Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Highlighter

I shouldn't be swayed by InStyle. After all, they are compensated to feature beauty products. I thought this time I would give an Urban Decay product a whirl. The daughter of a Facebook friend wrote the piece, and she praised this product to new heights. It's too bad that the Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Highlighter ($26) isn't as nice as I had expected. Live and learn - over and over again.

I selected two of the three shades. Fireball, shown at left above, is described as a peach with a pink shift. OK. That had potential. Sin, shown at right above, is described as champagne. Aura, the one I didn't select, looked like a ghastly lavender-pink online.

Urban Decay describes Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Highlighter as a super-soft, long-wearing, blendable powder highlighter for "strobing." I am already tired of the new term "strobing" used in place of highlighting.

Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Highlighter is finely-milled to perfection for a lightweight (yet luxurious) result with an ultra-soft, creamy texture. It goes on sheer and blends in easily so that you can apply just a little or a lot. The wearable formula applies seamlessly, no matter how much you build it, and it has shades that are suitable for any skin tone. It creates a radiant, strobed effect that lasts all day - and never leaves just a powdery dusting of shimmer. Infused with light-diffusing pigments, it enhances and perfects the skin.

That could be true, depending on your skin and its moisture level. I took my swatch photo in full sun. I applied the highlighters heavily for maximum color with a sponge-tipped applicator. Unfortunately, my swatch photo does not show the true horror of Fireball - a shade that had so much pretty peach potential when I saw the photos.

On my skin in the photo above, Fireball looks peachy - except where the sun hits it directly. There its true nature - so "un-peach" - shows. Look at the blue pink in the center of the swatch. The color is way too blue to be pretty on most of us. The Sin color is fine, champagne as described. It's nice enough, but not special. How many champagne highlighters do we need?

The texture is these highlighters is nice. It is creamy for a powder. The price is certainly attractive at $26. However, I am disappointed. The one that I wanted the most, Fireball, is a blue pink on my face, and I don't find that an attractive highlighting color on me.

Here is another swatch photo. I don't like the blue tone. I should have picked up on its description: "peach with a pink shift." It certainly is a pink shift. Blue pink, and not at all attractive. On my skin, it looks like I had expected Aura to look. I even wondered if it was mislabeled, but the compact does show a peach shade.

I would not recommend that you try Urban Decay's Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Highlighter, unless you want to select Sin for its price and light champagne color. There are plenty of other highlighters on the market that are more worthy of your money - no matter what InStyle says.

Urban Decay New Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss

Yes, it snowed again. Sadly, this snow claimed a victim, the husband of a Facebook friend - someone I like and respect. I have learned that he was shoveling snow, just like the rest of us this morning, when he had a heart attack. It sure was a reminder to me to live every day as if it were your last. You never know.

I realize after that intro, it seems trivial to talk about lip gloss. I had a hard time working up the spirit to write this feature, so I'll dedicate it to Kathleen.

Urban Decay, trading off their Naked franchise, recently introduced a new, permanent lip gloss in nine luxurious shades. A gloss and a rich lip balm in one, this super-nourishing gloss has an addictive, creamy texture and a gorgeous, high-shine finish. Perfect for complementing the always-popular Urban Decay smoky eye, the Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss ($20) feels so luxe that you’ll want to keep applying it all day. The makeup junkies at Urban Decay painstakingly crafted this formula, obsessing over every last detail until it was just right. Laced with ingredients that are good for your skin, the formula includes Hyaluronic Filling Spheres, vitamin E, avocado oil, and shea butter to hydrate and condition lips. Rosehip seed oil provides an extra hit of vitamins, including vitamins A and C.

In a clinical study of 30 participants who used Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss, these results were reported immediately after use.

• 86% of participants had a significant improvement in the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
• 76% had a significant improvement in volume and hydration.
• 86% said their lips felt nourished.

You may ask me, "Why should I care if participants felt that way immediately after application?" The only answer I can give is that you get a nice jolt of moisture when you use Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss.

The bottle features a pretty, highly metalized champagne cap and overshell with a cool “Naked” cutout effect. As pretty as it is, it’s also practical. You can see the shade through the “Naked” cutout and the little window at the bottom (so it’s easy to spot the right shade in your bag). The extra long, flocked paddle applicator also picks up a generous amount of gloss for even color. It has a slightly curved or upward arc to it, which seems to cover the lips in one swoop.

I purchased two shades from Urban Decay: Liar and Naked. Liar is shown in my photo on the left, with Naked on the right. I took photos in full sun. My swatches were taken at the same time. Liar is shown at the top of my arm, and Naked is shown below.

Both are very light. Liar has more color than Naked, which makes sense. Both are sheer and shiny. Liar, described oddly as a mauve pink, is my favorite, mostly because Naked disappears on my lips.

Naked is described as a nude pink with pink pearly. You can see the glistening pearls in my photos. They add a generous sparkle to the otherwise nude color. Now that I have seen these two, I will not fear ordering the darkest shade, Beso, described as a deep mauve-pink. However, I took a look at Temptalia's swatches, and I saw little difference among the new shades on Christine's lips. I'm not sure I need more than two of these lovelies.

Liar and Naked offer average wear. Although they are supposedly scented with a light mint, I can't taste anything. Because of my sinus infection? Who knows? Generally, I dislike mint tastes in my lip products, so whatever exists in this one is very light to evade my attention.

New Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils

Urban Decay has introduced its next generation of 24/7 pencils for the eyes: 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils ($20). They’re crease-proof and waterproof, and the color is extremely long-lasting.

The Shadow Pencils deliver saturated, creamy color payout with a lightweight feel. The new fat shape allows you to cover large areas more quickly. Use the thin tip as eyeliner or the side of the tip as a generous swipe of eyeshadow. Luscious shades, with shimmer, cream, and sparkle finishes, give you lots of choices. Once the color from the pencils sets, it stays put. I was surprised at how long-lasting the color is. Even better, all shades are free of paraffin, mineral oil, and paraben.

I purchased two 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils from Sephora. I had to try Midnight Cowboy, one of Urban Decay's most popular shades. I wanted to see how the company had translated the beige with silver sparkle into this pencil. Turns out it's better, in my opinion, than the original. I also purchased Lit, a golden bronze - more gold than bronze. I wasn't up for trying some of the brighter, more colorful shades, like Morphine (pale lavender), Clash (bright turquoise), or Narc (mossy green), although I did develop an appreciation for morphine while I was in the hospital [wink].

Here is a swatch photo that was taken indoors. I did not blend the shadows at all after I applied them heavily with the pencils. I took the photo in full sun. Midnight Cowboy at the top is a rose gold on my skin. I think it's gorgeous. Lit, below, is almost antique gold. It has bronze in it, but not enough to make it look "dirty." I love both shades; they are shimmering, full-color treats.

It took quite a bit of scrubbing and long-wear makeup remover to get the swatches off my arm. That bodes well for all-day wear on the eyelid. I haven't worn either outside the house yet. I think I might look strange in physical therapy in full makeup. It's an "athletic" environment.

If you like vibrant color and easy application, I think you're going to love these Urban Decay pencils. They are available at both Urban Decay online and Sephora.

Urban Decay 15-Year Anniversary 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set

There I was, primed to strike the second the Urban Decay 15-Year Anniversary 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set became available, at 1:00 pm ET on November 29! A limited number of sets was available before the January introduction date, and I was determined to get one. I did, but not without some Internet angst. I paid $92, which is an incredible deal, considering that 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils normally cost $17 per pencil.

I suspect there were a lot of people like me who clicked on that set the instant it became available. I had refreshed my screen every few seconds, waiting for it to come up. The instant it did, I clicked to "add and checkout." That's when the site groaned under the weight of enormous traffic. It took 10 minutes to go through the checkout screens, a "terminal" wait for each page to load. I really had to be out the door to get to an appointment on time (I made it). I was very pleased with myself, and I was very pleased when the set arrived! Don't worry, if you weren't one of the Urban Decay groupies who managed to order it in November, it will be available again in January.

Introduced to celebrate Urban Decay's 15-Year Anniversary, the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set has six new shades and nine previously introduced ones. I got a shot of the set at work, which you can see at right. I popped over to a window with nice afternoon direct light to get my photos. The problem is, I didn't want anyone to come along and think I was totally crazy, so I only sampled five of the shades on my arm to show you swatches. As the people on my floor get used to my antics, I may get braver. I still haven't forgotten the day a teen neighbor came over to ask why I was taking picture of my arm. How do you explain this to a boy?

Here are the new shades in the set.

• Asphyxia (pinky iridescent purple)
• Corrupt (dark metallic brown with silver sparkle)
• Midnight Cowboy (beige with gold sparkle)
• Perversion (blackest carbon black)
• Stray Dog (shimmery brown taupe)

The rest of the shades - browns, navy blue, bronze, aquamarine, black, and more - are very nice. There are a few purples I'm unlikely to wear, but my friends always love the gifts. Danielle, loved you already, but for donating a kidney to your father today, you'll be the recipient of the shades I give away - and a spot in heaven, I'm sure. You are an amazing person!

Here are five of the shades at right. I think I may have found the window and the best time of day for swatching during the winter. Can you tell I applied them in a hurry? From top to bottom, they are Stray Dog (to-die-for taupe), Stash (one of my all-time favorite green liners (khaki), Mildew (so pretty, I applied it in a thicker line so you could see the color well), Rockstar ( a deep-dark eggplant), and Uzi (shimmering gunmetal grey).

Aren't they gorgeous? I love the velvety soft, water-resistant formula of these 24/7 Glide On-Pencils (I'm not sure they are really waterproof). I always forget how soft they are and smush them when I'm swatching. I will have to sharpen Stash, since I broke off the tip. The sharpener that comes in this set is a wonderful touch. Thank you, Urban Decay!

The 24/7 liner is easy to apply because of its softness. It goes exactly where I want it, and once it dries (about a half-minute after application), it stays put all day. Created with 50% moisturizing ingredients suspended in a sophisticated formula, 24/7 Eye Pencils include jojoba oil, vitamin E, and cottonseed oil among their ingredients. I can apply them on my waterline, and they stay there too.

Urban Decay Fall 2010 Eyeshadow Palettes

Urban Decay will be releasing two irresistible palettes tomorrow for Fall 2010: the Naked Palette and the Vegan Palette. We got a great sneak peek at the fabulous packaging and gorgeous colors at Chic Profile and on Urban Decay's Twitpics. I wanted to share them with you.

If you read my post on Clinique's cat's claw extract ingredients last week, you'll know I like to promote products that are made without harming animals. The adorable packaging of the Vegan Palette says in script lettering, "We don't do animal testing...how could anyone?" My sentiment exactly!
