Clé de Peau Beauté Palette de Voyage for Holiday 2012

Clé de Peau has introduced a stunning makeup palette just in time for the holidays. The limited-edition Palette de Voyage ($180) stopped me in my tracks at Neiman Marcus.

A daring voyage. An escape from the everyday. A chance to explore. An exciting opportunity - perhaps a chance to discover unknown facets of your beauty. Embark upon a voyage inspired by this season's makeup and be transported by all the wondrous types of beauty there are.

Despite a cadence that reminds me of Brad Pitt's Chanel N°5 advertisements, the makeup speaks for itself. The color selections are festive, yet perfect for everyday.

The palette, which was created especially for Holiday 2012, contains the following goodies, all packed in an elegant, snap-shut dark blue case.
  • A new Eye Shadow Quad
  • The Mascara deluxe sample
  • Extra-Rich Lipstick in R5
  • Cheek Color #3
  • Powder Eyeliner & Eyebrow Powders
  • Three applicators
I swatched the palette in batches in late-afternoon sun. I had to dash up to my neighbor's house because my own garden was shaded after the sun had dipped below the tree line.

I started with the gorgeous new eye quad. Introduced for this palette, it's as pretty as it gets. I swatched the quad shades left to right. Then I swatched the brow and eyeliner powders, which are shown at the bottom of my arm.

The gold is a beautiful shade with a stunning sheen. The peachy pink? A shade Clé de Peau has mastered before and presents in glamorous fashion in this palette. The chocolate bronze? Exquisite. One of my favorite shades, the golden beige, is one of the smallest helpings in the palette. I want more of it!

The brow shader is a fabulous shade for me. Because it's a powder, it's easy to apply only where needed, while controlling the depth of color. The eyeliner at the bottom of my arm is a fabulous shade when you don't want black, and it complements the colors in the eye shadow quad perfectly.

In my second batch of photos, I swatched the Cheek Color #3 and the Extra-Rich Lipstick in #5. The photos were taken at the same time of day - late.

The beautiful blush at the top of my arm is a pink-peach blend that should be perfect for almost everyone. It offers a sophisticated sheen that makes the color lively. The pretty red lipstick is the color of the season. Not too blue, not too warm, it's a holiday red that will thrill red lipstick lovers.

The mascara is black - as expected. The applicators? You'll want to use your own unless you are traveling - and this all-in-one set is a perfect take-along.Don't miss that cute little bow that's included separately in the box. It makes a tailored box feminine.

I know Palette de Voyage is pricey. When you add up the price of a Clé de Peau Beauté eye shadow quad, blush, lipstick (remember this one is not full-sized), and deluxe sample mascara, along with brow and liner powers, I think it's a justifiable price. I suspect I'll use the eye shadows and blush most often. I'd call this palette absolutely perfect if Clé de Peau had included a lip gloss.

Coming Attraction: Le Métier de Beauté Bauhaus Kaleidoscope Eye Kit for Holiday 2012

Yippee! I finally got my hands on a photo of Le Métier de Beauté's Bauhaus Kaleidoscope Eye Kit ($95) for Holiday 2012, and I think it looks beautiful. I know little about it - other than the fact that it will be available (in stores and online) at Neiman Marcus. I am not sure whether it will be exclusive to Neiman Marcus. Since the Bauhaus Kaleidoscope Lip Kit is a Neiman Marcus exclusive (you can pre-order it online now), I assume the eye kit will be exclusive also.

The dark and light silvers should play well with the peachy pink and beige shades, giving us many options.

I believe the Bauhaus Kaleidoscope Eye Kit for Holiday 2012 will be available in late November. Don't quote me on that, please. I've received very little concrete information.  What I do know is that Michael Reinhard can take your pre-order. Give him a call at (202) 966-9700, extension 2258 or 2236, to order.

Chantecaille Lip Chic in Nocturne from Les Fêtes Collection for Holiday 2012

The last piece I have to show you from Chantecaile's Les Fêtes Holiday 2012 Color Collection is Lip Chic ($35) in Nocturne. Chantecaille's Lip Chic is a best-selling, highly emollient lip formula that offers the even coverage of a lipstick with the high shine and plumping effects of a gloss. Added collagen gives the lips a boost, leaving them fuller and with a decidedly more youthful appearance, without any irritation. Lip Chic is one of my favorite lipsticks. I wouldn't leave home without one. I've purchased a large percentage of the shades so I have one for every occasion.

Nocturne is one of those colors that surprises you. It looks cherry red in the tube. Right? Check out the swatches below and see one of the prettiest pinks you can imagine. I purchased it at Neiman Marcus and ran out the door without even trying it. Friday was a crazy busy day.I got home and found it was even more gorgeous than I expected.

I took my photos in full sun at the same time I photographed Brilliant Gloss in Glamour. I had expected a similar shade - particularly from the online swatch - but was thrilled with Nocturne. It's my kind of color. What did I do? I quickly went online and ordered more.

Just look this color! It's festive pink. On the warm side, it's a shade that will make many of us very happy - and look fabulous.

Since it's a holiday shade, it had to be photographed in front of a holly tree laden with berries. The top swatch photo shows the true color on the skin. The photo directly above shows how it will shine in strong lighting.

FacechartOn Chantecaille's Web site, Olivia's look for the lips was created by applying Nocturne Lip Chic directly to the lips, starting in the middle and working the color outward. Then, her lips were shaped with Impression Lip Definer, drawing from the edges inward. Her lips were finished with a liberal application of Glamour Lip Gloss for added shine. That's why they look so much darker than Nocturne.

The result? One of the prettiest lips for holiday I've seen so far.

Right now, you can purchase all pieces from Les Fêtes Holiday 2012 Color Collection, including Nocturne, at Chantecaille's Web site and Chantecaille counters where the holiday collection has arrived (call first before you leave home). I purchased mine at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie, where you can call Jeannine Barnes, Chantecaille representative, at (202) 966-9700, extension 2289, for help. The collection is available in store and online at other Chantecialle retailers, such as Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's. This collection is definitely worth a look.

IT Cosmetics Vitality Lip Flush

IT Cosmetics' Vitality Lip Flush 4-in-1 Natural Anti-Aging Lipstick Stains take the place of four products; your lipstick, anti-aging conditioning lip balm, ultra-hydrating lip gloss, and lip stain all in one.

This innovative, all-natural formula contains IT Cosmetics Hydra-Luxe Technology, which includes ingredients such as plum oil, cherry oil, shea butter, aloe, and jojoba - all working together to treat, hydrate, condition, and nourish your lips and minimize the appearance of lip lines and wrinkles. Plus Vitality Lip Flush is packed with anti-aging antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E; açaí; and green and white tea to protect the lips and ward off free radicals all day long.

I was the lucky recipient of two shades that IT sent me to try: Je Ne Sais Quoi and Love Story. Love Story is shown at the top of this feature.

When I first opened Je Ne Said Quoi, my first thought was, "Oh, nice lip balm in a pretty case (love the pink)." It looked colorless, so I was surprised to see that it actually carries a very slight pink color. I took my swatch photo in full sun, and you can definitely see the baby pink. I was surprised by how good it feels on my lips the moment I applied it.

Then I tried Love Story, shown at my house below. Love Story appeared to be a warm pink in the tube. It was later in the day (late-afternoon sunshine) when I photographed Love Story. Sorry about the shadows. That's when I learned that it's a brilliant medium pink with just a hint of warmth.

Love Story does carry much more pigment than Je Ne Sais Quoi, and the most amazing thing is that the color on my lips is amazingly long-lasting. I assume that's why it's called a stain. I would never have expected the long-lasting color from a product that looks and feels like balm.

I'm just as enamored with IT Cosmetics as I was when I tried Vitality Cheek Stain. I have a new dual-duty lip balm/lip color in my purse, and her name is Love Story.

As I mentioned last week, I'm always excited to discover a new-to-me brand - one that knocks me off my feet. IT Cosmetics did that. Even better, their Friends & Family sale runs through Monday, November 19. You can take 25% off your purchase. I'll be shopping. Right now, Vitality Lip Flush costs only $15.

One of you will win eclectic, must-have, limited-edition kit that features a hand-picked assortment of Sephora’s bestselling products, including five full-sized items. From mascara to eyeliner, fragrance to blush, this kit for any makeup junkie or beauty newcomer is valued at more than $186. How can you enter to win this giveaway contest (technically a sweepstakes)? Just leave a comment on this feature (not in another BTiB post). After you comment here, feel free to send me an e-mail at bestthingsinbeautycontests@gmail.com (the contest address, not my "personal" e-mail) and identify your comment. You can never be too careful about sharing an e-mail address you care about on a blog, so feel free to follow this step (an alternative is to code your e-mail, e.g., myname at gmail dot com, in your comment). Please make sure I have your e-mail. If I can't notify you, you can't win - even if your number is drawn. I can't believe the number of winners I haven't been able to find in the past.

You can earn extra entries. Follow this blog (through an e-mail subscription, GFC, or though one of the many Google readers - see sidebar at right) to earn a second entry. If you are a follower, it would help me tally entries if you tell me in your comment how you follow. You don't have to follow to enter. I want everyone to have a chance, but I also want to reward my followers. I must be able to track this entry.

You can earn a third entry by tweeting this contest. You must include "@BTiBeauty" (without the quotes) and the contest title in your tweet. Remember, tweet the contest title - if you don't, that entry won't count. I will tweet the contest early this evening, and you can simply retweet it to earn that second entry - if that's easier.

The deadline for entries will be Saturday, November 24, at midnight. The next morning, I will use a random number generator (random.org) to select the winner. I will e-mail the winner on Sunday morning. The winner will have 48 hours to reply to my message and provide a shipping address. After 48 hours, the prize will be forfeited, and another winner will be selected. Make sure to check your e-mail - and look in your spam folder - when the contest ends.

This contest is open to anyone anywhere. Here are the terms. I will carefully pack and ship the prize (as I always do). I cannot insure the prize for overseas shipment - it's amazingly expensive to do so because of the way I have to send insured mail. If it's lost or stolen in transit, I may not be able to replace it with another prize just like it. I'll do my best on this end; let's see if your mail service does right by you on the other end if we have an overseas winner.

The winner must be able to provide me with a "mailable address," meaning the U.S. Post Office recognizes it or its street, province, and other "elements" the way the winner provides them. I've had some trouble with both U.S. and international addresses lately.

For all the legalese related to this contest, please see the Contests/Sweepstakes page at the top of the blog. Good luck!

Sunday This and That

Oh my, this week's conversation has been all about adultery, and it's not pretty. I've been party to several conversations among friends - all married and all speaking with ambivalence - but all wondering why a woman would let her looks go south when she's married to a good-looking, powerful man. Powerful people are always magnets for the opposite sex.

Dr. Tammy Nelson (well-known relationship expert) wrote in the Huffington Post, "President Clinton, former Senator John Edwards, Eliot Spitzer, former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and now the retired four-star general are all examples of men in power who publicly cheated on their spouses. And they stand in 'formation' along with the rest of us; more than 55% percent of Americans will cheat on their spouses at some point in their marriages."

Forget for a moment all the basics, like marriage vows, morality, the Bible, and basic decency. Just look at why the General might have strayed. That's been the gist of the conversations - along with sympathy for the whole family, especially the kids.

Holly Petraeus is shown in the top two photos above. Click on the photos to enlarge them if you can't see that she looks older than her 59 years. The comments? Her salt and pepper hair does not work for her, and her hair style is unstyled. The bronze-toned, old-fashioned glasses do not flatter her. She's overweight and has bad skin. The clothing? Matronly.

Now, here's a photo of the Petraeus family in the past. Doesn't she look darling? Her brown hair is flattering. A smile speaks a thousand words about this beautiful family.

Now, imagine the temptation. This gorgeous woman, Paula Broadwell, aged 40, the General's biographer, enjoyed tremendous access to him during the year they spent together in Afghanistan. With one blemish in this official photo above (which someone should have had Photoshopped), she's beautiful. She is dressed conservatively, and despite the similarity to the outfit worn above by Mrs. Petraeus, she looks great. Makeup, simple jewelry, and a gorgeous face. We're told she's brilliant. Brilliant men are often attracted to brilliant women. Oh, and some are attracted to bimbos. She's married too and the mother of two young children.

Here she is looking a bit more provocative. As his biographer, she spent a lot of time with the General. However and whenever it happened, they apparently fell in love (or lust). Why is anyone surprised? That's what my girlfriends are asking.

Their point has been that as we age, we need to remember that looking good is important. We have to work harder to take care of ourselves - whether married or not. There's plenty of research that shows that looks matter. I wonder if the General would have strayed if Mrs. Petraeus had tried to remain attractive - for him as well as herself.

I'm asking for comment because this story is all about beauty. Sordid? Yes. Controversial? Yes. If you try for a moment to forget your values, which is really hard to do, do you think what happened is related to beauty? I think it is. Dr. Nelson's analysis is a lot more primal.

As for the "socialite" below, she's where the story gets bizarre. The General should have been more careful about the company he kept.

Update 11/24: All comments about this feature are now being deleted. All of them. They do not belong in features about hair products or makeup. Whether the comments calling me names are from the same person (all anonymous, of course) or many, whether they are pro or con, they are getting old. For those of you still unrealistically clinging to your belief that the issue wasn't news, just Google Holly Petraeus Beauty.

A DOZEN ROSES Holiday Collector's Set

I receive many press releases about holiday gift sets and can publish only a few. The A DOZEN ROSES Holiday Collector's Set ($85) caught my eye because I love my A DOZEN ROSES fragrances. It has a catchy tag line, "Wear Your Passion."

The set contains four 8.5 ml rollerballs of four A DOZEN ROSES fragrances. All four fragrances contain A DOZEN ROSES' signature rose absolute blended with other intoxicating notes.
  • Gold Rush - one of my favorites, "the sexy scent with blackberry, neroli, and bittersweet chocolate
  • Iced White - another favorite that I somehow failed to purchase (cannot have everything I want), "the cool scent with white peony, white primrose, and white musk"
  • Shakespeare in Love - another beauty, "the romantic scent with jasmine, gardenia, ylang ylang, and fresh pear"
  • Electron - another one I purchased, "the shocking scent with green tea, violet, cattleya orchid, and neon musk"
I'm sure you can purchase this gorgeous collection at Neiman Marcus. How you could part with it is another story.
