The Friday Forum - March 4

We awakened this morning to a winter wonderland - the perfect kind of snow that stuck to the ground and trees, but left the roads only wet.  My little snowdrops were covered earlier, but now they are visible once again.

This has been a crazy-busy week for me. In addition to starting to work again (part time this week while we wait for Procurement to do their thing), I have also been in the final throws of a home refinancing. Interest rates plunged again, and I decided to take advantage of "found money," especially with a generous discount from my mortgage broker. I wish mortgage finance companies could make their requests for documents all at one time, not spread out over weeks. One day it's, "We need copies of this," and the next it's, "We need copies of that." On top of that, I had to straighten out this beauty warehouse I call home before the appraiser showed up.

I'm looking forward to getting back to some kind of routine next week. That will probably mean writing at night. My features will publish, but you won't get notice of them until the next afternoon.

I want to swing by the counters this weekend to see if anything new has arrived. That should be fun since the two major beauty events have ended, and the departments shouldn't be as crowded. I'll go after the GE repairman comes tomorrow morning to tell me why my microwave and dishwasher quit. Great timing!

It's time for The Friday Forum. The Friday Forum has always been an opportunity to share information. Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Tell us about it! Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Tell us why! Do you have questions others might be able to answer? We can help! Want to talk about skin care? I'm game. Just use the comments. We have busy weekends and slow ones on the forum. I hope you are ready to share.

I plan to write over the weekend. I want to show you the new Armani color, and if the sun is out, I'll get photos for features. Hope to see you again soon!

"Yay!" to found money, Charleston Girl. Would that we could all "find" money somewhere unexpected (Under an old chair cushion, in Grandma's mattress, backyard treasure?!?). ;-)

I'm crazy about Bite Beauty's new "Amuse Bouche" lipsticks. I purchased "Pepper" which I think brings to mind a red tone, but it's really a rosy Shade with brownish undertones. Kind of a MLBB, very easy to wear. Even though, price wise, they may not fall into the luxe category the creaminess, staying power, variety of shades, and smell...plus the fact that they're good for you!...makes them as luxurious as any lipcolor I've tried. I'll definitely be purchasing more shades.

And I know I'm late to the game with this brand, but I recently had an opportunity to try Sunday Riley skincare at a discount. I was intrigued after getting generous samples of Sunday Riley's "Luna Oil" from Sephora and loved how my skin looked and felt in the morning after using the oil the night before. I ended up purchasing "Good Genes" serum and "Tidal" which is described as "Brightening Enzyme Water Cream." My skin feels like silk and reddish spots have disappeared. It's staying as part of my skincare repertoire!

Hi MamaVal,

You'll have to let us know how the SR performs for you after about four weeks. I'll be curious.

If only I could win the lottery...that would be big found money!

Not beauty related, but I must say I have fallen in love with my new dishwasher. I had no idea how bad the old one was until I got the shiny new one two weeks ago. It is so so so very quiet and the dishes are so so so very clean and completely dry. I had gotten used to the old one leaving things a bit damp. And the old one was so loud compared to the barely audible whisper of this machine. lol

Petunia,

I'd love to have a new one! I bought my mother a new one last summer, and it's so nice. Quiet? Yes! You don't have to wash the dishes before you put them in. I love hers. I may end up having to get a new one. We'll see if today's repair guy can fix mine.

I was looking at pretty GE Profile appliances. I'd love to upgrade! My GE kitchen has lasted 35 years. It doesn't owe me anything.

Hi ladies!

MamaVal please keep us posted on the Luna oil. I've heard good things about its retinol- that it actually makes pores look smaller. I'd love to try it. Unfortunately Good Genes stings my face insanely bad every time :(

I got a sample of Bite's new lippies and agree they are lovely products. I'll have to see if I can find a good shade to get a full size in. I recently purchased the Laura Mercier candleglow foundation and that is my type of base- soft, light and a bit glowy!

Speaking of retinol, has anyone tried the Kate Somerville DermalQuench Liquid Lift? Tempted to try!

The good news: my microwave is fixed. The internal fuse had blown, as I thought. The bad news: the motor on my dishwasher is dead. Darn! New dishwashers are expensive!

...but essential!

I'll let you know, Jill! So far, so good. And MUCH gentler than other retinoids I've used. I am kind of surprised that I've been able to use "Good Genes" without irritation since I've got quite sensitive skin and AHA's used to drive my skin into an itchy, red fit of irritation. It contains lactic acid, but I'm able to tolerate it quite well. Maybe menopause made this old girl toughen up! ;-)

I laughed when I saw where this conversation was headed this morning--dishwashers! But seriously ;-) they are beauty related when you think of all the wrinkles we avoid by having a fast, efficient, quiet dishwasher to do the work for us. No more scowling over water spots, no more frowning over streaks, no more pursed lips as we scrub away at food stuck in fork tines . . . Yes, a modern dishwasher is a true beauty tool! LOL

I just bought one of the new Amuse Bouche (love the name) in Rhubarb. It was a toss up between that and Mamaval's choice, Pepper. They're both beautiful, natural shades in the same color family, but Rhubarb is more plum than rose and so it is a bit deeper. From the few shades I swatched, I'd say the new AB is a creamy, opaque formula that is sure to please legions of lipstick loving women. It has a nice satin finish and normal wear time given it is not one of those long-wear formulas. It's creamy, but stiff enough that I haven't had any problem with it bleeding into liplines. But if I did, I'd simply use a lip pencil first. In any event, Sabrina (The Beauty Look Book) and Christine (Temptalia) have swatches of all the colors on their blogs. We've had the year of the bronzer, the year of the blusher, the year of the highlighter, and now the cosmetic brands seem to be focusing on lipstick. With such a wealth of innovative formulas in bold and rich colors, you can forget about The Year of the Monkey--this is The Year of the Lipstick! :-)

Haha! Don't forget, we can steam our faces over the dishwasher when we open the door mid-cycle! TRUE beauty treatment.

Thanks for the heads-up, Eileen, about the swatches. I, too, found them very creamy but not enough to bleed into my lip crinkles. I loved Rhubarb, too, and I would say your description is spot-on.

I adore the picture. As I was walking through my garden, admiring the early bloomers (daffodils, hellebore, hyacinths) I was pondering of the loveliness and optimism of spring. What did I enjoy this past week beauty related? Still loving the Coco Shine Clic lipstick and the new Chanel nail polish formulas are not shabby either. The bottle design with the empty front is just unattractive though.
Have a great weekend.

Jill, I've tried the one without retinol. It's fabulous. A few years ago, I was one of about five bloggers invited by New Beauty to nominate the most innovative product of the year. Dermal Quench was my choice.

All, I'm not excited about BITE's new lipstick because it's opaque. I have to have some sheerness. That's why you won't see it featured here. Like the brand very much, though.

Anyone interested in Amuse Bouche,

Since our charming Charlestongirl won't be showing any of these because of their opacity, I hope she won't mind if I direct you to Sabrina of The Beauty Look Book. Friday she posted an overview with arm swatches of all the shades grouped into color families. Today she posted her first set of lip swatches of the seven neutral shades with detailed descriptions (the other color families will follow over the coming days). What I especially like about her approach is that she shows the colors swatched side-by-side on the arm but then she also arranges the lip swatches side-by-side so you can really see the variations in color. If you're not familiar with Sabrina's blog, her artistic layouts and color true photography are simply superlative.

Hi Jill,

People seem to have a love it or hate it reaction to Good Genes most probably because it has a needlessly low pH (2.6 which is less than what lactic acid needs to be effective) and also contains arnica and lemongrass both of which can be very irritating depending on how much is in the product or how sensitive a person's skin is. Each thing on its own might not be a problem, but the combination can be quite irritating. When I tried a sample of Good Genes, my skin quickly reddened and felt hot. I had to remove it and let my skin rest before applying a soothing product I usually use after IPL . When I looked up the ingredients, and learned about the pH level, my first reaction was "Well, duh!" LOL

I'm very, very late to the conversation. The ONLY snow we had this entire winter was exactly as you described your most recent one. It was beautiful, though...while it lasted. I like Bite lipstick, but don't think I'll try these new ones yet. I seem to have close matches to most of the colors, and I really need to stop spending so much. Ah, well...
