Sunday This and That

I find it hard to believe that Thursday is the 4th of July - even though the weather is telling me it's August. For days, we have had and are expected to continue to have severe late-afternoon thunderstorms. Right now, it's clouding up for today's round. Driving home from work Thursday was bad, but Friday it was even worse. It was kind of scary as lightening crashed all around me as I made my way home in torrential rain and horribly heavy traffic. When I got home, as I noted in the comments on The Friday  Forum, I had no power.

I went to sleep, for lack of anything else to do in the dark, around 7:30 pm. Even my cellular reception was bad, so I couldn't surf the Internet on my iPad. I'm surprised I could sleep. It was very hot in my house, and I couldn't open the windows because the noise from my neighbor's generator was unbearable. I awakened at 11:15 freezing because the air conditioner had come back on with the power, and I had nodded off with no sheet to cover me. Fortunately, Charlie was huddled against me, so one side of my body was warm.

I was able to get over to Neiman Marcus yesterday, where I saw the YSL Beauté Fall 2013 Collection. There are some pretty colors, along with the now-essential-for-every-line BB Cream. I purchased two pieces and will show them to you in the coming day.

Lancôme had a big center-aisle display of the new Alber Elbaz Collection. While the new palettes looked lovely, I didn't stop. I will get to them later - if at all. The cutesy design of the mascaras does nothing for me.

I saw and tried the new Tom Ford Atelier d'Orient Collection, four new Private Blend fragrances - Shanghai Lily, Plum Japonais, Fleur de Chine, and Rive d'Ambre - inspired by Asia. My favorite by far is Fleur de Chine, and I'll be featuring it this week.

I also got a peek at photos for Chantecaille's Fall 2013 collection. This week, I'll show you my photos of photos if I must. I still hope to get the official photos before I resort to poor ones, such as the one above.

For a limited time (from what I was told), CREED is making its Royal Exclusives available in 30 ml travel sizes. Traditionally, the Royal Exclusives have been available only in 250 ml flacons, which are pricey. For example, my beloved Jardin d'Amalfi costs $640. Now, you can purchase a smaller edition for $225. That will allow many who found the flacons price-prohibitive to experience these wonderful fragrances. I highly recommend you drop by your favorite CREED counter to sample and try them.

No matter what your politics, if you are a woman, you had to be enraged by this morning's article in the New York Times about Republicans painting Hillary Clinton as old and over the hill. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader who is no spring chicken himself, ridiculed the 2016 Democratic field as “a rerun of The Golden Girls," referring to Mrs. Clinton and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., who is 70. Others were quoted as having similar feelings. Apparently, Rush Limbaugh asked his audience in April whether the American people “want to vote for somebody, a woman, and actually watch a woman get older before their eyes on a daily basis?”

I cannot even believe these men are saying such things out loud! Paula Dean was fried last week for admitting under oath that she had used a reprehensible word. Is this sexism and age discrimination not equally reprehensible?  Women everywhere should be outraged. This transcends politics. I don't understand how men - even old men - get a pass on such outrageous statements. We age. We get grey hair; so do they. We get wrinkles; so do they. Is it distinguished on them, but a liability for us?  I'd like to know what you think.

Update 7/1: I am not publishing comments that are overtly political (or religious), one way or the other. My comments were about age and sex discrimination, and I started with, "No matter what your politics." I'm sorry if some of you feel unheard, but I cannot allow the comments here to become a political forum. While I used examples of Republican men, it was based on a New York Times article published yesterday on the front page - fresh on my mind. I'm sure that there are Democrats and Independents equally guilty of such behavior and speech. It's a shame that it's 2013, and it's still acceptable, apparently, for men to make such statements about women.

Le Métier de Beauté Castaway Collection for the Face and Eye, Exclusive to Neiman Marcus, Live and In Person

As is usually the case, Le Métier de Beauté's press photo of the limited-edition Castaway Collection for the Face and Eye ($125) did not do it justice. I have to admit that when I saw the press photo, which I published here, I was not chomping at the bit to get my hands on Castaway. However, I know from experience that those early photos can be misleading. Not that I've seen the palette, live and in person, I can't wait for it to arrive. It is scheduled for landing next week. Yippee! I won't have to wait three months to get my hands on  my own.

The Castaway Collection is a well-edited blend of blushing and bronzing hues and rich, sheen eye shadows that combine to create glowing skin and a variety of flattering face and eye looks. The multipurpose palette includes eight universally wearable shades that you will be able to mix and layer for endless customized options. Le Métier de Beauté hopes the Castaway Collection for the Face and Eye will serve as your essential beauty staple.

I swatched all the shades, which are reportedly new, but I don't have names for them yet. Fortunately, the sun was shining brightly, high in the sky. I swatched heavily with a sponge-tipped applicator, so you will have to use your imagination for how the blushes, bronzer, and eye shadows will look with a normal application. I swatched both rows from left to right.

The blush/bronzer face shades are gorgeous. The first shade provides a gorgeous rose pink sheen. In my opinion, it's perfect. The second pink, a bit more blue, offers just a hint of sparkle. The warm pink (third down) should please nearly everyone. It's one of those shades that brightens the face. The golden bronzer is warm and wonderful on the skin, and it mixes beautifully with the other three face shades. You will note that it also offers a stunning sheen. All of the face shades have life.

The eye shades are a well-edited mix. The two taupe-brown shades are must-haves. If you live in neutral shades, you are going to want to have them. I do. Even though I love the entire palette, I zeroed in on those shades and had little palpitations.

The shade at the top of my arm is a peachy taupe on the skin - the perfect base shade, the perfect anything shade. It is seriously gorgeous. The warm brown below it is as perfect as brown gets in my eyes. Look at the beautiful sheen it offers!

The moss green shade is a fabulous complement to the other colors. When applied as a wash of color, it lends a distinct touch to the entire look. I love green and wish Le Métier de Beauté offered it in Kaleidoscopes as often as it includes plum shades. The brick/terracotta shade will appeal to all of you warm-skinned beauties. I will have to be convinced I can wear it once I have my own go at it - at home with all my favorite brushes.

Michael Reinhardt has been applying all the shades on customers this week, and he assured me that the terracotta shade is more versatile than it appeared when I swatched it heavily on my arm. I think the first pairing I will try is the the top shade all over the lid, with the terracotta in the outer corner for definition. I'm betting it makes my eyes pop very blue. I didn't try that today. Sometimes anticipation is good.

Although the Castaway Collection is not as limited as Zeitgeist was, I predict it will sell out. Because it's is a limted-edition that will be available only Neiman Marcus Le Métier de Beauté counters, you should pre-order one if you want it. The Friday Forum - June 28

The one (and only) nice part of my drive to and from work is my route through neighborhoods dotted with fabulous hydrangeas, daylilies, and other delights of June. Plants make me happy. It's the little things. Does anything brighten your commute?

The commute has been hell. DC is known for it's brutal traffic. There's a downtown stretch of my new trip that is stressful, as pedestrians lollygag across an intersection in the heat, with no demonstrable knowledge that they are using the entire light cycle, preventing all of the cars from entering the intersection. Sometimes, only one car can proceed through the intersection, adding minutes to what should be a simple trip. On an ideal day, my trip is about 30 minutes. Yesterday in pouring rain, it was over 60. My whole body relaxed when I crossed the border into Virginia. Even though still miles from home, I felt at home.

I love my new colleagues. They are all smart, get-it-done people who are dedicated to the mission of contributing to caring for veterans by helping with the health care infrastructure. That's pretty cool.

I can tell Charlie has missed me. He's been clingy this week. I hope a time will come when I can work from home a bit. Right now, I'm still getting oriented to the work, spending lot of time listening and absorbing.

You probably noticed I had no new makeup to show you this week. I haven't been able to get close to a store. Plus, we are still in that in-between season when there really aren't new introductions. The tester for Le Métier de Beauté's Castaways arrived at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie, and I will get photos tomorrow - my first chance to go there. I can tell you that it's much prettier than the original press photo I posted.

I am still waiting for the official, U.S. press photos of Guerlain and Chantecaile's fall collections. Both will be exciting, and I'm anxious to show you what will be in store. I must have Wild Horses - want it now.

I do have several new fragrance introductions to feature, skin care, and a new and promising teeth whitening system. While such features don't draw the audience makeup does, I think they are just as important to beauty as makeup.

About a week ago, the NY Times published a feature about sunscreens in makeup. New FDA rules require that any SPF claiming “broad spectrum protection” must protect against both UVA and UVB rays.The Times tackled the question about SPF 15 in many makeup products. Is it enough? The answer is a definite no. Companies are working to increase the sun protection in foundations. The paper cited AmorePacific, a Korean company, which introduced the CC Cushion Compact with one of the highest SPFs around: a broad spectrum 50+. “Sure, you’ll use Banana Boat or Coppertone for the beach, but you don’t want that on your face daily,” said Esther Dong, an officer with the company. She said the company had spent much time and money coming up with a stable formulation that would pass American standards and deliver smooth, weightless color.

Many brands are featured in the article, and I highly recommend it if you'd like to have a good understanding of how the industry is tackling FDA compliance. From removal of all SPF claims to stepped-up research and development, companies are making it more clear to us what we should expect from our makeup. Consumers are likely to benefit from better products and better information.

Farmaesthetics Cruelty-Free Classic Waters

I wished upon a star, and my wish came true. I wanted to try Farmaesthetics Classic Waters ($24), the most luxurious thing I can offer my skin on a hot summer day (the kind we've had this week). I can spray them on at any time and experience a mist that cools and treats my skin with glycerin, a humectant that improves smoothness and hydration. Farmaesthetics sent me two, Rosewater & Glycerin and Jasmine Water & Glycerin. The day I received them seemed like a birthday. There's also a  Grapefruit & Glycerin. They have every base covered.

They came at a fabulous time - right after I accidentally knocked over and broke my Chantecaille Rose Water in its tall glass container (and cleaned a hundred pieces of glass that scattered in my bathroom). Yes, it smelled good, but I wept. Then, voila! I had Rosewater & Glycerin with which to replace it. It was a good sign.

The Classic Waters, housed in apothecary bottles with fine mist sprays and a low center of gravity making them less likely to tumble, are romantically reminiscent of the toiletries of the 1930's - softly fragrant, imparting a dewey finish to the skin. However, their most important aspect is the antiseptic nature of the formula, created to clear the skin of germs, bacteria, and other unhealthy contaminants. All of the "flavors" will purify and hydrate your skin, while restoring a fresh feeling and healthy balance to the complexion. Keep them in a refrigerator, and the quick refresh will feel even better when you are hot, tired, or need a lift.

For years, I have regretted having a bathroom that isn't large enough for a small refrigerator. I think that would be the ultimate luxury. About five years ago, I bought one at Target for my guest bathroom. By an inch, it wouldn't fit in the only nook that I thought would accommodate it. I would love to be able to spray on my Classic Waters, straight from the frig. Unfortunately, walking downstairs to the kitchen refrigerator breaks the spell.

We don't need to do animal testing. We shouldn't continue the cruelty that was the norm for so many years. I know Farmaesthetics and other cruelty-free companies share my excitement about these special animals. It really brought tears to my eyes as I watched the news last night - seeing the chimps experience freedom for the first time in their lives. Please let your members of Congress know that you care that NIH will have the money it needs to care for the chimps in the sanctuary system. 

It wasn't planned, but it seems entirely fitting to feature a cruelty-free company at such joyful times. Every time I think about the images I saw yesterday, I cry tears of joy for those animals and my hope I'll see the day when all animal testing is banned worldwide. There are modern ways of testing drugs and items like cosmetics. Regarding skin care and makeup, why should a rabbit suffer so that I can have longer eyelashes? End of diversion.

Madonna Looking Good - Courtesy of Votre Vu

I'm not a huge Madonna fan. Actually, I'm not a Madonna fan at all. I find many of her looks outrageous, which I understand is her intention. However, I think she looked fabulous for the premiere of the MDNA Tour documentary.

Madonna’s makeup artist, Sammy H. Mourabit, used Votre Vu products to create her look for last week’s premiere in New York City. He drew inspiration from Marlene Deitrich’s iconic 1930’s look from the movie “Morocco.”

To achieve Madonna’s flawless complexion, Sammy first hydrated her face with Votre Vu Attentive Crème de Jour for Sensitive Skin without forgetting the neck where he used Portrait Collar Restorative Neck Crème. He then dabbed Votre Vu’s Love Me Deux Concealer in Champagne under her eyes - and also on the darker areas of her skin to even out her skin tone.

One of the tricks he used was mixing the Love Me Deux Nourishing Moisture Tint in Champagne with the Attentive to achieve a dewy look. Next, he accentuated her cheekbones by contouring them with Votre Vu’s Beaute en Bronze Tantalizing Bronzer Duo.

To create a '30's eyebrow, he first groomed her brows with a brush. Then he applied the Arch de Triumphe Daily Brow Definer in Warm inside the natural eyebrow line. The thinner line captures that '30’s look. To cover the excess natural hair, he dabbed on some Votre Vu’s Love Me Deux Concealer in Champagne, giving the illusion of a clean groomed eye without the need for over-plucking.

For the lips, Sammy first contoured them in a heart shape reminiscent of the '30’s style with the Drawmatic Lip Liner in Naked (coming out in September). He followed by mixing two shades of the French Kiss Moisture Riche Lipstick (coming out in September) for a luminous and voluptuous effect. He applied the darker tone, Margaux, to the outer lines of the lip and the lighter tone, Annette, to the inner lip.

On the lashes, he used Eiffel Power Mascara only in the center of the eyelashes. To intensify the '30's look, he added some false lashes to the outer corner of the eye.

The last touch was the Vu-On Rouge in Bouquet Rose on her cheeks and a little bit of the Belle Poudre HD Sheer Face Finish in Light. The result was a modern Marlene Dietrich look.

What do you think? Try to forget the fact that her choreography drew criticism. The first act of her tour relied heavily on the use of guns. She compared their use to action films with the stock comment, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Straight out of the NRA's playbook. Always stirring the pot.

As for Votre Vu, I wish it were easier to see and test here in the backwaters of the DC area. It's one of those brands that constantly entices me, but is always out of arm's reach.

Hanae Mori Eau de Collection No. 8 Eau de Parfum

At No. 2 in Hanae Mori's Eau de Collection series, I was introduced to Mori's fragrances and seduced - her fragrances are thoroughly addictive. The latest member of Hanae Mori's Eau de Collection ($99) is No. 8, which is currently a Nordstrom exclusive and will be more thorough launched in August (e.g., Neiman Marcus, Saks, and other premium stores). Like her distinct designs that merge Eastern and Western elements, fashion designer Hanae Mori's signature scents are exceptional.

I was thrilled to receive a press sample of No. 8 from a Hanae Mori representative. I tested it immediately, something I don't often do. I am a serial tester, and I have to try only one scent/day to keep from confusing my nose. Because of my experience with and love for the prior eau de parfums in the series, I was eager to try it.

Mori's first scent, and her most well-known, was Butterfly, created in the 1990's. It is a complex blend of florals, fruits, and woods. I purchased it last year. Butterfly arrives in a jubilant flutter of wild strawberries, sweet blackberries, blackcurrant, and bilberries. Its heart opens in a melange of lush Bulgarian rose, ylang-ylang, lilting jasmine, and French peony. Butterfly's lasting impression is the deep warmth of rosewood, gentle almond wood, rich sandalwood, and French cedar. Since the debut of Butterfly, every elegant fragrance in Mori's collection has been a work of art - from the bottle to the scent. I realize I just described Butterfly, not the new No. 8, but I got distracted. Today I want to give you a heads up on No. 8.

The Hanae Mori Eau de Collection series of limited-edition, numbered fragrances started with Hanae Mori No. 1 and skipped No. 5 (for obvious copyright issues). These fragrances have all been produced in France from alternative energy sources, including sun and wind power. Their harmony with the natural world makes them special to me. I have two I've never featured: No. 3 (a fruity floral) and No. 6 (a green floral). No. 7 was introduced in 2012, and it's a fragrance you must experience. It's délicieux.

No. 8 is the last in the series - the grand finale of Mori's remarkable Eau de Collection fragrances. With notes of Kyoto cherry blossom, plum nectar, and passion flower, No. 8 is a delicious gourmand fragrance (some may argue that it's a fruity-floral). Reminiscent of lush flower gardens in Asia and topped with fruity delicacies from Europe, this sweet scent is a blend of East meets West, a signature of Hanae Mori’s fashion. The number 8 on the bottle represents an infinity symbol, a reminder to embrace life’s infinite possibilities and live your dreams, just as Hanae Mori has done in all of her endeavors. It's really nice that part of the proceeds from the U.S. sales will go to The National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund in October 2013.

This gourmand fragrance has top notes of Sicilian orange, Kyoto cherry blossom, and plum nectar. It starts its journey on the skin with a divine, sweet, fruity scent. The herat notes are the passion flower (a sublime example of nature's beauty), Sambac jasmine petal, and pink freesia. The base notes that characterize the dry down are Indonesian natural patchouli, Australian natural sandalwood, and musk. The patchouli is "there," but it doesn't overpower the dry-down. Instead, it lends an earthiness to temper the sweetness of the sensory experience of wearing No. 8. It's also the best patchouli a perfumer can use (in my humble opinion). The synthetic stuff in unbearable.

I think No. 8 will appeal to anyone who enjoys fruity-florals that lean sweet. Its gourmand sweetness may remind you of a fruit tarte. Just writing that makes my mouth water. Be on the lookout for Hanae Mori's Eau de Collection No. 8 - now at Nordstrom and next month at other retailers. Please let us know what you think.

Chantecaille Lip Screen Tint SPF 15 for Summer 2013 - Ibiza and Sardinia

Chantecaille's new Lip Screen Tints SPF 15 ($36) have finally arrived at counters. I had been waiting for weeks. They were available at Chantecaille's Web site, but I couldn't qualify for free shipping. I have a mini Chantecaille store here, so there was nothing else I could add to my order. Really. So I waited - for many weeks. Finally, they arrived at Neiman Marcus! Jeannine Barnes texted me the minute they came - bless her. I dashed over to purchase them.

These sheer shades - Ibiza (on left directly above) and Sardinia (on right) - are very pretty. They were inspired by the Islands of the Mediterranean. I featured Sardinia when the tester arrived, but I wasn't able to show Ibiza at that time. There was no tester, and Mai had been substituted in the display as a placeholder (one of my pet peeves).

Lip Screen Tint SPF 15 offers a hint of shine and a whisper of polished color in a sophisticated lip-pampering, broad-spectrum SPF treatment. Once I finally had them in my possession, I was able to take swatch photos at home. I tried to apply them with equal intensity (same number of swipes across my arm. My photos show Ibiza at the top of my arm with Sardinia below.

Ibiza is a very sheer pink. I can barely see it on my lips after I've applied it. If you are looking for "definite color," select Sardinia. It is a very light coral, and it's actually more sheer than the tester I saw and photographed in May. Although coral, it has enough rose in it to look fabulous with my cool-toned skin.

This second photo is a little washed out from the bright sunlight. Both shades fell great on the lips and offer moderate lasting power. I am pleased that they offer protection from the sun's rays. I figure that as long as I can feel them on my lips, I've got sun protection. I've been wearing both since I purchased them. While Ibiza doesn't offer much color, it does give me that desirable sun protection.

Dior Diorblush Cheek Crème from the Summer Mix Pop Art Collection for Summer 2013

After spending weeks looking unsuccessfully for Dior's Pop Art collection at Neiman Marcus, I found it at Bloomingdale's. There they were - the four Cheek Crèmes ($30) I had been anxious to see and try. There are plenty of other pieces in the collection, but I honed right in on the Cheek Crèmes.

From a pop of color on your cheeks, lips, and nails to a dramatic cat's eye, Dior has you covered with exciting limited editions and the newest  hero products. Born backstage, made for you.

There are four beautiful shades of these fabulous cream blushes. They are all shown directly above. From left to right, they are Capri, Bikini, Pareo, and Panama. It took me all of a nanosecond to select Bikini for myself.

I swatched all four for you in full sunshine outside the store. I used a sponge-tipped applicator to apply them. I started at the top of my arm with Bikini, then followed with Capri, Pareo, and Panama. I swatched relatively heavily because these cream blushes apply very sheerly.

With my cool-toned skin, I was attracted to the three pink-rose shades. The orange Panama is not me, but is sure to look great on warm-toned complexions.

Bikini is one of my dream shades: pink-rose-watermelon and luscious. My second choice would have been Capri, the lighter pink. Pareo is bright and will look great on medium complexions. So will Panama.

These cream blushes stay on forever. I left them on my arm when I left  Bloomingdale's. A few hours after I got home, I noticed they were still there, so I washed them off (oh sure) with soap and water. They were still on my skin. Curious, I left them there overnight. When I awakened the next morning, they were still on my arm! I finally removed them mid-day when I pulled out the heavy-duty makeup remover. To say they are long-lasting may be an understatement. Anyone who fears cream blushes will melt during the heat of summer should give these new Cheek Crème a whirl.

They have a lovely texture and apply lightly on the cheeks. You can build the color to the intensity you want. They are easy to apply with your fingertips, a sponge, or brush. I can't find anything wrong with them.

If you'd like to see these treasures, you can find them online at Macy's and definitely in store at Bloomingdale's. I am not sure about other sources. I checked out Nordstrom online and didn't find them.

How to Apply the Chantecaille Fall 2013 Look Using the Wild Horses Palette

I don't have all the official U.S. press photos of Chantecaille's Fall 2013 Collection yet (I keep asking!), but I can share with you a great YouTube video of Casey Hastings demonstrating the look, based on the new Wild Horses Palette.

I met Casey at the Chantecaille counter at Bergdorf Goodman when I asked for help touching up my makeup before a party. She did a fabulous job. I was excited to see this wonderful video from Chantecaille.

I'll have much more for you soon. The collection will not launch until September, so there's plenty of time for the anticipation to build.

Chantecaille's HD Perfecting Powder Giveaway Contest

Le Métier de Beauté Zeitgeist Blush/Eye Palette, Exclusive to Bloomingdale's Chevy Chase, Live and In Person - Swatched

Run to Bloomingdale's at Chevy Chase, Maryland. Do not walk. If you don't live nearby, call. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. I swooned when I saw it in person and immediately started testing. The photo from Le Métier de Beauté that I had published yesterday was nice, but it didn't sell this gorgeous palette to me. No one had to "sell" me when I walked in and saw it in person.

Fortunately, the sun was high in the sky, and I got swatch photos outside the store so that I could show you the beautiful colors while the GWP event is still happening (it ends tonight). If you order today, you will receive a Precision Liquid Liner and a nail lacquer as a GWP.

The second I applied the pink rose Dusk (with its sheen) at the top of my arm, I knew I was buying Zeitgeist. All of the other shades are great shades for using alone or mixed to create your own custom color. Janice loves mixing Punta Cana with other shades to warm them up for summer. By the way, originally I thought these were cream blushes. They are powder. You cannot wear them on your lips. I have no idea how I got that impression from Facebook. Sorry!

The grey Granite Smoke at the top of my arm is a gorgeous grey that leans ever-so-slightly blue. I love Sparkling Violet. It's beautiful on its own, but mixed or layered with Granite Smoke, it's stunning. The bronzy Tanned Sheen made me gasp, and Oyster is a perfect base shade or highlighter.

I adore this palette. Here's the deal - the reason I'm telling you to buy it if you are interested. You know the quality of Le Métier de Beauté already, so you know what to expect. There were only about 50 of the Zeitgeist Blush/Eye Palettes made for Bloomingdale's. I suspect they will be sold out by Monday.

Coming Very Soon: Le Métier de Beauté Castaway Collection for the Face and Eye, Exclusive to Neiman Marcus

Le Métier de Beauté Zeitgeist Blush/Eye Palette, Exclusive to Bloomingdale's Chevy Chase

Just when I was bummed that I didn't order the Temptalia Collection in time, Le Métier de Beauté has introduced a new treasure to salve my wounds. They are celebrating the launch of a new Le Métier de Beauté counter at Bloomingdale's in Chevy Chase, Maryland - a 20 minute drive from my house.

A departure from its Kaleidoscope palette design, the very limited Zeitgeist Blush/Eye Palette ($125) offers eight shades - four for cheeks or lips and four for eyes. Zeitgeist was featured on Le Métier de Beauté's Facebook page with swatches. As of 10:00 am this morning, it had not arrived at the store. They are hopeful for today.

The following shades are in the palette. I hope to show you my swatches later today or as soon as I can get my hands on the Zeitgeist, if not today.

The Friday Forum - June 21

Yesterday, I went over the our largest conservation easement site to meet with the builders for a trail pre-construction meeting. There is a church that borders the property, and this exquisite bank of oak leaf hydrangeas - in all their glory - lined the bank above the parking lot. Fortunately, I had my camera with me, so I parked and started snapping photos, even though it was cloudy. Behind the oak leafs, I found these lace-cap beauties with hostas interspersed. The hydrangeas made the trip especially worthwhile.

Today is my last day of workday "freedom" - if having no work can be considered freedom. On Monday, I start a new consulting job for the federal government in a particularly rewarding area. I will be thrilled to start working again, but I'm realizing that I'll miss hanging out at home with Charlie, with plenty of leisure time for blogging. You will see my schedule of posting change as I adjust to my new routine. Next week, I doubt I'll be able to write two features/day, although once I adjust, my posting times will likely revert to what they were last year.

It's hard to believe I have hit the four-year mark with Best Things in Beauty. Your wonderful comments when I expressed doubts about continuing bouyed my spirits, so I'm making the assumption I can keep going. At some point, I'm going to get too old for this - but you will be growing older with me.

I found it ironic that we had such a good discussion this week and the very next day I published the early news on the Nordstrom Anniversary specials. The juxtaposition was jarring to me, but, what are you going to do? That was not a complete list, by the way. It was the "early teaser list."

I guess by now you've heard that Tom Ford is expanding his beauty line to men. When the MailOnline asks, "Would your boyfriend spend $78 on concealer?" you know it's news.

This fall, the Tom Ford for Men Skin Care and Grooming Collection range will be launched in the U.S. in November. According to WWD, it includes six multifunctional skin-care products that are said to fuse high-performing ingredients with lightweight textures to calm, comfort, and mattify, as well as two grooming products that are intended to correct flaws and improve the appearance of the skin instantly. “Most people say to me, ‘Wow, you have great skin.’ I pay attention to my skin. I use skin-care and grooming products,” said Ford, adding that novices should “get a magnifying mirror and look at their facec. Do you have broken capillaries? Pale or sallow skin? Dry skin?” His answer is clearly fix it or conceal it.

Tom Ford will also be introducing two new oud fragrances (I am so over oud) and new color for women for fall and holiday. I will be following up on the color detail. Here are some new product photos.

I do have interest and hopes for Ford's Atelier d'Orient fragrances - none of which I've seen in our DC-area stores. I know they launched at Selfridges, and I'm not sure they have made their way across the Atlantic. I'm eager to get my nose on Plum Japanois.

Despite the relatively high prices for the men's skin care, I suspect Ford's men's line will be as popular (almost as popular?) as his women's offerings. I would like to see men wearing the mud mask - perhaps at a Tom Ford counter. You know how they glance at us when we are mid-makeover in the beauty department? Ha! We will be able to return the look.

You makeup addicts are also aware, I'm sure, that Marc Jacobs is launching a beauty line in August. It will be sold exclusively at Sephora. Recognizing the potential for profits, as well as brand extension, other fashion designers are jumping into the beauty world. Matthew Williamson, Pierre Hardy, even Christian Louboutin are readying beauty products. It's the 1970's revisited.

I know some bloggers have published photos of the fall Guerlain Collection - and that it's gorgeous. In the U.S., we are not getting all of the colors that are launching in other countries. I'm working with PR and will get you the U.S. collection photos as fast as they hit my inbox.

A few of you have asked about a Le Métier de Beauté summer collection. What you've seen is what you got. EXCEPT, there is a Neiman Marcus-exclusive Kaleidoscope called Castaway that will be available soon. There will be big news for fall (which, of course, launches in the summer). I hear the Kaleidoscope is getting a makeover, and a new one will be introduced. Major renovations are coming to many of the color cosmetics, and there will also be new skin care (one SKU in the fall, one next year). Stay tuned. Le Métier de Beauté has outsourced public relations, and I don't know what their blogger strategy will be. Maybe I should ask!

Claudio Riaz Complexion Highlighter 7

Claudio Riaz is an internationally known makeup artist and has done makeup for celebrities, "socialites," and fashion shows all over the world. Although I had heard his name, I had never seen his brush and makeup lines. Last year, I got to play at Barneys and developed an appreciation for his color line. Some of you know his brushes are fabulous, but I've never purchased one.

I didn't want to leave the counter when I was at Barneys. There was so much to try - such gorgeous colors - that it was a mesmerizing experience. I purchased a few shades of various products last year and have since ordered online. I have ordered from Barneys, Claudio Riaz's own site, and a fabulous discount site (

The cream Complexion Highlighters ($38) are all gorgeous. I could have purchased most of them because their sheerness makes them wearable no matter what the shade. Made with lanolin and beeswax for moisturizing and skin protection, they are stunning. Riaz recommends you use them prior to concealer to correct uneven skin tone or apply to the high points of your face - cheekbones, brow bone, and nose – to brighten the complexion. They are ideal for radiance and a glamorous glow all over the face.

My most recent purchase was Complexion Highlighter #7, a bronze shade that's perfect for summer. It is shown at the top of this feature and below in my swatch photos.

I took my swatch photos in full sun. Because it kept darting behind afternoon clouds, it took about five minutes to snap enough photos to show you the shade accurately. I applied it with my fingertip, so my swatch is a bit uneven. I did not blend it because I wanted good color shots.

I love the way this golden bronze shade looks right now - summery and sun-kissed. I have worn it as an eye highlighter and on my cheekbones and other high points of my face - blended well - to create a faux glow that looks real.

I might not have selected #7 from swatch photos online (they are terrible), but I knew I liked it from my trip to New York. The creams blend beautifully. I'd love to have the full collection of all the shades. I now have 2, 4, 5, and 7.

Here's a look from Claudio Riaz's Web site that features a classic look, created with the Complexion Highlighter and primers and pre-selected colors from his Instant Face Palette. I think it's gorgeous. I don't know that he used #7, but the color looks like it's on the model's cheeks.

Most of the Claudio Riaz products come in a cardboard box and are intended to be slipped into a Refillable Makeup Palette ($28). The box fits tightly into its "shell," and it's hard to get into it. Riaz intended that you purchase multiple products and put them into one of his palettes. I finally ordered one. I certainly wasn't going to buy a palette for $28 to house a $38 highlighter my first time out. I think it's a good investment once you have enough of the little cardboard boxes.

You can find Claudio Riaz at Barneys New York and the Claudio Riaz Web site. It's best to try to see the line in person. While you may not get carried away shopping online, you will standing at the counter - trust me.
