The Friday Forum - July 15 Plus Chanel for Fall 2016

Before I "talk" about Chanel, I want to express my tearful horror at what one man did in Nice last night. On an occasion when the French were celebrating a national holiday, he purposely killed 84 people (I'm sure that number will rise, given the number of critically injured in hospitals). Will the police find some screed - some written explanation for his actions, or will ISIS claim responsibility? I have watched television since I arose at 5:30, and I've cried for every man, woman, and child killed or injured by an evil person. How can the civilized world stop such violence?

Chanel, one of our very favorite beauty companies, French to the core, introduced its Le Rouge Collection N°1 for Fall 2016 yesterday only on its Web site. It was an early surprise. I wasn't expecting it until the end of July. Last weekend, I had taken photos of some of the items in the Neiman Marcus Café. If you click on the photo above, you may be able to read them. They are from left to right: Rouge Audace Rouge Allure Velvet deep chocolate burgundy; Rouge Ingénue Rouge Allure dusty beige; Rouge Vie Rouge Allure Velvet deep rosebud; Rouge Tentation Rouge Allure intense red; Rouge Charnel Rouge Allure Velvet fire red; the unknown lab sample I will have to identify through the account executive who has been wearing it; and Rouge Feu Rouge Allure Velvet lumimous orange.

I know you can enlarge and read the Illusion d'Ombre Velvet in Rouge Contraste (called Rouge Diable on my product sheet). It's a very deep, dark, red-tinged chocolate brown.

The top eye pencils shown below are Eros and Agapé. I probably have the blush photo at home (I am at work now), and I will add it to this forum later today. I swatched Eros; it's really red. I had hoped it would be copper.

The collection is not for everyone. There are a few pieces I'd love to have, but it's a bit edgy for me. "Reinterpreted by Lucia Pica, red upsets the codes. Through the depth of a nail polish, the frankness of a lipstick, and the intensity of an eye shadow, makeup gives women a new power." I've seen upcoming collections, and I'll be saving my money for them.

It's time for the Friday Forum. The Friday Forum has always been an opportunity to share information. Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Tell us about it! Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Tell us why! Do you have questions others might be able to answer? We can help! Want to talk about skin care? I'm game. Just use the comments. We have busy weekends and slow ones on the forum. I hope to see you in the comments.

A note to e-mail subscribers - If you do not wish to receive a daily e-mail from the blog, you can switch to weekly. Every so often, someone unsubscribes saying they receive too many e-mails from Best Things in Beauty. At the bottom of each e-mail, there is a link to change your preferences.

  1. Hello, Cg! As I mentioned before here, I bought almost the entire collection. Now, thanks to your photos, I may ante up for the rest! God Bless my wonderful husband who can't wait to have me order! What happened in Nice is horrible. But the real horror is that it continues. My frustration and outrage concern why the nations of the world do not stop this. I recall the young Jordanian pilot who was captured & burned alive by ISIS. Jordan was outraged, did a few sorties, but that was it. Do these nations expect the US alone to assume responsibility for taking out this group? My own profession is as a criminal defense lawyer. This past Monday, about 50 miles from where I concentrate my practice, an inmate being led from court got ahold of a deputy's side arm & wounded the deputy & killed 2 bailiffs. Only 50 miles from me. I blame this not on ISIS, but on poor security protocol. The inmate was cuffed but not in belly chains. Carelessness, hate, they surround us. The day after this, in my own venue, I had to calm down a court house situation that could have, would have, ended badly. That was a situation where the message was reasonable, but not conveyed properly. So is it any wonder I find joy in makeup? My friend who is a CHANEL devotee calls these situations lipstick days. We need lipstick means let's order something wonderful. Hence, my trigger finger for ordering CHANEL! We must have these wonderful, pretty things to look forward to. And then I glam up with them to go work out--hard--at the gym. Makeup & the gym keep me sane! A good weekend to all!

  2. Nemo, they have identified the terrorist: Mohamed Lagouaiej Bouhlel.

I read all about the murder of the bailiffs. I was horrified that he was only in front cuffs.

I don't think other countries expect the U.S. to solve terrorism alone. The problem is that no one knows how to stop it. Forever. You kill those crazies and others pop up.

  4. I'm excited about Chanel's fall collection. I love red and I think the colors are going to be extremely flattering to my skin tone. I'll probably get almost the entire collection except for the orange red and beige lipsticks. I'm going to London in a few weeks and I have to admit I'm concerned. I don't think the west takes security as seriously as they should. I went to India a few months ago and all the mall, movie theaters, train stations and hotels all had a heavily armed security presence. They would pat you down, go through your bags and have you go through a metal detector. I work at a prosecutor at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and I feel that the criminals have gotten more blatant and I don't necessarily think stricter gun control laws will alleviate the situation as the criminals will always find a way to obtain guns and other weapons.

  5. Anahita, one thing I tweeted this morning: How did a big truck get anywhere near the promenade? They say it was barricaded, but how well?

  6. Those poor bailiffs. It's so easy to see what went wrong, but it is much more difficult to know why. Complacency? The attitude that such horror can not happen here (wherever that "here" might be)? People who have become desensitized to violence? Misplaced confidence? Rampant disrespect for the police and our justice system? The ills are deep and complex.

As for Chanel, I love the quad, but will probably give everything else a miss. Although I can replicate the looks I have in mind by using an assortment of products already in my stash, it's nice to have everything in one palette. Eyeshadows that are more matte in finish seem to be gaining some traction. Based on promo pictures, Guerlain's new eyeshadow palettes seem to offer several neutral, more matte, shades. Guerlain knows how to do mattes which border on satin in finish. I would also like to see Clé de Peau come out with something. The spring they released those two satin-matte eyeshadow quads, I was in heaven. I don't like a full on matte because it looks chalky on my skin, but a demi-matte looks so fresh and modern.

Despite the terribly sad news coming out of France, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. And, Clarissa, thank you for checking in. My aunt, who lives in Brittany, also checked in to say that when the news broke, the revelers were all told to go home. She said it's been a time filled with grief rather than celebration. So sad!

  7. Flags at all U.S. Government buildings are being flown at half staff in honor of the victims in Nice.

  8. Eileen, the shootings near me occurred because of a poor protocol and complacency I think. The inmate was a frequent flier in the system. Even though he was charged with capital crimes, they did not think he was a threat because they knew him. Michigan's lousy governor should demand the promulgation of legislation mandating all inmates charged with capital offenses, or those with violent offenses, be transported in the works: cuffs, belly chains and leg shackles. Good news, ladies: my first CHANEL order has shipped. I just ordered the second go-round today after reading this blog.

  10. Hi Charleston Girl! Going to the Chanel counter used to be quick, easy and fun for me. All my favorites are mostly discontinued and I feel quite pressured with new releases because I live in a small city and each counter only gets a few items. It is so nice to hear people excited about this collection and, I hope they enjoy wearing it. I like to wear a very sheer, glossy, muted red lip when I wear red sometimes. I have deep set eyes and I prefer to wear a sparkly shade on the lid, liner, mascara and a bit of highlight. I'm probably the only person who left Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale with absolutely nothing. "My" local store is small so many items would have to be ordered and I find returning items so inconvenient with my busy schedule. So far, YSL looks like they'll have a few interesting products. I'd like to try their new "vinyl glossy stains" and see their "nude and rosy eye contouring palettes". I found a nice sales associate who sent me some pictures of Chantecaille's Fall. From, the pictures it looks lovely. I'm also looking at Clarins and Bobbi Brown. I tend to like a shimmery taupe-y eye and light peachy lips with a sparkle. I was on Charlotte Tilbury's website and appreciated how she coordinates colors and has numerous images and videos of everything. However, I very much agree with a certain lovely subscriber on here with her comments from a past posting. I ordered one of her new Hot Lips shades. After looking at 2 million reviews and images, I'm hopeful in that it works! Finding light color lip shades is difficult for me. Also, I will be picking up the Marc Jacobs blush that you reviewed n txt week. It will be at my local Sephora! Just when I thought , oh no what will I do without Chanel? I noticed not too much hype with Tom Ford Fall? I guess only lipsticks, fragrance and powders? Xoxoxo to you!! p.s. I heard Nordstrom only has two counters for Burberry. The Anniversary items are nice and a makeup bag with the plaid.

  11. What was Martin Luther King's saying? "If we don't learn to live in peace we will die as fools!" Thank you CG for your blog. I LOVE learning from you. May I share my deepest sympathy with you at the loss of your mom. Death may take a life but does not end a relationship.May you continue in her beautiful spirit.

  13. Wendy, you should deal with Nicki at Mazza. They get great stock, and if you send her a selfie, she can help you. 202-966-9700.

I haven't seen anything "to die for" at Nordies.

  15. Hi Charlestongirl,

At the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, I picked up several Antica Farmacista reed diffusers (enough to last me until the winter sale) and some new bras. That's it. I did make a few other purchases when I was there, but they were regular merchandise; not sale items. The sale did seem rather lack-luster to me this year but that could be because the beauty specials just didn't suit me or they duplicated things I already own. Poor me! LOL. That just leaves me with more money to spend when the fall collections start arriving :-) There might not have been much there to entice me, but I did notice loads of young women scooping up the MAC and NARS kits.

    Hi Nemo,

Thanks for that insider glimps at what happened and I think your analyses is spot on. Have a great weekend and enjoy your Chanel beauties when they arrive.

  16. Hi, Charleston Girl! It's the pest. I am fascinated by that unnamed mystery lipstick in your photo, the color the CHANEL account executive was wearing. I can't think of anything else!!! Please obtain the name of that lipstick and whether it is available--or when! Thanks!

  17. Eileen, I'm actually glad Nordstrom doesn't excite me this year. I've only got two weeks left on my consulting job, so it's best that I don't spend a lot of money. I do have to check out my favorite AGL shoes, though.
