of the mid-toned turquoise in the outer "<" , crease, and under the lower lashes. I use the teal as a liner along the upper lashes and blend it up into the outer "<" so that it flows into the turquoise. I also blend it around my lower lashes; going for the same ombré effect--darkest in the outer corner and fading into the turquoise is it moves towards the lashes under my iris. I save the gorgeous grey to add extra dimension/drama to the crease and around the lashes. For my deep set eyes, the chic grey is a sculpting tool rather than a lid color as it was in the Chanel tutorial. I'd look like a cadaver if I did that :-P

I like a very blended shadow look with no harsh demarcation lines and this quad performs brilliantly. Every color has a blue undertone--including the grey--so they flow together easily. Like all shadows that are meant to layer, there is a bit of translucence to them so they are nothing like summer's vibrant blues. On my eyes, the effect is misty and a bit sultry; neither too cool nor too warm. As for the amount of smokiness I get, that just depends on how much I work the grey and teal.

I have a very large eye area on which to play so I love to create gradations of color and a good blending brush is my BFF :-) If you've seen the picture of Gaia (The Non Blond), I have the same large moveable lid area, but my browbone area is twice the size of hers. My eyes are a dark warm green and I have black lashes and brows.

I know my response goes way beyond what you asked, but I think it sometimes helps to know how a person is using a particular product. Anyway, go take a look at it and see what you think :-) And have a wonderful, stressfree weekend.

  28. Moonchime, you are in my prayers. I'm sure it will be a long week for you, hang in there.

CG, thank you for caring so much about your readers that you continue to give us the latest scoop in beauty news and products, add to that, feel the need to reward us with impromptu giveaways. I've said many times how I can't get through a day without reading you and that remains true. Even if life gets in the way and I miss a day I scroll back to catch up. I'm going to add my name to that list of yours because you are so FUN! Thank you for providing the opportunity.

As for new products I've tried, I finally received my Beautyhabit order of Rouge Bunny Rouge...HEAVEN is all I can say. What gorgeous silky, creamy, amazing powder eyeshadows. And the cream eyeshadows are just as wonderful and really, really last all day. Oh, at the last minute I threw a blush in my cart and so so glad I did. Beautiful!

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend. I'm in the Midwest and the weather is fall-like and perfect!

Cheers to all, Denise at aeiokid at comcast dot net

I panicked when I read your comment because I recycled the Tom Ford Box yesterday, and I wondered if I had thrown my TF eye primer out. Fortunately, I hadn't.

  32. Bisbee,

If you tried to use the EB primer with the brush applicator, you were not applying it correctly. That WOULD produce a gloppy mess.

Twist once and put the product in your palm. Then, pick it up with a concealer or touch-up brush (like BB's), and apply. You will end up with a very thin coating, not at all thick.

  33. Hi Niki,

Nearly everyone likes the NARS. I seldom think about it because I've "mostly" given up on NARS. With the exception of the Multiples. The quality has become so spotty, I won't order blind anymore.

  36. Hi Moonchime,

We are definitely adding you to our prayers. I had a biopsy when I was 31. I had a large, solid tumor that turned out to be benign. They actually put me under general anesthesia for the removal - not just a biopsy. It was a fibroadenoma. Scared the hell out of me. I hope your outcome is just as benign.

  39. Hi Charlestongirl,

Been there, seen that, done that! LOL Although not exactly "dumpster diving", I have occasionally pawed my way through my trash because I feared I had tossed out a new purchase. It's a terrible feeling when the next day you reach for your new product and---it's not there! It usually turns out that it fell out of the bag while in my car, I transferred it into my purse, or I put it in the wrong makeup drawer when I got home. One time I tossed a new La Priarie lipstick into my drawer for eye makeup and was going crazy trying to find it. Sheesh! The joys of getting older :-P I'd rather laugh at my silliness, though, than know I had tossed a $55 lipstick into the trash.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the TF primer will be a nice one. I've used Kanebo Sensai for years now and have always been pleased with it's performance on my dry lids, but sometimes a gal just has to mix it up a bit :-) I like to try new ones from time to time, but I always come back to Sensai for my everyday eyelid base. Anyway, we shall see what dear Mr. Ford has developed. My FedEx should arrive on Tuesday.

I hope you're enjoying a wonderful and beauty packed weekend, Charlestongirl. You deserve it :-)

  40. Hi Eileen,

    YUP!

Today was fun. I attended the Tysons event, but the people were more fun than the actually beauty "news." Enjoyed seeing some old faces - and new. I picked up my beauty event purchases from Marilyn.

Then I spent three hours at Mazza. One of my fave guys applied Carnaby Street to me (right after one of my most fave every TF reps told me how beautiful the makeup I had applied looked. LOL The colors in Carnaby Street are very nice. LMdB is coming out with a raft of new SKUs in a few weeks. I'm looking forward to fun.

  42. Like others who have posted, I read your blog every day, don't comment, and maybe have entered a contest or two. I love that you purchase the products you review unlike other bloggers who, protestations and disclaimers to the contrary, I always wonder how unbiased their reviews really are. You are the one responsible for my introduction and addiction to LMdB! And I'm checking out La Prairie and Sisley skincare as a result of your blog too. Hmmm, now that I write this, your blog is making me poorer;-). So your recent post about being more prudent in your purchases, not buying something just for the GWP or because it's "limited", etc really hit home as I definitely need to take a purchase sabbatical since I have a closet full of unopened product. Therefore I skipped the lovely Space NK gift but boy am I having difficulty not diving into the Neiman gift!

  43. @sunnlitt I've only tried Urban Decay Primer Potion (original) and NARS Smudgeproof e/s primer.
I like NARS and it's transparent, dries down quickly on the lids!

I've spotted a new (?) e/s primer by Becca and am curious about that.

@Rosemary the Wild Horses palette might stay around for a while - but i swatched it in person and it's extremely wearable and texture is silky. Maybe get it when there's a good beauty event?

  44. Hello everyone,
A bit late joining here as usual.

CG, I hope the Carnaby will come soon enough for you.

Unfortunately, I don't share the enjoyment of Mystere with everyone here :-( Perhaps I'm lacking some imagination of placement/different looks that this palette potentially can do. I mostly just use the taupe shade (which is AMAZING) but that's about it.

Can I ask anyone here of TF question: I've been hunting down this TF Lip/cheek stain circa Fall collection last year. I think it is called "Tainted Love." Does anyone know where I can get this? I know it is limited edition, and I refuse to pay loads on ebay, so I thought I put it out here in case anyone knows.

Other than this, I've been following some Charlotte Tilbury product reviews on the blogosphere. Sounds interesting although I think it has TF feel all over it.

    Happy weekend everyone!

  45. Hi Moonchime. I prayed for you yesterday and hope that all the prayers and positive energy you receive speed your way to a swift recovery. Like CG (only I was even younger) I had a solid mass removed from my breast under general anesthesia and it was benign. I really hope you bought the Wild Horses palette as a treat to yourself after the biopsy.

Hi Jenni, I'm glad you had a chance to swatch Wild Horses and found it to be silky. I want it, but, having no health insurance and getting sick is $$$$$.

Hi Claire, I'm so sorry you're not getting the maximum use out of Mystere! I suppose you've played around with it? I picture the shades other than the taupe being so sad that they're not being used. LOL. As I said, I've had a sinus infection since mine arrived and have not had a chance to play with the colors. Have you watched the Lisa Eldridge video on Chanel.com where she applies products from the Fall collection? Maybe that will give you more ideas. Also, when my Chanel SA sent me mine, she sent along a little booklet from Chanel on how to apply the Fall collection. Did you get it? In case you didn't, I'm going to copy what Chanel says here: "LES 4 OMBRES in Mystere: Apply the golden-green eyeshadow shade to the outer corner and blend inward. Brush the golden-white tint over the entire lid, up to the browbone. Add the deep green shade to the crease and the lower lashline. Apply the silver tone to the inner corner of the eye."
Maybe give that combination a try. Also, if Eileen is reading, she always has good ideas on how to combine colors. Hopefully she'll chime in with the combination she posted a while back that convinced me to buy Mystere.

Whew, sorry for the long comment.:)

  46. Hi Rosemary,
Thanks for suggesting Lisa Eldridge's video!! I forgot that this video even exists, she usually gives much inspiration. And thanks for the application tip from Chanel. I'll see if I can play around with Mystere again tomorrow.
