Friday the 13th, and the Satsuki azaleas are blooming. It's sucn a pretty time of year. We have been drenched this week, so the azaleas aren't terribly happy. Later today, the last storm is predicted to move through, bringing a "cold front" that will take the humidity out of the air. I'm expecting a great weekend for everyone celebrating Father's Day.
You could have knocked me over with a feather when I learned that Kilian Hennessey is introducing scented jewelry. I've always been underwhelmed with the concept, although I've never been underwhelmed by Kilian. WWD quoted Kilian as saying, "We are living in a world where things that are invisible don’t exist,” referring to the plethora of images on everything from Instagram and Pinterest to Facebook. “Perfume is an accessory in the same way shoes and handbags are. But it’s an accessory that is not visible.”
Now, he will be providing visible fragrance. The Jewels of l’Oeuvre Noire, a capsule line of four necklaces for women, each one coming in 18-karat-gold plate and pure rhodium. There’s an onyx bead tassel necklace (whose cord is microencapsulated with one of six By Kilian scents), plus two other tasseled models and one with a locket. Each involves a cage system made of perforated metal that holds a ceramic piece onto which fragrance can be applied.
The Leathers of l’Oeuvre Noire are four bracelets - in a selection of five scents - for men in either brown-and-gold or black-and-silver finishes. Their fragrance is said to last up to one year. Hennessy designed them all. Tassels have appeared on the snazzy By Kilian fragrance boxes, and the metal shield design is on some of the jewelry, as well. “It’s always essential shapes,” he said.
Prices for the women’s line range from $245 for the locket necklace to $465 for the onyx piece. The bracelets run from $195 to $325. The jewelry is set to launch Sunday in the By Kilian boutiques in New York, and Moscow, plus online through bykilian.com. Its rollout will include London’s Harrods and Bergdorf Goodman in September and the upcoming Kilian boutiques in Paris; Lugano, Switzerland; Doha, Qatar; Seoul, and Dubai through year end. Will you be shopping?
It's time for the Friday Forum. I love this part of our week. What new products did you discover this week? Did you find any deals you couldn't resist? Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Do you have a question others might be able to answer? Want to talk about skin care? What's new in your life? Just use the comments. Don't be shy. Just make sure to ask any question you might have over the weekend. By early the next week, most (not all) readers will have moved on.

Coming Attraction: By Kilian In the Garden of Good and Evil Collection
For Kilian, an olfactive harmony always begins with a story. In this new collection, it is the myth of original sin, which is found at the heart of the narrative - a classical theme with interpretations punctuate art in all of its forms.
Here, the world of perfume enters into the Garden of Eden and shows us another side of the story, leading us away from the well-known representations and allowing us to understand it by breathing in its delights. Instantaneously, we traverse the ages from genesis to the 21st century. We have only to close our eyes and all of the symbols of original sin rush in, attacking our senses. One by one, the coiled serpent appears, the apple is revealed, and the garden materializes before our very eyes.
Kilian as creator - but also as narrator, producer, and director. This is without a doubt one of his most surprising collections, but one that nevertheless remains faithful to the codes that typify the Kilian scents, reinforcing the integrity of the brand. We recognize a profound ambiguity as the leitmotiv of this collection - seemingly “angelic” at first blush and then revealing itself to be quite the opposite. Once more, Kilian leads us somewhere we didn’t expect. Rather than taking us again into the icy blackness of the preceding collections, we discover a garden, one in which the air is perfumed with unspeakable dangers. An immaculate whiteness, the symbol of innocence and purity, is held out against the brilliance and opulence of gold - the mark of riches, but also of vanity. The sin of pride, carnal sin, the unanticipated scrutiny of our most unconfessed and shameful desires - all manifest themselves in the hidden and not-so-hidden corners of this new collection.
A collection as a promise of forbidden pleasure, a collection that invites us to succumb to our most secret desires, breaking through time back to the entrance in the Garden of Eden. An entrance that begins by a rendezvous in the City of Sin, the beginning of a forbidden passage, the place of shadowy sensory delights that tantalizes and seduces us in the Kilian collections.
IN THE CITY OF SIN is the opening face of the collection. IN THE CITY OF SIN is a place of extreme temptation where every street corner offers the possibility of impromptu encounters and seductions. IN THE CITY OF SIN embodies the temptation that leads to carnal desire. IN THE CITY OF SIN is a rich composition of fruits and spices, flowers and woods in which the essence of fruit liquefies and melts onto the heady woods. This fragrance opens with an explosion of bergamot from Calabria and pink peppercorns and cardamom from Guatamala. The perfume then evolves into a heart of apricots and caramelized plums held in check by a Turkish rose absolute. A light haze of Indonesian incense entrances and then lends a profound depth, further sustained by atlas and Virginia cedar woods and rich Indonesian patchouli. [Please, Kilian, don't let the patchouli be dominant on dry-down. I've been waiting for this collection!] IN THE CITY OF SIN, when the door opens onto a universe without limits, the quest for ecstasy is launched. The perfumer was Calice Becker.
GOOD GIRL GONE BAD typifies a special sort of woman. A perfume that represents a kind of voluptuousness beloved by Kilian: sensual and unrestrained. A woman who is game for anything in the world of love, of desire, of naughtiness. GOOD GIRL GONE BAD is a composition of fruits and flowers, a perfume as bewitching as bursts of laughter, a barrier moved beyond, a forgotten prohibition. GOOD GIRL GONE BAD opens with the fresh innocence of the petals of jasmin sambac and the apricot sweetness of Chinese osmanthus. That feminine ideal does not continue to fool anyone for long. Letting go of their demure appearances, the flowers toss off their inhibitions and reveal the other, decadent side of themselves. The Rose of May gives off its honeyed heat. The Indian tuberose nakedly exhibits its milky roundness, while the narcotic sensuality of Egyptian narcissus surges forth, uncontrollable and deliciously haunting. Notes of Virginia cedar and amber open up and try to assert their dominant character in order to contain that outpouring of opulence, but they never succeed in taming it completely. The tension is palpable; the addiction exacerbated; the pleasure consummated. GOOD GIRL GONE BAD, when the woman becomes a temptress, a sinner - when she dares and when she proves her audacity. The perfumer was Alberto Morillas. [After reading the notes, I am so there. Maybe not quite as daring as the actual good girl gone bad, but it sounds luscious.]
FORBIDDEN GAMES, literally. FORBIDDEN GAMES embodies the spirit of a temptation that leads to total abandon. FORBIDDEN GAMES is a composition of fruits and spices, flowers and amber, a nectar of fruits prohibited to mortals. FORBIDDEN GAMES opens on a potpourri of fruits: apple, peach, and plum, spiced by cinnamon bark from Laos. Then the perfume advances into a lush, exuberant floral heart with notes of Bulgarian rose orpur, geranium bourbon, and midnight jasmine before disappearing slowly into a sweet confection of Madagascar vanilla, Laotian honey, and the spellbinding resinous oil of opoponax. FORBIDDEN GAMES: when going beyond the boundaries has never been so exciting. The perfumer was Calice Becker. [Steady my heart!]
Each fragrance is presented in a jeweled coffret with accents of danger. Inspired throughout his lifetime by the Art Deco movement, Kilian revisits what was formerly a symbol of emancipation: the cigarette case. The pure lines of this case recall the spirit of the very first Van Cleef and Arpels minaudières - named in honor of the founder’s wife Estelle - and also their irresistible coquettishness. A case that is sui generis, yet fully in accord with the demand for simplicity which echoed the changes in the manners and style of the 1920s.
The unique Kilian touch is found in the play of opposition between white and gold, between straight and curved lines, between the excess and yet the sobriety of the whole. The white as a symbol of purity and innocence, of paradise and infinity, which emphasizes the contrast with the gold, an aristocratic material that signifies opulence and riches. In the symbolism, the struggle of contending values between naiveté on the one side and transgression on the other. The door is opened into Eden, humanity’s original paradise, but without the possibility of resisting temptation. According to the myth, that temptation is incarnated in the serpent which makes its appearance on the Kilian coffret, luxurious and sensual like a precious jewel.
We hold the jewel case in our hands as though holding a mirror of ourselves and our phantasmal illusions. But are they only illusions? A flacon of eternity, the flacon “In the Garden of Good and Evil” is exceptional for its representation of the spirit of the collection. Engraved on its various sides is a fresco that blends at once, with precision and audacity, the actors found in the collection: the twosome intermingled with the serpent, the door, the apple, and the grapevine. With its symbolism and the marriage of white against the gold, the flacon has been transformed into a precious object, one that possesses and lays claim to an aura of the eternal divine.
The duo with serpent - the intertwining represents the embodiment of the naïve couple in their fall. The symbol of a temptation assumed and shared by two consenting beings. The door - the door of paradise, which in the By Kilian universe, opens the way toward infinite possibilities. The apple - associated directly for many centuries with the original sin that occurred when Adam and Eve shared a bite of this forbidden fruit. What constituted that sin remains ambiguous - sometimes described as simply prohibited knowledge, sometimes decried as the consummation of the sexual act. The apple as symbolic fruit that undergirds the olfactive web of this collection, woven more widely around the theme of prohibited fruits of all kinds. The grapevine - divine plant of the same genre as the olive tree and the oak, it embodies all of the symbols of life. In ancient mythology, it was also the attribute of the god Dionysius, god of excess and of intoxication. It was the tree that provided the Dionysian gift of vine - offering refreshment, ecstasy, and truth. A gift which is revealed as even more precious in the quest of forbidden games.
Fragrance lovers, rejoice! This collection will expand Kilian's range and vision, which is already remarkable in its elegance. You know what I'll be purchasing in November! You can find By Kilian fragrances at Saks Fifth Avenue. I will publish a full list of sources when I review these new eau de parfums. They will be priced at $245 each.

By Kilian Asian Tales Giveaway Contest Winners
I've been posting contest winners on the sidebar for many months. Today, with 10 winners, there isn't enough room to devote to the list. I've never had a contest with 10 winners before. We had 96 entries after I counted all the various forms of entry.
It was fun tabulating. I will admit that some of you with multiple entries won twice, so I had to make an executive decision that each winner would receive only one sample set. I hope everyone is OK with spreading the joy.
Here are our winners. I have not had time to e-mail each and every one of you (to get your mailing addresses), but I'll do that next. I know it's confusing when individuals share a name.
Congratulations! I have a feeling these fragrances will be traveling far and wide.
Now, I'm off to write e-mails.

By Kilian Asian Tales Giveaway Contest - Water Calligraphy and Bamboo Harmony
Thanks to the wonderful and generous Mindy Yang at MiN New York Apothecary & Atelier, an amazing emporium of niche fragrances and a gathering place for perfume lovers, I have 10 sample sets of By Kilian's new Asian Tales fragrances to give away to Best Things in Beauty readers! I featured Kilian Hennessy earlier this week, and I told you about his two latest introductions, Water Calligraphy and Bamboo Harmony - both of which I adore. Spray samples of both fragrances are enclosed in these fold-out stories.
Kilian Hennessy's newest collection, Asian Tales, was first conceived as a spiritual journey, with significance and relevance behind the meanings of symbols and words. All of his collections have a narrative. As the first two creations in Asian Tales, Water Calligraphy and Bamboo Harmony, took shape,"every detail was placed with careful attention and with the intent to pay homage to this great [Asian] culture.”
Kilian confirmed for me that both fragrances were developed to appeal to an Asian aesthetic that includes a preference for light fragrances. Those who want their fragrances to announce their presence in a room and leave a trail behind them probably won't like the new By Kilian scents. I love them! I appreciate a light, perfectly crafted harmony of notes that's personal. I don't want others to smell me from four feet away. I'm looking for a more intimate connection with fragrance. I want to enjoy it, and I'm happy if anyone within a few feet of me can enjoy it. I may overuse the term "office-friendly," but Water Calligraphy and Bamboo Harmony are office-friendly.
Water Calligraphy Eau de Parfum ($225) is an "olfactive impression of an aquatic flower sitting next to a pond of water lilies...a moment of delicacy. A harmonious duo of sparking grapefruit zest and reseda blossom underlined by dewy water lily awaken the senses. In the heart, the majestic jasmine sambac enhances the evanescent magnolia, giving an impression of quiet water sliding over cardamon and vetiver, like Chinese ink slides on rice paper."
Bamboo Harmony Eau de Parfum ($225) wears an aura of subtle sips of white tea taken in the heart of a bamboo grove, "a moment of spirituality." "Bamboo Harmony opens with luminous notes of bergamot, bigarade, and neroli. It evolves through a comforting heart combining white tea leaves and mimosa, highlighted with a very light touch of spices. The character of the trail is given a rare mate essence interlaced with sensual fig leaves and oak moss." Like Water Calligraphy, Bamboo Harmony is light, but long-lasting on my skin.
I haven't formed the words yet to tell you in personal terms how much I love these fragrances. Yesterday, I wore Bamboo Harmony to meet up with friends for a late lunch. We were outdoors on the terrace, and with the humidity, I caught an occasional whiff of the wonderful fruity white tea fragrance. It's so fresh. Water Calligraphy, is an elegant aquatic floral with a touch of fruit that gives it a sparkling presence. If you separate your fragrances by season, these are perfect for summer.
Members of the Kilian Club at Facebook were sent complimentary samples of both fragrances right before they arrived at the fine stores that offer By Kilian (such as MiN). If you didn't know about that club, you have a second chance - here. How can you enter to win this contest (technically a sweepstakes)? Just leave a comment on this feature (not in another BTiB post). After you comment here, feel free to send me an e-mail at bestthingsinbeautycontests@gmail.com (the contest address, not my "personal" e-mail) and identify your comment. You can never be too careful about sharing an e-mail address you care about on a blog, so feel free to follow this step (an alternative is to code your e-mail, e.g., myname at gmail dot com, in your comment). Please make sure I have your e-mail. If I can't notify you, you can't win - even if your number is drawn.
You can earn extra entries. Follow this blog (through an e-mail subscription, GFC, or though one of the many Google readers - see sidebar at right) to earn a second entry. If you are a follower, it would help me tally entries if you tell me in your comment how you follow. You don't have to follow to enter. I want everyone to have a chance, but I also want to reward my followers. I must be able to track this entry.
You can earn a third entry by tweeting this contest. You must include "@BTiBeauty" (without the quotes) and the contest title in your tweet. Remember, tweet the contest title - if you don't, that entry won't count. I will tweet the contest this evening, and you can simply retweet it to earn that second entry - if that's easier.
The deadline for entries will be Saturday, May 12, at midnight. The next morning, I will use a random number generator (random.org) to select the winners - all 10 of them. I will e-mail the winners on Sunday morning. The winners will have 48 hours to reply to my message and provide a shipping address. After 48 hours, any unclaimed prize will be forfeited, and another winner will be selected. Make sure to check your e-mail - and look in your spam folder - when the contest ends.
This contest is open to anyone anywhere. Here are the terms. I will carefully pack and ship the prize (as I always do). I cannot insure the prize for overseas shipment - it's amazingly expensive to do so because of the way I have to send insured mail. If it's lost or stolen in transit, I may not be able to replace it with another prize. I really can't even identify the contents on customs forms. I'll do my best on this end; let's see if your mail service does right by you on the other end if we have an overseas winner.
For all the legalese related to this contest, please see the Contests/Sweepstakes page at the top of the blog. Good luck!

A Short Visit with Kilian Hennessy of By Kilian and the Asian Tales Collection, Water Calligraphy and Bamboo Harmony
One wonderful Saturday this month, Kilian Hennessy, made a personal appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue at Tysons Galleria. I was one of the lucky customers who was given a 15-minute appointment to chat with him. I don't really think I spent a whole 15 minutes. There were many people lined up to chat with him, and he was signing By Kilian fragrance bottles for customers even as we spoke. That day - and I suspect every day Kilian makes an appearance - he was the star attraction in the mall.
If you don't know who Kilian Hennessy is, you should. Heir to a long line of cognac makers and grandson of the founder of LVMH (a luxury conglomerate that owns too many brands and labels to list here), Kilian Hennessy has continued his family's luxurious traditions with his own line of fragrances, By Kilian.
Can you imagine a childhood running around in world-famous cognac cellars? Clearly Kilian had a privileged upbringing. He studied at The School of Higher Studies in Information and Communication Sciences at the Sorbonne. He wrote his thesis on "the semantics of odors, in search of a language common to gods and mortals. In search of the angels' share, he encountered the world of perfumery." The "angels' share" is what the House of Hennessy calls the percentage of cognac that inexplicably evaporates from the cellars, like an offering to the gods. After he graduated, he trained with some of the finest noses in the fragrance industry and most prestigious perfume houses.
Kilian's Web site says that his fragrances are redolent of the sugar in alcohol and the wood in cognac barrels. We all draw from our histories, but his was surely rich in the experiences of taste and smell.
His newest collection, Asian Tales, was first conceived as a spiritual journey, with significance and relevance behind the meanings of symbols and words. As a member of the Kilian Club on Facebook, I had received samples of both fragrances in the mail. Kilian's sampling program is a first, I think. He sends out samples of his new introductions to thousands of customers - from France! It's an exciting day at my house when a By Kilian envelope arrives.
These fragrances are as delectable as they "read." I would be hard pressed to select a favorite. Instead, I am alternating them, wearing them to work or out to dinner, feeling pretty. Because I had the privilege of purchasing them at the event, my bottles were signed for me by Kilian himself. They look almost too pretty to touch.
All By Kilian fragrances are presented in beautiful black lacquer box. The box is nestled in a velvet sleeve with the K logo. The box with a lock (to its secret?) comes with a key attached by a ribbon and the story - in this case Asian Tales - printed elegantly as a loose-leaf memento. The black bottle is nestled into a silk bed, redolent of luxurious silk sheets. They would make an elegant gift - for yourself or someone you love.
The Asian Tales Collection will ultimately be composed of five fragrances, four inspired by four Asian Tales and one as a homage to the great art that gave birth to these tales, calligraphy. I'm afraid we'll have to wait a year for the third to be released. In the meantime, Kilian will launch a collection inspired by John Milton's Paradise Lost and the knowledge of good and evil. Both Kilian and his lovely CEO and partner, Elisabeth Noel Jones, described the next collection as being fruit-based. We talked about the forbidden apple and how hard it is to create an elegant apple scent. That one may be the last to be launched in the upcoming collection.
We covered a lot of ground during our short chat. Having already read much of his background, I asked him some zany questions. Is there an angels' share with fragrance. No, we take care that it does not evaporate. It's stored in temperature-controlled warehouses between the time it is made and the time it ships to retailers. Does he think fragrance can improve with time as some vintage fragrance lovers believe? No, it spoils. Keep your treasures in the refrigerator or wine cooler. His favorite cognac? No comment, but he does like XO on ice. Kilian is beyond charming. He answered my crazy questions with a smile - always speaking with his eyes.
For now, if you are interested in giving Water Calligraphy or Bamboo Harmony a whiff, you can order samples at MiN New York (call (212) 206-6366) or Luckyscent (although I don't see samples listed at the latter). Saks Fifth Avenue By Kilian counters should have them too. You can purchase these wonderful new fragrances at the same sources. I'd recommend MiN.
Plus, the wonderful folks at MiN New York just offered us a giveaway. Check back on Sunday!

By Kilian A Taste of Heaven Eau de Parfum
If you don't know who Kilian Hennessy is, you should - if you care at all about fragrances.

Last year, I discovered that Saks Fifth Avenue at Tysons Galleria had the By Kilian line, and I bought my first bottle from his L'Oeuvre Noir (The Black Masterpiece) series. My second purchase was Sweet Redemption, which I featured here. My third purchase was A Taste of Heaven, a fragrance intended for men, but clearly appealing to both sexes - one so unlike me and my tastes in fragrances, I am intrigued by how quickly it snagged me.
A Taste of Heaven, subtitled absinthe verte, was inspired by Absinthe, bittersweet nectar of poets. It was created by Perfumer Calice Asancheyev-Becker, the nose for some of Hennessy's other fragrances. It belongs to the "sub-series" of two fragrances called The Artificial Paradises.
Inspired by Absinthe, bittersweet nectar of poets, this fragrance gives an initial burst of Orange Blossom then blossoms into a heart of Turkish Rose. Then swirling woody notes of Patchouli and Oak Moss join with lascivious Amber. The fragrance beckons one to enjoy a Garden of Delights, an astonishing olfactory oxymoron combining the freshness of Lavender from southern France and the warmth of Bourbon Vanilla.
None of its provenance mattered after I received a sample in a set from Kilian, offered to his Facebook friends and eagerly accepted by me (and, apparently, thousands of others). After wearing the sample a few times, I knew I had to own a bottle of this exquisite potion. I marched straight into Saks and told Ban Aljazrawi, the By Kilian representative at Saks, that I had come for A Taste of Heaven. They guy standing there buying three bottles (for himself, I think) got a chuckle out of that. (I was actually quite jealous. Even though Ban is extremely generous with samples, she gave him a little candle because he purchased three bottles that day. I couldn't buy a third because I'd already purchased two new bottles of CREED earlier and I'm worried that my credit card is going to vaporize).
The notes, listed here, won't explain A Taste of Heaven's appeal. Even so, you should know the complex components that make A Taste of Heaven unlike any other fragrance I own. Rather than list notes as top, heart, and base, By Kilian lists them by scent families (and by strength at counters and online, which is amazingly transparent in the secretive world of juice compositions).
Fresh Note
Bergamot Calabria Oil
Floral Notes
Geranium Bourbon Oil
Orange Flower Absolute
Rose Turkish Absolute
Green Absinthe Oil
Lavender Barreme Oil
Lavandin Abrialis Oil
Lavandin Green Absolute
Lavandin Green Concrete
Amber Notes
Patchouli Indonesian Oil
Oak Moss Extract
Costus Oil at 1%
Ambrarome Absolute
Vanilla Beans Absolute
Tonka Beans Hyper Essence
How does this all translate to me? Like a fragrance that has turned my traditional way of thinking about top notes and base notes topsy turvy. A Taste of Heaven opens with a blast of herbs and lavender. It's demands attention. It's only masculine if you associate lavender with men. Most of the reviews I've read in the last week point to its huge lavender opening. The fragrance appeals to lavender lovers. It has a huge opening, and for a lavender lover, it's like rolling in a field of it, smelling the relaxing scent of the flowers, but equally enjoying the herby green essence of the whole plant. It's intoxicating to me. I'm reminded of a neighborhood cat who decimated a catnip plant I once grew. He rolled in it so many times, he crushed it to death ("I love you to death.") The lavender stays with me for many hours, giving me more lasting lavender pleasure than any other fragrance I own.
As A Taste
of Heaven dries down, it morphs almost entirely, becoming a soft floral, one that sticks around for 12-24 hours. I smell orange blossoms and rose, softened by amber and a nearby glass of vanilla bourbon. I imagine sitting at tea, with a beautiful floral centerpiece, eating tea sandwiches with candied violets on the side, sipping a fine, smooth bourbon ever so slowly. Sometimes I catch a whiff of the lavender eight hours after I've applied A Taste of Heaven; sometimes I don't. That adds to the scent's mystery. Here's what I don't smell: patchouli (there's none of that hippie dippy stink bomb apparent to me) or absinthe. The anise-flavored spirit appears to be a concept for the scent, rather than a main character, which works for me. The Bohemian lifestyle, Green Fairy scene, and super-strong alcohol straight with a sugar cube never captured my tastes or imagination.
Why does A Taste of Heaven challenge my assumptions? I'm accustomed to florals taking center stage, opening fragrances and then tip-toeing off at dry-down. A Taste of Heaven offers me no hint of the florals to come during its first few hours. It's a green lavender field. Then, after a few hours of lavender ecstasy, I slip off to high tea, the memory of the trip lingering as I move into another world I love. It doesn't get better than that!
A Taste of Heaven is available in a refillable spray, solid perfume, and candle. I want that candle next. I could live with By Kilian's rapture.
In the U.S., you can purchase By Kilian fragrances at the company Web site, LuckyScent, MiN New York, and at select Saks Fifth Avenue locations. Check out By Kilian's Facebook page to learn more.

By Kilian Sweet Redemption Eau de Parfum
Composed for the "Temptations" theme of Kilian Hennessy's L’Oeuvre Noire series of 10 fragrances, Sweet Redemption Eau de Parfum ($225) is the end of the last chapter of Kilian's olfactory odyssey to "open a thousand doors in the memory," composed with the most expensive and rare essential oils. My lovely By Kilian representative at Saks Fifth Avenue, Ban Aljazrawi, had sent me a sample of Sweet Redemption many weeks ago. That's when I succumbed to the temptation. I eagerly awaited its introduction and was able to reward myself last week with my own bottle.
What if redemption was the ultimate temptation? The temptation to be redeemed after one has succumbed to the addictions of love and its prohibitions and the artificial paradises, discovered previously in Kilian's universe.
Inspired on one hand by Baudelaire's hommage to sweet and deep fragrances, yet on the other hand by the dark and mysterious poetry of Jim Morrison as he seemingly forebode his own demise, Sweet Redemption is a final bow to these cursed poets - a final commentary on the irresistible charm of the forbidden fruit that tempts us throughout the L'Oeuvre Noire series.
This redemption, this liberation, is intoxicating with its intensity - the innocence of orange blossom, the roughness of the sour orange leaf absolute, the sweetness of the vanilla absolute. The dry-down is composed with a strong balsamic - almost religious - accord built around myrrh, incense, and benzoin. This combination is meant to remind us that redemption is not a choice, but rather, a reward. Unless it becomes our last addiction?
Swee
t Redemption has been something of an enigma for me. I find the orange notes incredibly evocative. I feel like a whole grove has been bottled: blossoms, fruit, bitter peel, the woody tree trunks, and the earth. The fragrance opens with all of those scents, wrapped into a rapturous symphony. Quickly, though, the edgy myrrh and incense make an appearance, taking me back to those "unfortunate" days of high mass, when priests waved burning incense toward the pews, leaving me desperately trying to suppress a cough. That's probably why I find incense an unwelcome note in fragrance, even when the "sophisticated noses" adore it.
As Sweet Redemption dries down, usually about an hour later on me, it totally loses the myrrh and incense, and reduces to a sweet memory of the orange grove. Even before I read its description on LuckyScent, I had written in my notes that the grove lingered, like a breeze might carry the scent to surrounding properties. Six to eight hours later, the scent remains, but is characterized by soft vanilla (not the scent that mall crawlers seem to enjoy, but a pleasant one).
The notes at the By Kilian counter are listed in groups, rather than as opening, heart, and dry-down notes.
Hesperide Note
Italian Bergamot Orpur Oil

Orange Blossom Absolute
Fresh Orange Blossom Absolute
Italia Cytisus Absolute
Balsamic Notes
Cinnamyl Alcohol
Myrrh Resinoide Orpur

Sweet Redemption is a mysterious fragrance to me. I think Greta Garbo might have worn it if she were alive. Known for her irresistible allure and beauty, but also for shunning publicity, Garbo personified a mystery that continues to capture our imaginations. Sweet Redemption does the same over an eight-hour period, leaving me wondering what secrets it has yet to reveal.
Sweet Redemption is gorgeously packaged. The box is nestled in a velvet sleeve with the K logo. The lacquered box with a lock (to its secret?) comes with a key attached by a black ribbon to the L’Oeuvre Noire story, printed elegantly as a loose-leaf memento. The black bottle is nestled into a silk bed, redolent of luxurious black silk sheets. It would make an elegant gift - for yourself or someone you love.
The L’Oeuvre Noire story ends with Sweet Redemption, the scent of liberation. Sweet Redemption is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, LuckyScent, and ByKilian.com.
