Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder

Not too long ago, Hourglass introduced a collection of four Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powders ($38), illuminating strobing powders designed to sculpt the face with light, creating depth and dimension for a refined, natural-looking highlight.

These powders are formulated in a sheer base that’s infused with concentrated, ultra-fine mico-pearl particles in a number of sizes and refraction levels for natural-looking luminescence - without leaving a heavy metallic finish. Developed with "Photoluminescent Technology," it captures, diffuses, and softens surrounding light to refine the appearance of the skin. Use it wet or dry for different levels of intensity, taking you from an everyday strobe highlight to a dramatic evening strobe highlight.

These universally flattering shades are perfect for all skin tones, and they’re designed to be used with the Ambient Strobe Light Sculptor (sold separately) for the most effortless application.

How are these powders different from the original Ambient Lighting Powders? Designed to emulate the way in which strobe lights capture and reflect light on the face, Ambient Strobe Lighting Powders contain a more concentrated level of micro-pearl particles in varying sizes and refraction levels. Combined with a sheerer base, the powders impart a highlight to the face in its purest form without masking the skin beneath it. They are very sheer, as you can see below on my arm.

"Ambient Strobe Lighting Powders give off the most amazing glow to your skin without being overpowering. I love using them with the Ambient Strobe Light Sculptor when I want a more reflective highlight." - Carisa Janes, Hourglass Founder

I couldn't decide among the colors, so I ended up with all four of them, thanks to  sweet friend who works for Hourglass.  Brilliant is shown above at top left, and Euphoric is shown at top right. On the bottom row, Incandescent is shown at left, with Iridescent at right. I sure hope I got that right. I swatched in the order listed here.

I tried to apply them dry and heavily with a sponge-tipped applicator, and I took my photo in full sun. Nevertheless, the sheerness of these powders made them disappear into my skin. I can see the stripes of subtle color and a bit of sparkle, but little else. Euphoric shows up pretty well; it's the golden tone second down on my arm. Did I need all four of them? Nope.

How does Hourglass recommend that you apply Ambient Strobe Lighting Powders? By using their Ambient Strobe Light Sculptor  - wet or dry to achieve varying levels of intensity, taking you from day to night.
  • To broaden a narrow forehead, gently dab the angled side of the Sculptor to the middle of the forehead.
  • To give height to the nose, sweep the tip of the Sculptor down the bridge of nose. Add more to the tip of the nose for a lifted effect.
  • To accentuate the cheekbones and lift the brows, sweep the angled side of the Sculptor along the tops of the cheekbones, up towards the top of the brow in a “crescent moon” shape.
  • To open up the eye area, dab the tip of the Sculptor under the brow bone and in the inner corners of the eyes.
  • To create the look of fuller lips, dab the tip of the Sculptor on the Cupid’s bow.
  • Use the flocked side of the Sculptor to blend and diffuse any harsh edges. Powder can be layered, gradually building up to your desired intensity.
The idea of strobing has tickled me. Young makeup artists are all excited about this new method. They aren't old enough to know that highlighting, strobing, or whatever you want to call it is old - very old. It's often used with contouring, also an old method, to highlight the areas of the face you want to bring forward and darken the areas you want to recede.

I think of these Hourglass powders as highlighting powders. They do sparkle, so you may want to limit their use to nightime occasions. If you are comfortable with micro-glitter, you can use them during the day.

Have you tried them? You can find them at Sephora and Hourglass.

The Friday Forum Plus an Event with Dr. Gregory Bays Brown from RéVive Skin Care

Today, Neiman Marcus at Tysons Galleria had an event with one of my favorite people: Dr. Greg Brown from RéVive Skin Care. It was hopping in there. Customers had appointments to spend 15 minutes with Dr. Brown, who helped them with any concerns they expressed about their skin. Everyone wanted a consultation - so much so that women who didn't realize it was a "by appointment" event would just jump in and take the chair next to him the moment another customer got up. His sparkling reputation preceded him.

The young lady with him was a customer who was willing to have her photo taken with Dr. Brown. I was glad to see a young women who was so interested in skin care.

To recap prior posts here at Best Things in Beauty, after years as a successful plastic surgeon, Dr. Brown started a research laboratory dedicated to increasing the healing rates of burn victims' wounds. Though his clinical research, he discovered a unique bioengineered protein molecule (Epidermal Growth Factor or EGF) that accelerated burn healing. When the molecule was added to the patient's wound-care treatment, healing was accelerated.

What does this have to do with skin care? As we age, cell division slows. As it slows, we develop signs of aging, including wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, sagging skin, and a loss of radiance. The development of wrinkles is actually similar to an injury to the skin. Dr. Brown found that if he could kick-start cells to turn over more rapidly than they would normally, he could postpone the inevitable signs of aging and give the skin a much-needed boost. He started to experiment with the molecule that had helped burn patients so markedly, dissolving it into Elizabeth Arden's Visible Difference. The results were amazingly effective. He found that his "cream" allowed him to regenerate the skin in a way he couldn't with a scalpel. A face lift can lift the skin, but it won't make it glow. RéVive will make you glow.

RéVive Skin Care has had a remarkable history, and now there are many products - all fabulous - to address every skin-care issue. Today, he and I talked briefly about his new sunscreen. He said, "It's not sexy, but I think it's exciting." Soleil Superiéur Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA ++++ ($115) is powered by RES Technology and an advanced UV Defense System. This luxuriously lightweight sunscreen is ultra-transparent and gives you superb in-sun protection while helping repair visible signs of aging. That's why it's so cool - it's not only a sunscreen, but it will also repair your skin. You can see the ingredients at the link above.

The advanced UV Defense System helps:
  • Fight signs of early skin aging with broad spectrum SPF 50 protection;
  • Visibly smooth out lines and wrinkles caused by environmental aggressors; and
  • Improve the skin’s firmness and elasticity.
Dr. Brown says, “The most important anti-aging product that anyone can use is a sunscreen." From concept to inception, Soleil Superiéur took five years to perfect. This product is endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation. It has been granted a Seal of Approval for daily use, a sign of the product - and the brand’s - commitment to developing effective sun protection.

I want this sunscreen! It's on my list for my first paycheck at my new job. I love the idea that I can repair my skin while protecting it. I also learned today that RéVive has a new volumizing mask coming out in April. I can't wait.

It's time for The Friday Forum. The Friday Forum has always been an opportunity to share information. Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Tell us about it! Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Tell us why! Do you have questions others might be able to answer? We can help! Want to talk about skin care? I'm game. Just use the comments. We have busy weekends and slow ones on the forum. I hope you are ready to share, especially since it's still Beauty Event at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

ARMANI PRIMA - Advanced Skin Care for Day-Long Makeup Glow

Giorgio Armani Beauty has introduced ARMANI PRIMA, its first complete skin-care line that improves skin quality and enhances makeup glow so that it lasts all day long. Born from a unique collaboration between the backstage expertise of Linda Cantello, Giorgio Armani International Makeup Artist, and Giorgio Armani Beauty laboratories, the ARMANI PRIMA Beauty routine consists of three innovative products for face, lips, and eyes. It's an out-of-the-box technical formulation approach to provide simple and efficient skin-care solutions in favor of makeup’s staying power.
  • Glow-On Moisturizing Balm
  • Day-Long Skin Perfector/Trouble Zones
  • Eye & Lip Contour Perfector
The name ARMANI PRIMA is a nod to the oil painting technique widely used by the impressionists who worked with natural light without retouching.
    No More Makeup Touch-Ups
Women unanimously complain that their makeup never has the same radiant glow as it has just after their morning beauty routine. As the day progresses, the skin quality deteriorates (loss of moisture, sebum production, enlarged pores) and is exposed to environmental aggressors. When skin is imperfect, the makeup glow doesn’t last and even smudges, losing its impact.

Now for the first time, Giorgio Armani Beauty offers an innovative, tailor-made solution to keep your complexion and makeup touch-up-free all day. ARMANI PRIMA’s revolutionary new skin-care products contain a special blend of active ingredients that maintain skin’s moisture level, regulates sebum production, and strengthens the skin barrier so that the face keeps the glow of just-applied makeup and the benefits are visible all day.

“Today, we live in a fast-paced world. Women expect immediate results. That’s what we created with ARMANI PRIMA, which is the first skincare conceived for makeup wearers.” - Linda Cantello, Giorgio Armani International Makeup Artist

    Glow-On Moisturizing Balm

The Glow-On Moisturizing Balm ($110) is the cornerstone of the ARMANI PRIMA line. It was formulated to achieve glow, plump, and maximum moisture that last 24 hours. This could only be achieved by a patented formula and unique process: a surprising compact texture, hot poured at 45°C that quickly breaks into a fresh fluid that penetrates immediately. The formula is an inversed emulsion active on the internal and external skin layers. The internal phase maximizes the concentration of moisturizing and plumping active ingredients; the external phase then creates a protective barrier on skin surface, locking in moisture. This is achieved through a high concentration of hydrovance and hyaluronic acid for continuous hydration and glycerin for skin plumping. The Giorgio Armani signature glowing complexion effect is enhanced by the “Liquid Mirror” complex, which ensures a prolonged reflection of the light on the skin. Thanks to this technological breakthrough, here is what you should see.
    • Immediately: Skin is deeply moisturized and plumped with heightened radiance. Perfect compatibility with foundation for an easy and fault proof makeup application.
    • At the end of the day: Skin quality and moisture level is maintained. Foundation looks fresh, as if just applied.
    • After four weeks: Overall skin quality is improved. More comfortable, supple, and nourished skin. Fine lines look evened out.
    Day-Long Skin Perfector/Trouble Zones

Day-Long Skin Perfector/Trouble Zones ($100), is an innovative skin-care product that contains a strong concentration of “Prima Skin Complex,” an impressive active ingredient, which is lipophilic to absorb sebum and hydrophobic to repel sweat. It immediately smoothes skin and regulates the water and lipid levels on skin surface all day long.

The Skin Perfector targets the “disruption zone” of the face (i.e., eyelids, around the nose, chin, forehead, or any area prone to shine or large pores). It absorbs excess sebum delivering an instant mattifying effect on skin that lasts all day long. Thanks to a unique milky gel texture, the Skin Perfector absorbs rapidly, leaving a clean skin sensation that lasts all day. A combination of two hydrophilic ingredients provides a tightening effect and a feeling of comfort, making the product perfect for all skin
    types.
    • Immediately: Trouble zones are smoothed and mattified in transparency. Foundation and eye shadow are easier to apply.
    • At the end of the day: Makeup glow and color are intact.
    • After four weeks: Skin texture is improved and skin surface appears smoother.
    Eye & Lip Contour Perfector

A skin-perfecting formula for lips and under eyes, Eye & Lip Contour Perfector ($70) is an ingenious two-in-one product that targets the lips and under-eye area. It contains buckwheat extract and haloxyl for their stimulating effects, reducing dark circles and under-eye puffiness over time. Glycerin, jojoba butter, and hydralip give intensified hydration and reduce fine lines. The effective results of this skin-care product is clearly measurable in improvements to dark circles and a toning, lifting
effect under the eyelids, as well as a significant reduction in wrinkles and fine lines around the lips. Eye & Lip Contour Perfector should not be used on the eyelids.
    • Immediately: Lines and dark circles are blurred. Light reflection on the skin surface is amplified to make eyes look brighter and skin looks more luminous. Application and hold of dark circle concealer are improved. Lips and contour are smoothed, preventing lipstick from bleeding into the fine lines.
    • At the end of the day: Skin feels more comfortable, supple, and nourished.
    • After four weeks: Dark circles appear reduced, the outline of eyes and lips appear more defined.
All three products have an addictive scent. The Glow-on Moisturizing Balm and the Skin Perfector envelop the skin delicately with a feminine flora-aqua creation based on Armani/Privé Rose d’Alexandrie (I have that fragrance, and I love it). The soft notes of the premium fragrance line are translated into skin care, in a subtle note of Rose of May, Bergamot, and Italian Mandarin and Benzoin - all nice notes. It's a beauty routine wrapped up in gentleness.

    Here are suggested application methods.
    • Face: apply the Glow-On Moisturizing Balm over the entire face using circular massaging movements.
    • Trouble zones: apply the Day-Long Skin Perfector/Trouble Zones on the forehead, nose, chin, eyelids, and over the upper lip, sweeping the product outwards.
    • Dark circles and lips: apply the Eye & Lip Contour Perfector under the eye area and directly on and around the lips.
These new products are available at the Armani Beauty Web site now. They will appear at store counters in March. I suspect if your skin is mature, and you are using Crema Nera now, you will want to stick with it. These new products appear to me to be aimed at a demographic that doesn't need the hydrating, anti-aging power of Crema Nera.

    Know Your Ingredients: Propylene Glycol

I was stunned when I read years ago in Allure that dermatologist Doris Day was plugging propylene glycol. She remarked that it's a good humectant for sensitive skin. Today, a conversation at the makeup counter reminded me that many of you weren't reading BTiB six years ago and might find this post interesting.

Propylene glycol is a humectant. It makes the skin feel moist and soft, and it keeps your products from drying out. It's also a carrier in fragrance oils, a solvent, a de-icer used on airplanes, and an anti-freeze. It's ubiquitous. It's used in so many beauty products (cosmetics, skin care, toothpaste, deodorant, and more), you'll be amazed if you start reading labels. Unfortunately, it's bad for the environment (it depletes oxygen in surface water), and it can cause contact dermatitis when used in concentrations over 2% (and for some skin, even lower concentrations). The findings on the effects of propylene glycol have been published in respected medical journals.

The Material Safety Data Sheet for propylene glycol says it may be harmful by ingestion or skin absorption. Remember, that's at a very high concentration. Chronic exposure may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, headache, and vomiting, along with central nervous system depression. If you get it on your skin, wash with soap and water - the very premise of Dr. Day's recommendation for cleansers! Granted, full-strength, industrial propylene glycol isn't in your beauty products, but what strength is OK for daily application to your skin? We don't know.

I disagree with Paula Begoun, self-described Cosmetics Cop, on most of her product reviews. In her Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary, she describes propylene glycol as harmless. Could that be because she uses propylene glycol in her products?

Why do so many beauty companies, including luxury companies, use it? It's cheap. Plain and simple - it's cheap. It's legal too. Many companies prefer to use it over better, but more expensive humectants, and they count on having uninformed customers. Chances are good that you've been using products containing propylene glycol for years. That doesn't necessarily make them good for you.

I read labels. When a product has a high concentration of propylene glycol (near the top of the ingredient list), I skip it and select something else. Remember, you can still buy cigarettes, but that doesn't make them good for you.

Photo courtesy of Dow, which believes that propylene glycol is non-irritating to skin and harmless to aquatic life. They sell it.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Silk Aether Long-lasting Duo Cream Eye Shadow in Gossamer Wing

Rouge Bunny Rouge, one of my favorite beauty companies, makes a Long-lasting Duo Cream Eye Shadow (in the U.S. $45 at Beautyhabit) that caress your skin with the ease of a butterfly wing beat, so that your lids appear smooth and renewed while coated with a semi-matte, slightly luminous color. Rouge Bunny Rouge sent me Gosssamer Wing (#085) last summer, and I've been enjoying it since.

All Rouge Bunny Rouge products grow from the Enchanted Garden with a story...
Deep inside one of the Enchanted Garden's dense jungles, surrounded by thick and leafy rainforest, lies the Butterfly Makers' Workshop. As the hot monsoon rains drum down upon its roof, inside there is serene calm, as hundreds of the most skillful tailors labor lovingly over exquisitely fine fabrics, cutting and moulding them with a precision that only a select few can ever manage to attain. Rolls of light and airy chiffon, luxuriant velvet, delicate white batiste, and sparkling brocade are cut, smoothed, and shaped by the expert fingers of the craftsmen. A tailor will close his eyes, and fabric in hand, imagine on a mental canvas the image of a perfect, elegant butterfly. After many hours of work, the outline of smooth wings becomes apparent, absent of the smallest crinkle. It is said that some of the butterflies are so perfect that they burst forth from the fingers of the tailors. Acquiring a life of their own, they mingle with the light and fly away into the rainforest, gently flapping their smooth, silky wings.

How magical! Inspired by these very butterflies that sprang to life, Rouge Bunny Rouge introduced Silk Aether Long-lasting Duo Cream Eye Shadow. The Long-lasting Duo Cream Eye Shadows are an irresistible combination of exceptionally long-wear, non-crease, richly pigmented and smudge-proof qualities in one formula. The extreme long-lasting effect is delivered through synthetic filming polymers, which ensure a perfect appearance all day.

The light, mousse-like texture ensures an effortless application. Best control is achieved by innovative silicon waxes and gels in combination with beeswax. Rouge Bunny Rouge added Para Cress Flower Extract to stimulate natural skin lifting capabilities and Coffee Extract to increase collagen and elastin production while also enhancing the natural skin defenses. The airtight vials protect the precious formula; the soft sponge applicators allow me to pick up the perfect amount of product with each application and also layer it if I want more color. Apply one layer, and you will achieve a satin wash. Apply a stronger application, and the shadow will become opaque, slightly metallic, and a darker hue of the same color.

The packaging is perfect to take along in your makeup bag in case you want to refresh your makeup before a night on the town. However, I've found that this eye shadow says on a very long time, so I don't have to refresh it after work.

Gossamer Wing could not be a more perfect neutral combination for me - for anyone, I'll bet. Rouge Bunny Rouge describes it as a perfect match of a velvety café latte, paired with the most flattering, silky luminous beige.

I applied it using its own sponge-tipped applicator and evened it out without blending it into my arm too much. I took my swatch photo in one of the rare moments today when we had sunshine peeking through the clouds.

The darker shade at the top of my arm is easy to see. The lighter shade, a perfect base or brightening color, is shown below. I can see the lighter shade in the photo; I hope you can. It is a tiny bit more beige than my skin, and it's definitely more luminous (without being sparkly).

Rouge Bunny Rouge offers tips for application. You can line, shade, and contour your eyes sheerly or in a more dramatic way. Use the lighter shade to highlight the inner corners of the eyes and the area underneath the brow bones. Use the slightly deeper shade along the crease to add a natural looking contour. Blend the two shades together to create a flawless nude finish and an even tone along the lids.

For an added boost of longevity, dab and blend a pea-sized amount of Aqua Primer, Mattifying Primer, or Luminous Skin Wand over your clean lid. Follow by applying Duo Cream Eye Shadow for a waterproof, long-lasting base for your favorite powdered eye shadow. For natural looking, bright, and luminous eyes, blend either shade of the Duo Cream Eye Shadow from the lash line to just underneath the brow’s edge using Rouge Bunny Rouge's Large Shader Brush #003.

You can see the ingredients here. To order, hop over to Rouge Bunny Rouge or Beautyhabit.

    MOROCCANOIL Body Dry Body Oil

I adore dry oils for the face and body, so imagine my delight when MOROCCANOIL Body sent me their Dry Body Oil ($48) to try. It was nestled in a box with other wonderful products, but my eyes went straight to the Body Oil. Like all MOROCCCANOIL Body products, it comes in a beautiful turquoise box. The oil comes with a regular white screw-on cap, and the sprayer to replace it is nestled in an insert next to the bottle. It's as classy as it gets.

Described as instant moisture that achieves soft, silky results, MOROCCANOIL Body Dry Body Oil Fragrance Originale infuses skin with the antioxidant-rich, nourishing properties of argan oil rich in essential fatty acids, as well as olive and avocado oils. The weightless formula absorbs very quickly to lock in moisture, while soothing dry areas and improving overall skin texture and tone. It is delicately fragranced with the signature MOROCCANOIL scent called Fragrance Originale that evokes to me a beach in paradise. It doesn't smell like suntan lotion or coconut, but it reminds me of sun, sand, and waves. Perhaps I have an active imagination.

If I'm really dry, I will apply the oil extravagantly, pouring a bit into my palm and applying it after a shower. Under normal circumstances (when I'm dry, but not parched), I use the sprayer and apply a light film that I massage into my skin - often right before bed).

I know that you were first aware of MOROCCANOIL as an excellent hair product. There is a really fun YouTube video on the company's site featuring Rosie Huntington-Whitley and her tousled, glamorous hair.

Back to the body products, there are many different types. MOROCCANOIL takes care of all skin types in various delectable scents. Fleur d'Oranger is one of my favorites. You can check them out at the company's Web site or Nordstrom. I think Barneys New York may carry it too. I have other treasures to show you, so I'll be featuring them often.

MOROCCANOIL Body's products are paraben-free. The Dry Body Oil is made in Canada. Shipping is free, and with orders of $55 or more, you will receive a complimentary (and wonderful) hand cream sample. Give them a try!

The Friday Forum Plus Chantecaille Lip Chic for Spring 2016

Chantecaille's Lip Chics ($36) for Spring looked very pretty in the promotional photo, but they are even better in person. I swatched them yesterday at Neiman Marcus. I wanted you to see the three new shades.

Chantecaille's Lip Chic is a hybrid between a lip gloss and lipstick - my kind of lip color.  It combines the high shine and plumping effects of a gloss with the rich, even coverage of a lipstick. The exceptionally comfortable formula is easy to apply and creates an even finish that is shiny and beautiful. Lip Chic leaves lips looking fuller and decidedly more youthful in appearance - and never irritated. Lip Chics apply with an incredibly soft, lightweight texture and helps smooth the appearance of the lips.

Gaia is shown at the top of my arm. It's a soft, shimmering earthy caramel. Wild Poppy, shown in the middle, is a sheer, vibrant poppy red with a touch of coral. Red Juniper is a classic and sophisticated berry red. My photo was taken in full sun.

I was afraid that Wild Poppy might be too coral for me, but it's not - it's beautiful. Gaia is my kind of nude/brown shade, and Red Juniper is the only kind of red I can wear. It has enough sheerness that I look bright and natural, not like a kid  playing grownup.

Now I want all three of these shades, which can be found at Barney's New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Frederick Fekkai Salons, Neiman Marcus, Space NK, select Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's locations, and Chantecaille's Web site.

We had a snow storm Monday of this week (5-6 inches), that washed away with heavy rains the next morning. Now, the predictions are for a 60+ degree weekend. It's already pothole hell here. I imagine that some roads will be impassable by next week. I look for the holes, but some catch me by surprise. I see a re-alignment job in my future in the spring.

I hope you are ready to share, especially since it's still Beauty Event in the stores.

Chantecaille Le Magnolia Eye and Cheek Palette for Spring 2016

Chantecaille's Spring 2016 Collection is all about the beauty of nature. It channels the grounding feeling of serenity when you are truly lost in the beauty of nature. Inspired by blooming fields of wildflowers, the look is romantic, bohemian, and effortless.

Imperfections are blurred, and cheeks are glowing with a flattering flush of coral. Eyes are effortlessly enhanced with a wash of pale, silvery sage anchored by earthy browns. A delicate touch of shimmering cream puts focus on the eyes and plays against a burst of bold, juicy color on the lips for a youthful look that is modern and refreshing. - Chantecaille

The centerpiece of the Spring 2016 collection is the limited-edition Le Magnolia Eye and Cheek Palette ($83, refillable). It is shown above and directly below.

The shades in the palette are Leaf at the top left, a unique, pale, pearly sage green that instantly brightens the eye area on the lid or lash line; Magnolia at top right, a delicate and slightly iridescent pearl white; Bark at bottom right, a semi-matte rich gentle brown to define and contour; and Wild at bottom left, a fun, playful coral that adds a flush to the cheeks.

I finally got a day without a cloud in the sky and was able to get swatch photos for you. I used sponge-tipped applicators and took my photos outside Neiman Marcus.

I remember that there was a question about the Sage. Is it green or grey? It's actually either or both. The appearance depends on the lighting. When I swatched it on my arm, my eyes saw sage green, but my camera has trouble with subtle greens, and I think it looks a bit too grey in my photos.

Magnolia is a perfect base shade. You can see it looks light pink on my arm. The brown Bark is indeed a gentle brown - not nearly as dark as it appears in the compact. The Wild blush is a beautiful warm pink coral. Naturally, you would not apply it as heavily when using it as a blush as I applied it to my arm to show you the shades.

I think this is a beautiful palette, another in a succession of treasures from Chantecaille. With each season, the company adopts a non-profit cause to help the environment and wildlife. This year it's TRAFFIC.

Chantecaille uses botanicals sourced from around the world. It's important to the company that the natural ingredients they use are harvested in socially and ecological ways. The beauty and health-care industries demand for wild plant ingredients is increasing. Unfortunately, some plants are being harvested in a non-sustainable manner. Houpu Magnolia is one such example. Once, thousands of magnolia trees grew wild all over China. Demands for the trees bark, prized for its anti-inflammatory properties and used abundantly in Chinese medicine as well as the cosmetic industry has contributed to the plant being extremely rare in its native habitats in China.

Chantecaille created Le Magnolia Eye and Cheek Palette to increase awareness of TRAFFIC's work to improve the outlook for wild plant species and the livelihoods of people around the world through supporting the widespread adoption of the FairWild Standard. Embossed with a magnolia, this limited-edition complements the delicate watercolor hues seen on the 2016 runways. Five percent of the proceeds of each palette sold will be donated to TRAFFIC to support their wild plant conservation work.

I also swatched this season's Lip Chics. They are much prettier in person than they are in the promotional photos. I will show them to you very soon.

Chantecaille's Spring 2016 Collection will be available this month at Barney's New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Frederick Fekkai Salons, Neiman Marcus, Space NK, select Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's locations. You can already purchase it at Chantecaille's Web site.

If you would like to work with a Chantecaille representative at Neiman Marcus for Beauty Week, give Jeannine Barnes a call at (202) 966-9700, extension 2289. She will take very good care of you. I've known her a long time, and I can make that promise without hesitation.

TATCHA A Plum Blossom 23-Karat Gold Illuminated Lipstick - Revisited

My beautiful, limited-edition A Plum Blossom 23-Karat Gold Illuminated Lipstick ($55), a gift from TATCHA, finally arrived. Perhaps FedEx took it to Alaska on its way. It certainly looked like Alaska here on Monday. Anyone could have been confused.

I already had a high level of anticipation from TATCHA's publicity, Eileen's photos here in Best Things in Beauty, and The Beauty Look Book's gorgeous photos, but nothing could have prepared me for its arrival and the sensory treat of opening the gift-wrapped box to find the presentation I had received. TATCHA has such class!

Look at the box photos above. I'm already picturing the beautiful box on my bureau, holding my earrings. Inside, it's just as pretty. Unwrapping this lipstick was a total delight for my senses. Removing the magnetic top from the tube was as elegant as it gets in lipstick land, and then gazing at the chiseled lipstick bullet was an extra-added benefit. Imagine me hyperventilating, and you have a good image of what it was like here a bit earlier.

I had a small window of full sunshine immediately after it arrived, so I hopped right outside to take a few photos. Like Eileen, I made one pass on my arm with the lipstick. I could have layered it to achieve a richer color, but I chose the one I saw on my arm with one pass. It's gorgeous. It has color and shine. What you can't see here is how hydrating it feels on my lips.

By now, you should know that lipsticks look lighter on my pale arm than they do on my lips, which carry their own color. The best approximation I can normally give you is a finger pad, where I always test lipsticks in stores. The pad of your finger is darker than your wrist, so it's a good place to test lipstick shades.

Unfortunately, today it was cold outside, stripping my fingers of the color I see on them right now, as I write - even making them puffy. That's why I photographed two finger pads to show you how little color they carried today. Still, A Plum Blossom was shining with the energy of the sun and an unparalleled radiance.

I would describe A Plum Blosson much the way Eileen did. It's a mauve-tinged pink, semi-sheer, and glowing. My lips bring out the mauve in the shade, and the light dances on A Plum Blossom, giving it as many facets as a rare cut gem. TATCHA says it was inspired by the iconic pink Japanese Plum Blossom peeking through a snowy Kyoto morning wrapped in golden light. Its texture? Plum fruit and silk extracts richly hydrate lips for for a creamy, lustrous finish to flatter any complexion, day or night.

Now for the bad news. It's sold out at TATCHA's Web site. I hope they order more. I knew it would sell quickly. Half of their stock sold the first day it was offered. The good news is that you can pre-order it at Barneys New York for delivery in March, only a few weeks away. That's currently your best bet for purchasing this exquisite lipstick.

Of course, it's available on eBay. One just sold there for $45.99. Some greedy individuals bought it for resale and raised the price to a usurious level ($99.99, for example). I mention eBay just in case you passed it on my first mention, but are now painfully regretting your decision and want it right now. Ordinarily, I do not promote eBay as a source for new beauty products.

I love TATCHA's A Plum Blossom 23-Karat Gold Illuminated Lipstick. I'm going to go do a happy dance.

Update 2/18: The box, I realized, was a gift to me from TATCHA. They used it to send my lipstick.

Mémoire Liquide Amour Liquide Reserve Edition Eau de Parfum

Recently, Mémoire Liquide sent me a full-sized bottle of Amour Liquide Reserve Edition Eau de Parfum ($95) for review, and they included in the box a lovely sample of Amour Liquide Reserve Edition Crème de la Crème ($24) to match. This was the perfect fragrance to tide me over a polar vortex and snow storm.

The scent can best be described by its notes...
The memory of exhilarating, romantic love, at once soul soothing and breathtaking Pure Madagascar Vanilla, Tonka Bean, and Incense. Top Note: Black Orchid, Middle Note: Tonka Bean, Madagascar Vanilla. A base of Incense.

When I spray Amour Liquide on my skin, I smell the vanilla and tonka bean immediately. It's a warm, gourmand fragrance, and it stays that way throughout its long life on my skin. Fairly quickly, I detect a modest incense - one I love. Incense and I have a difficult history. I associate it with priests burning incense in their liturgical vessels, thuribles, and swinging them toward the congregation. That holy ritual was always followed by me, gagging and coughing. For a long time, I wouldn't touch fragrances with incense.

Then, Giorgio Armani showed me the way, with a gorgeous and relaxing incense in one of my favorite fragrances of his. After that, I began to open up to incense, but never blind-bought. I had to give it a sniff test first. Fortunately, with no prior sniff test, I love the incense in Amour Liquide. It has the most relaxing effect on me. I like to wear it to bed. There's something about it that helps me unwind and drift off to sleep, smelling comfortable vanilla and tonka. Perhaps the Angels are visiting me.

The Crème de la Crème, which you can sometimes find in a boxed set, is just as divine, but not as strong as the EdP. It has the same effect on me when I wear it: cozy, comfy, and relaxed.

My friend Gaia of The Non-Blonde and I are almost fragrance opposites. If I like a fragrance, she is unlikely to love it - and vice versa. She reviewed Amour Liquide and found it pleasant, but not as complex as I know she prefers her perfumes. While she envisioned the addition of zesty notes, I'm very pleased with the way Amour Liquide runs its course on my skin, and I'm thrilled to have it.

You can find Mémoire Liquide Amour Liquide Reserve EdP at Mémoire Liquide's Web site, Nordstrom, and Amazon, among other sources. If you order from the company's Web site and use the code Blog2016, you will receive a 20% discount.

Another Snowy Day Plus What Beauty Treasures Do You Miss?

I wanted to blog today, but I am taking a snow day. We've had about five inches of snow so far today, and we are expecting freezing rain to start this afternoon. I took the photo above about an hour ago when I went to put peanuts in the feeder for the second time today. That blob on the ground is a cardinal cleaning up the few I spilled.

I wanted to share my Valentine's picture of Mom. She is her reclining chair, kept warm with a throw. She's 93 now, so she gets cold easily. I bought her chocolate-covered strawberries and another dessert. Plus we had a vodka sauce lasagne for her Valentine's dinner.

I wanted to ask you a question. What beauty treasure do you really miss, but is discontinued and impossible to find? I'll get us started. I miss Estée Lauder Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelée. Over a few years, Estée Lauder introduced multiple colors, and they were all gorgeous. I looked forward to each season's new shade. Click on this link to see Crystal Baby. I think it's ashamed that Estée Lauder appears to have ceded its color line to Aerin Lauder. Sadly, I think her makeup is boring. In an effort to revive its color lines (I assume), the company is introducing colors to be promoted by two Jenner (aka Kardashian) gals. I have no interest in enriching that family.

How about you?  What would you love to see introduced on the market again?

New Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo Complete Care Lipshine

Whether you will be checking out new products at the stores during the beauty events or holing up inside and shopping online to avoid the cold, you must check out Chanel's new Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo Complete Care Lipshine ($37). I was extremely grateful when a friend in the beauty industry gave me a gift of one at Christmas time (it was an advance preview). I had my choice of shades, and I chose #218, Script. I could just have easily selected Article, Lettre - all of the shades are gorgeous, but I didn't want to be greedy. I chose one. Even better than the extraordinary color of this Lipshine, I love the formula.

    Here's how Chanel describes it...
The intensity of a lipstick, the shine of a lip gloss, and the comfort of a lip balm - all in one creamy yet lightweight formula. This innovative formula is enriched with nourishing Apple seed extract and hydrating jojoba oil and coconut oil. Silk powder, beeswax, and special ingredients help visibly smooth, plump, and add brilliant 3D shine to the lips. Stylo Complete Lipshine is available in a spectrum of eight irresistible shades, featuring pinks, reds, nudes, and corals. In a convenient, twist-up "stylo" form to write your color signature.

This new Lipshine offers everything I love in a lip color. It looks great, feels great, hydrates, applies evenly (much better on my lips than over my arm tendon), is a hybrid between transparent and rich (depending on how you apply it), and provides pretty and lasting color. I took a swatch photo of Script just a few minutes ago.

I would describe Script as a cool coral. Combined with the pink in my lips, it's a great color on me - even with my cool-toned skin. It warms my appearance. It is much prettier than it looks online in that little square color representation.

You can see all of the colors at Chanel's Web site. Even better, though, visit a Chanel counter in the next few weeks. You might be surprised at the shade you choose, and you'll want to spend enough to bring home a pretty tote. If you need help on the phone, please call one of my buddies: Nicki at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie at (202) 966-9700, extension 2258, or Rahman at Neiman Marcus Tysons Galleria at (703) 761-1600. Ask for the Chanel counter.

The Friday Forum - February 12

This is the first time I remember Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus having their Beauty Events during same date period. They have overlapped in the past, but not so totally. The Saks tote is shown above. I'm hoping that little puff can be removed. The silver bag looks nice. I'm planning to head over to Saks Chevy Chase tomorrow - in the cold.

Saks posted this beautiful photo of Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci on its Web site. I have been hoping Neiman Marcus Mazza would bring Gucci into the store. It's available on the Web site, but not in my local stores.

Yesterday, I had a divine complimentary one-hour facial by Barbara (from Bergdorf Goodman) at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie. She will be back next week (February 17, I think, but confirm that with Michael Reinhardt if you are local to DC. I highly recommend you go! Michael and his counter partner Andy can be reached at (202) 966-9700, extension 2258.

It looks bright outside. I have Chanel photos to take, but there is significant cloud cover. I'm waiting to see if the clouds burn off mid-day. I really want to show you the new Chanel lipstick, Rouge Coco Stylo Complete Care Lipshine. I need to show you as the Beauty Events start. I've also promised to get new Chantecaille swatch photos. I would have taken them yesterday, but I forgot to take my camera over to Neiman Marcus. If we get socked in with clouds this weekend, I'll feature some fabulous fragrances. I haven't forgotten that comment asking for fragrance features.

For those of you who have enjoyed following Monsieur Guerlain on Facebook, he's back! I'm pleased. He is inspirational, and his knowledge of the Guerlain fragrances is almost unparalleled.

There are some fabulous weekend discounts to be used. The best in my opinion? Beautyhabit is offering 20% off of your $100 purchase with the code LOVE20. The wonderful niche fragrance line Imaginary Authors is offering free shipping with purchases of $30 or more through February 15. Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram have been filled with special offers. If you like certain brands, make sure to follow them on social media to save money.

I hope you are ready to share.

    Happy Valentine's Day!

Update 2/13: The Saks tote is not silver. It is white with what looks like gold throughout. It's a great bag for summer. The puffy ornament does come off. You will have your choice of blue (best in my opinion), black, or white.

Le Métier de Beauté - Poised to Stun at the Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie Trend and Beauty Events

As most, if not all, of you know, Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie offers a tote bag containing samples as a GWP at its Beauty Events. If you spend $125 in Beauty from February 13 to 28, you will have a choice of a gold or orange tote. The orange one resembles the Hermès signature color. I like them both. The real treats, though, are at specific brands offering GWPs. Le Métier de Beauté at Mazza Gallerie is ready to pamper and reward you - not only at Beauty Event, but also at Trend Event. (I know, even I'm confused.)

This year, the Mazza Gallerie store also has a fashion Trend Event that will, for the first time, reward fashion purchases of $350 or more with a beauty gift. The Trend Event starts today and ends on February 17.

Two new Le Métier de Beauté skin-care products have arrived in time for both events, They are shown under the flowers above. I tried both products in the store and was impressed. Vital ET Recovery Boost Face ($250) is formulated with a potent dose of vitamin E to protect against free radicals and reduce overall redness. Vital ET Recovery Boost Face is rich and absorbs "deep into the skin" to instantly hydrate and restore, leaving skin radiant, rejuvenated, and intensely moisturized. Unlike other pore-clogging moisturizers, this oil-free moisturizer absorbs into the skin for faster results.

Vital ET Recovery Boost Body ($125) is also formulated with a vitamin E that helps to prevent free radicals from doing future damage to your skin. It rescues and restores extreme cases of dry, dehydrated skin like mine. It felt heavenly after application. With a highly concentrated topical recovery treatment, this formula is quickly absorbed to shield skin, replenish lost moisture, soften, and soothe. It is intended to be applied daily (I would use before bed) to maintain hydrated skin that looks and feels great.

If you spend $350 at Le Métier de Beauté during the Trend Event, you will receive your choice of the Brigitte Kaleidoscope (a $95 value), shown at the top of this feature, or the new Vital ET Recovery Boost Face ($250). To my knowledge, you cannot purchase Brigitte, a warm, adventurous, and alluring combination of colors that can be worn alone, or blended/layered to create a neutral smoky eye. It's really flexible. Neiman Marcus provided one for me (gratis) to swatch and show you the beautiful colors. Michael Reinhardt used it on me last week when he did my makeup, and I was smitten.

I swatched, starting at the top tier of the Kaleidoscope and moving down. The top tier is St. Tropez, a perfect neutral, lightening base. You can barely see it at the top of my arm in the photo above. I took my photos of Brigitte in full sun, and I swatched with a sponge-tipped applicator (not terribly neatly, I'm afraid - it was cold outside). Le Métier de Beauté recommends applying Séduction (the grey on the second tier) from your lash line to your natural crease. The third tier is Liberté, a gorgeous copper. You could gently press it over your entire eyelid, or apply however you like to wear copper. I'd apply it in my crease and the outer third of my lid. Deux, the fourth tier, is a medium charcoal grey. Michael applied it on me as a liner, smudged over a liquid, waterproof liner. Brigitte is one of the prettiest Kaleidoscopes I've used in months. I love it because I can wear it during the day. I don't get out much at night anymore - it's winter.

Moving on to the Beauty Event, which runs from February 13 to 28, if you spend $400 with Le Métier de Beauté, you will receive a cosmetics bag with a brand new, full-sized lipstick called Cerise (pink) and a one-time-use sample of the company's new Red Algae Collagen Mask (not yet introduced), and a deluxe travel size of the new Instant Lifting and Firming Serum (to be launched in April, $350). If you spend $500, you will also receive a step-up gift of the Chem60 Pro-Peel (full size, $165).

Wait, there's more. On February 11 and 17, you can make an appointment for a complimentary facial with Barbara, Le Métier de Beauté's aesthetician. I was treated to her facial a few months ago, and I felt pampered. My skin looked fabulous when she finished with me. I may go back for another tomorrow.

On February 25, Hylton Lea, the Global Director of Skincare, will lead a master class. That same day, a national makeup artist from Dallas will be at the store doing makeup consultations and applications.

If you want to participate in the facial, master class, or makeup session, you should call Michael Reinhardt (or Andy) at (202) 966-9700, extension 2258, to make an appointment. Otherwise, you can stop in anytime during the events, and Michael or Andy will help you with skin care or makeup.

Have I totally confused you? Michael would be glad to help you if you don't have a Neiman Marcus near you. I really don't know if all stores are having the same events or GWPs.

TATCHA A Plum Blossom Lipstick Photos from Eileen

I know that many of you have been waiting to see swatch photos of TATCHA's new A Plum Blossom limited-edition lipstick. TATCHA published photos on Facebook, and if you haven't seen them, you should go look. The company told us that half have already sold out.

Eileen volunteered to help out here so that you could see her tube and swatch. Since I wouldn't be able to take photos in the snow, even if the one TATCHA graciously sent me arrives today, it's Eileen to the rescue.

She sent me two swatch photos, and I selected the one I know to be most true. It was taken in sunshine. Eileen said she made one pass with the tube onto her arm. Isn't the color gorgeous?

She sent some notes with her photos. She said, "This beautiful shade has a micro-fine gold shimmer that is stunning and makes the lips look lustrous. Everything I said about Kyoto Red is true for this one except for the finish. Whereas Kyoto Red was an opaque soft matte, A Plum Blossom is semi-sheer and glows without looking slick or sparkly. I wish I could capture the effect of seeing the lipstick as the light plays over it. From one angle it looks satin, but as I move my arm, it comes alive with a luminous glow.

She also described the difference between her swatch and the photos on Facebook. "There are a couple of pictures of Sunrise: A Plum Blossom on TATCHA's Facebook page - a day look and an evening look. The evening look that Makeup Artist Matthew VanLeeuwan created is deceptively cool because he used a dark mauve lip liner called Mauvelle by Lancôme. A Plum Blossom, isn't really that cool when worn on its own or when worn with a warmer pink or rose lip liner. Bottom line: This lustrous plum rose will look either cool or warm depending on how you wear it and what other lip liners you use with it. It's a bit of a chameleon."

According to TATCHA, they sold over half their stock the first day it was available on their site. That's impressive, given that the only picture of it was TATCHA's promo picture of the tube and bullet. From Eileen: "I have the feeling this is going to be another huge success for TATCHA, much like Kyoto Red." I totally agree with her.

Many thanks to Eileen! She's a champ! I'm grateful, as I'm sure you will be.

Guerlain Rouge G Exceptional Complete Lip Color in #60 Gabrielle

When Marcus Monson was here at Neiman Marcus, he choose Guerlain Rouge G Exceptional Complete Lip Color in #60 Gabrielle ($54) for me. I had told him to "do whatever he wanted" in our session. Ordinarily, when I look at a lipstick that looks light in the tube, I worry that it might might make me look like a would-be teen. I shouldn't have worried. His choice was perfect - absolutely beautiful on my lips.

This lipstick is reinvented in an exceptional jewel with Rouge G, a subtle balance of intense color and the comforting pleasure of a creamy lip balm. Behind this magical creation is an astounding formula: the unique combination of ruby powder for spectacular radiance, hyaluronic acid spheres for perfectly smoothed lips, and wild mango butter for lasting hydration. It leaves lips beautifully colored, perfectly smoothed, moisturized, and with a plumped look from the shine.

A truly exceptional palette, lip glamour comes in 20 colorful shades as luxurious as they are radiant. Tucked in a compact that marries beauty with high design, with one click, you will have a luminous lipstick and mirror at your fingertips. Designed by Lorenz Bäumer, the most talented jeweler from the Place Vendôme in Paris, it is the ultimate accessory of mystery and seduction.

The sun came out today just long enough for me to get a swatch photo. This color is semi-sheer and absolutely gorgeous. It's a warm pink on my arm and lips. I was thrilled with his choice, however, I hesitated because Rouge G Lipsticks are so heavy in my handbag. He had the perfect solution. He asked Moon to get a clear plastic, new tester top. It fit my lipstick perfectly so that I could carry it in my makeup bag. He is clearly a master!

I am thrilled with this color. When I started to write this feature, I saw that this shade is available at Guerlain counters, Sephora, but also at overstock.com and other interesting sources. I wonder if that means it is on its way to discontinuation.

    Chantecaille Spring 2016 Collection

If you've been reading Best Things in Beauty in prior seasons, you know I am a total Chantecaille devotee. I purchase just about everything the company introduces, and I wear Chantecaille makeup of one kind or another almost every day. I predict now that I'll need a backup of the new Le Magnolia Eye and Cheek Palette ($83, refillable) shown immediately below.

Chantecaille has created Le Magnolia Eye and Cheek Palette to increase awareness of TRAFFIC's work to improve the outlook for wild plant species and the livelihoods of people around the world through supporting the widespread adoption of the FairWild Standard. Embossed with a magnolia, this limited-edition complements the delicate watercolor hues seen on the 2016 runways. Five percent of the proceeds of each palette sold will be donated to TRAFFIC to support their wild plant conservation work.

The shades in the palette are Leaf, a unique, pale, pearly sage green that instantly brightens the eye area on the lid or lash line; Magnolia, a delicate and slightly iridescent pearl white; Bark, a semi-matte rich gentle brown to define and contour; and Wild, a fun, playful coral that adds a flush to the cheeks.

The Luster Glide Silk Infused Eye Liner ($34) is a perfect complement to the palette. It has a groundbreaking formula that captures the ultra-gliding, even application of a liquid liner in an easily controlled pencil that can be sharpened. You will want Earth, a deep espresso brown to wear with your Magnolia eye shadows.

Three Lip Chics ($36) round out the collection. Lip Chic is a lightweight, glossy lipstick that has a rich, soft texture with the shine and subtle plumping effects of a gloss. Available in three new shades for spring, the cushiony formula leaves lips feeling ultra-soft and looking shiny without any sticky feeling.

Gaia (was it named after The Non-Blonde?) is a soft, shimmering earthy caramel. Red Juniper is a classic and sophisticated berry red. Wild Poppy is a sheer, vibrant poppy red with a touch of coral. I must try Gaia as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Many thanks to Chantecaille for giving us this beautiful introduction. The Spring 2016 Collection will be available this month at Barney's New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Frederick Fekkai Salons, Neiman Marcus, Space NK, select Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's locations. You can already purchase it at Chantecaille's Web site.

The Friday Forum - February 5

I know this looks like a Christmas post, but I wanted to talk about the value of planing holly trees. Not only do they provide shelter for birds, they provide food. This year, when our birds couldn't get through the snow to smaller plants, they cleaned out the holly berries. I planted a whole border of hollies when I moved in here, and I also planted a Foster Holly on the southern side of my house. Those berries are prized by robins and migrating cedar waxwings. If you need a tree that provides beauty for you and food and lodging for animals, please plant hollies.

This week, I wasn't able to write as often as I would have liked. I spent an entire day on Mom's doctor visits and lab work. Then the next day it rained. I got pretty wet picking up her prescriptions, and, of course, I couldn't take photos. I was able to post yesterday, the day I went over to Neiman Marcus to teach a friend how to use Instagram. Today, we have very cold sunshine. I hope to get some photos shortly.

I also had a couple of preliminary job interviews by phone and hope one comes through. I am ready to go back to work. Charlie will be lonesome, though. I wish I could work at home.

I was able to see and test some new items. I must tell you about Le Métier de Beauté's new skin care, introduced in time for Neiman Marcus' Beauty Event. The tote this year comes in gold and orange. Although I'm not an "orange person," I'd love to have the orange one. It looks like Hermès.

Chanel has a gorgeous new line of slim lipsticks. I must also feature them. There's one shade that's perfect for me. I'm told that the Dior items have blown out of the store. As usual, Dior sent only three of each SKU. How do they expect to sell makeup to women who want to try before they buy? I just don't get it.

Speaking of Le Métier de Beauté, they have a fabulous Kaleidoscope that will be a gift with a $350 purchase for women. I have an in-store photo, but I'd rather freeze and go outside to get proper photos.

FeedBlitz has been having trouble with its e-mail notifications. I don't think you saw my post yesterday on TATCHA's new lipstick unless you were browsing. They say they are back to normal now, so I hope you will see my "new post" notice today. You may be notified of two features. I have to photos from Chantecaille's Spring 2016 Collection, and I'll be writing it up shortly. Save your spring beauty money!

I hope you are ready to share.

    I'll be back soon.
