Chanel's Collection Libre is an unexpected holiday collection that celebrates the modern yet sophisticated elements of beauty. Chanel Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer Lucia Pica experiments with striking contrasts - a clash of colors, textures, intensities, and light - to capture a contemporary edge and thrilling moment in time.
Here are the product highlights.
Les 5 Ombres Eyeshadow Palette ($80), a limited-edition palette called Architectonic inspired by urban architecture, a modern palette that gives structure to the eyes with mirror-like silver, concrete grey, and gunmetal blue eye shadows in matte to shimmery textures.
Joues Contraste Powder Blush ($45) is the staple blush in a bright pink shade called Hyperfresh that can be used lightly for a soft accent of color or built up to make a statement.
Calligraphie de Chanel Waterproof Intense Cream Eyeliner in Hyperblack ($35) is a modern way to line the eyes. This long-lasting gel liner creates a super-black, vinyl finish for a striking look. It has a a specially developed brush for precise application.
Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour ($37) will impart fresh, bright shades of burgundy pink and strawberry red to the lips for the season. The shades are called Ultraberry and Ultrarose.
Rouge Allure Gloss Colour and Shine Lipgloss in One Click ($34) offers softer Super Nude and Super Coral tones to create the look of polished brilliance.
Rouge Double Intensité Ultra Wear Lip Colour ($37) is the best-loved, long-wearing lip color in a shocking Curious Orange that pops on the lips.
There are four featured nail shades: Les Vernis is Liquid Mirror (silver) and Hyperrose Glass (transparant pink), and Pink Rubber (a powdery pink). All are $28.00.
I took other photos of the holiday shades in the Neiman Marcus Café, but I cannot find them right now. If I can dig them up, I'll add them to this feature. I know there has been much conversation about this holiday collection, so I wanted to show you what I had as soon as possible.
The collection will be available in department stores, specialty stores, and at Chanel's Web site (now) in November 2016.

Giorgio Armani Beauty Nail Lacquer from the Bright Ribbon Collection for Summer 2014
When the Bright Ribbon Collection was launched recently, my eyes went straight for the Rouge d'Armani Sheers. After ordering two, I lingered at the Nail Lacquers ($20). Something about #302, a coral that is "so not me," commanded my attention. It telegraphed, "I am the coral of the season; you will never regret purchasing me." So, I put aside my natural attraction to pink and ordered a coral shade. I'm glad I did! Armani's #302 is exquisite.
This rich, thick polish creates an exception creamy shine with long-lasting color. The flat and wide brush sets a clean drop at the base of the nail and easily stretches color to the nail tip with one stroke. Even I can do it. The transforming "gel on brush" prevents dripping for a clean, precise application. The application is easy, and the application is long-lasting. What's not to love?
I took swatch photos on the color wheel in full sunshine. I applied two coats. More would have been overkill. This nail lacquer covers well.
Is this not a shade that screams summer? I think it's a fingertip shade - and a shade for your toesies - to draw attention while still telegraphing Armani elegance.
I have a hard time applying Nail Lacquer, but I find that Armani's shades apply easily, neatly, and evenly. There are six new shades in the Bright Ribbon Collection - including turquoise and pastel grape. This is the only one I've tried. I purchased it at the Armani Web site. It's also available at Giorgio Armani Beauty counters.

Bobbi Brown Raw Sugar Shimmer Nail Polish from the Raw Sugar Collection
Bobbi Brown has introduced two new, limited-edition shades of Shimmer Nail Polish with her Raw Sugar Collection: Raw Sugar and Golden Beige. I seldom get carried away with new nail polish shades. I can't wear them all! However, the magnetic color of Raw Sugar and its reasonable price ($15) combined to lure me into a purchase.
Dress up nails with long-lasting shimmer (it's Bobbi's favorite way to accessorize hands and toes). Pearlescent color casts nails in the starring role with a range of chic, shimmering shades.
I think this shimmering bronze is gorgeous. I took swatch photos in full, mid-day sun. What I see on my "fake nails" color wheel is a rose bronze. The color attracted me like a moth to light. I love rose gold, now I am looking at rose bronze, and I'm excited. I'd like an eye shadow next, please. Maybe even a bronzer.
You all know my nail polish application skills are not properly called skills. I did my best - two coats here - but I still didn't get an even application. Blame me, not the product! I have earned the nail polish application klutz title fair and square.
Despite my application failures, this color is, in my humble opinion, extraordinary. It's a limited edition, so don't delay in purchasing it if it grabs you like it has me.
The Raw Sugar Collection is available at Bobbi Brown's Web site, where there is a special gift now (overnight shipping through today along with a travel-sized SPF 50 Protective Face Base with any $50 order with code LONGWKD), or your favorite Bobbi Brown retailer.

Coming Attraction: Giorgio Armani Beauty Eccentrico Collection for Holiday 2013
The Eccentrico Limited Edition collection was inspired by the Giorgio Armani Eccentrico touring exhibition: Milan 2012, Hong Kong 2013, and Rome June 2013. Mr. Armani showcased some of his most memorable and lavish couture designs throughout his career – a fusion of art, fashion, and design, unrestrained by a bizarre play of colors and wild fantasy. The Giorgio Armani woman is multifaceted and has an eccentric side that she wants to express. He gave her full rein.
Eccentricity was never so chic – Linda Cantello, International Makeup Artist for Giorgio Armani Beauty
The Eccentrico Palette, shown above, is a 4-in-1 multi-illuminator with poppy blush colors for a healthy, radiant complexion. A light dusting of silver pearls on top of the compacted blush powder creates the ultimate glow. The tip for use? Use each color like an eyeshadow to highlight your gaze! If I can't own this, I'm going to cry.
New Shades of Lip Maestro and Nail Lacquer are being introduced. The Lip Maestro shades intrigue me. I'm betting they are gorgeous on the lips.
The first luminous matte lacquer in Armani's new Nail Lacquer will be available in three new bright shades. Mix and match with corresponding shades on lips and nail.
- 302 Clash
- 303 Dazzling
- 505 Eccentrico

Giorgio Armani Beauty Nail Lacquer - At Your Fingertips
My savvy readers probably already know about Giorgio Armani's new Nail Lacquers ($20). They started to arrive at counters weeks ago, so they should be available at all stores by now. I haven't set foot in a store since the weekend before last - mostly because my back was in bad shape. I had a procedure yesterday for that.
My own photo of Taupe Greige (#105), taken indoors at the Armani counter at the Chevy Chase Saks Fifth Avenue, is shown above. It caught my attention instantly because it is an Armani signature color.
A richer, thicker polish creates exceptional shine with long-lasting color. The flat and wide brush sets a clean drop at the base of the nail and easily stretches color to the nail tip with one stroke. The transforming gel-on brush prevents dripping for a clean, precise application.
Gio (#301), shown directly above, is a classic red, but the colors range from light and iridescent to traditional. There is something in the collection for everyone. You can see little online swatches here.
Have you seen them yet? The look is luxurious - typical Armani. The brush must have been made for me and others impatient to apply nail lacquers. I don't want to have to swipe seven times to evenly color my nails with the first coat.
I will let you know (with swatches) when the full collection has arrived, and I've purchased my two. Think I'm going to succeed with my "only two" resolution?

More on Guerlain's Voilette de Madame Collection for Fall 2013
Guerlain has introduced its exclusive Fall 2013 Voilette de Madame Collection, composed to make every woman irresistible, expressing her seduction and personality with style and femininity. Madame’s ultimate accessory, the veil, is the inspiration for this season’s collection. Like Madame herself, the veil gives only small glimpses into a woman’s mysterious world. And as Madame unveils herself, her secrets come to light.
I promised an update as soon as I received the press release for the collection. I got it. Here's what you will find at your favorite Guerlain counter.
Gloss d’Enfer Maxi Shine - Three New Limited-Edition Shades ($30.00)
Gloss d’Enfer Maxi Shine glosses guarantee your lips a shimmering, radiant, and plumped look. Lightweight and instantly eye-catching, Maxi Shine offers tailor-made effects for a devastatingly angelic smile. Here are the fall shades. I had to order them all.
Rouge G de Guerlain captures the quintessence of luxury. With a simple click, the case reveals a mirror and a lipstick nestled within. An exceptional, fabulously chic accessory, Rouge G surpasses mere beauty. The ruby formula gives lips a vibrant luminosity with highly concentrated pigmentation for intense color. Perfectly paired with Guerlain’s matching Gloss d’Enfer counterpart, Rouge G’s new fall shades are enclosed in a limited-edition case adorned in a screen-printed dotted Swiss veil.
There are three new shades for fall. I'm stunned that Guerlain gave them the same numbers and names as the glosses. Nevertheless, I was "forced" to order two of them. I left Madame Flirt behind. She is too dark for my tastes.
Guerlain’s newest blush encompasses four luminous colors: raspberry, pale pink, beige, and coral, which work together to illuminate and highlight, leaving a velvety finish. Madame Rougit comes enclosed in a lacquered black box with a magnetic closure and slips into an elegant suedette pouch with coral topstitching. Madame Rougit will be mine!
Le Vernis - One New Limited-Edition Shade ($23.00)
Guerlain’s nail lacquers are indispensable allies for accomplished femininity. These ultra-vibrant shades incorporate adhesive resins to offer a perfectly even sheen that lasts for days. For the fall season, Guerlain introduces a new shade of Le Vernis: 860 Madame Batifole, a deep and intense fuchsia.
Ecrin 2 Couleurs - Eight New Permanent Shades ($44.00)
Guerlain’s new duo eye shadows are the perfect accessory for creating statement looks. Inside the slender gold case are two stunning colors: one a pure color and one a luminous veil. The pure color shadows are matte and intense, gliding on to create instant effect. The other serves as a veil, a sparkly or metallic texture that can add a layer of dazzling radiance.
There are eight new shades, and I didn't have the energy late last night to crop and save all eight photos. They are an interesting - and in some cases unconventional - mix.
Guerlain’s new retractable eye pencils transform the eyes in an instant. The pencil’s clever combination of smooth waxes, luminous polymers, and intense pigmentation allow it to create the perfect eye contour. Long-lasting, non-transferable, and water-resistant, Guerlain’s eye pencil is amendable to every occasion. I'm going to check them out when they arrive in my local stores.
Update 8/5: The three Rouge G names have been corrected - really just one of them. One was incorrectly named. My apologies! I received the pieces I ordered today, and they are gorgeous - totally gorgeous. They were supposed to arrive Friday (they had been sent Two-day Air), but they didn't come until today. When UPS is good, it's very, very good. When it's bad? I had to wait days for my treasures. It made me a very anxious gal.

Summer is Calling with Pure Ice Nail Enamel
Pure Ice has brought chic and vibrant colors to nails for summer - from captivating blues and greens to stunning pink hues for your fingers and toes. With their signature long-lasting formula, Pure Ice has created incredibly eye-catching and irresistible shades. They promise to take your breath away. Pure Ice graciously sent me three shades to try, and I like all three. Me - the ultra-picky one!
Here are the shades in the summer collection.
Flirt Alert, shown at the bottom on the left, is called a bright orchid pink with a crème finish. I'm not sure what color orchid pink is, given that orchids have been hybridized to bloom in every imaginable shade of pink. Flirt Alert is a rich, deep pink - almost red in its appeal.
I swatched using a color wheel and took photos in full, mid-day sunshine. From left to right, the colors are Flirt Alert, Jackpot, and Strapless (I often swatch alphabetically). My apologies to you and Pure Ice. I did not see the Charlie fur that stuck to my swatched nails before I took my photos - proof that I'm accustomed to his beautiful fur in my life. I applied two coats of each color, although Flirt Alert only needed one to cover nicely.
I will wear all three colors. Of the two pinks, my favorite is the Jackpot shown in the center. What a perfect bright pink for summer! Your toes will draw envious glances in either Jackpot or Flirt Alert.
The blue Strapless is a knockout. One coat left me underwhelmed, but it sprang to life with two, deepening the shade and adding a remarkable shine. It looks deeper in the topmost of my swatch photos. I think the color is truer in the photo directly above.
All Pure Ice nail enamels are free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP and contain a patented salon long-wear formula for a look that will last. They applied easily and evenly - even for me. Retailing at only $1.99 (!), these polishes are the perfect way to bring chic looks from the runway to your life without breaking the bank.
Pure Ice nail enamels are available through Pure Ice Web site and Walmart stores nationwide. I had fun on the company's Web site. Pure Ice qualifies as my deal-of-the-week feature.

How can you enter to win this giveaway contest (technically a sweepstakes)? Just leave a comment on this feature (not in another BTiB post). After you comment here, feel free to send me an e-mail at bestthingsinbeautycontests@gmail.com (the contest address, not my "personal" e-mail) and identify your comment. You can never be too careful about sharing an e-mail address you care about on a blog, so feel free to follow this step (an alternative is to code your e-mail, e.g., myname at gmail dot com, in your comment). Please make sure I have your e-mail. If I can't notify you, you can't win - even if your number is drawn. I can't believe the number of winners I haven't been able to find in the past.
You can earn extra entries. Follow this blog (through an e-mail subscription, GFC, or though one of the many Google readers - see sidebar at right) to earn a second entry. If you are a follower, it would help me tally entries if you tell me in your comment how you follow. You don't have to follow to enter. I want everyone to have a chance, but I also want to reward my followers. I must be able to track this entry.
You can earn a third entry by tweeting this contest. You must include "@BTiBeauty" (without the quotes) and the contest title in your tweet. Remember, tweet the contest title - if you don't, that entry won't count. I will tweet the contest early this evening, and you can simply retweet it to earn that second entry - if that's easier.
The deadline for entries will be Wednesday, March 15, at midnight. I will use a random number generator (random.org) to select the winners. I will e-mail the winners the next day. The winners will have 48 hours to reply to my message and provide a shipping address. After 48 hours, the prize will be forfeited, and another winner will be selected. Make sure to check your e-mail - and look in your spam folder - when the contest ends.
This contest is open to anyone anywhere. Here are the terms. If the sample is lost or stolen in transit, I may not be able to replace it. I'll be sending the samples to the winners in padded envelopes.
The winner must be able to provide me with a "mailable address," meaning the U.S. Post Office recognizes it or its street, province, and other "elements" the way the winner provides them. I've had some trouble with both U.S. and international addresses lately.
For all the legalese related to this contest, please see the Contests/Sweepstakes page at the top of the blog. Good luck!

Guerlain Le Vernis Maxi Shine Nail Lacquers - Four New Shades Swatched
You'll want to wear Guerlain's new Le Vernis Maxi Shine Nail Lacquers ($23). This display of the new Maxi Shine Collection will reel you in. I was able to show you a coming attraction recently. Now, I have swatches of four of these beauties.
Guerlain’s 10 newest nail lacquers are indispensable allies for accomplished femininity. These ultra-vibrant shades incorporate adhesive resins to offer a perfectly even sheen that lasts for days. The new collection also contains a base and top coat, designed with a silicone derivative to strengthen, reinforce, and protect the nail. Using each shade’s extra-flat and widened brush, Le Vernis creates a shiny, daring, and immaculate nail with ease.
The three-step nail ritual starts with La Base Protectrice, continues with color, and ends with Le Top Coat Gel for a high-shine, gel effect. The protective base coat acts like a protective film that facilitates the application of the lacquer with no risk of nail yellowing. I wouldn't go without it. The formula has been enriched with a silicon derivative that helps stimulate and support the strength and growth of the nail.
Step 2, a long-lasting nail color, made with adhesive resins and elastic polymers keeps the color true and lasts longer. Thanks to a wide and flexible flat brush design, the color goes on easily and evenly. The formula does not contain formaldehyde.
Step 3 is an innovative Gel Top Coat. A gel-like, transparent texture provides a result so perfect that it looks like you went to a top-notch salon. The formula helps to maximize shine and make the nails look thicker. Nitrocellulose, a plasticizer that is both water- and scratch-resistant, and Cellulose Acetate Butyrate release a generous brilliant film that stays on the nail. Your nails will be perfectly smooth and shaped. The color will stay radiant and shiny for days.
While I was at Neiman Marcus today, I swatched #263, À la Parisienne; #64, Gemma; #260, Jardins de Bagatelle; and #165, Champs- Elysées. I swatched them in that order from left to right and took my first two photos in full sun.
What's amazing is that each of these shades was one coat. It covered perfectly. I'm sure with La Base Protectrice, the results would have been even prettier. I am smitten with these shades.
As I must always caution, my application techniques are a bit deficient. Nevertheless, these colors reached out and grabbed me. I'm especially in love with Gemma (left middle), but the guys in the store all selected Champs- Elysées (far right) as their favorite. You will have a hard time selecting only one.
The photo directly above was taken inside the store. These beauties don't need sunshine to shine!
Guerlain’s Maxi Shine Collection is available now at select locations of Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman - and at the Guerlain Boutiques. Maxi Shine will be available at select locations of Sephora in May 2013.

Coming Attraction: Guerlain Le Vernis Maxi Shine Nail Lacquers
Get your fingernails and toes ready for summer! You'll want to wear Guerlain's new Le Vernis Maxi Shine Nail Lacquers ($23) to shine. With just a little help, you can be the modern version of the '60's pin-up girl.

Here's a scan of the new shades. I think I like nine of the 10, so clearly I'll have to make some decisions when these arrive at the counter. Below, I have one scan and one low-resolution image of the swatches. My PR contacts didn't have better photos - yet. Don't forget to click on the photos to enlarge them for the names. If you can't read the names, leave a comment, and I will add them below.
Guerlain’s Maxi Shine collection will be available beginning in April 2013 at select locations of Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman - and at the Guerlain Boutiques. Maxi Shine will be available at select locations of Sephora in May 2013. See anything that catches your eye?
If there's anything you would like to pre-order so that you can be the first among your friends to be wearing these lovely shades - or the Gloss d'Enfer Maxi Shine I featured yesterday - call the Guerlain Boutique in Las Vegas. They get just about everything new first. I shop with Rhonda, but everyone there is fabulous. The phone number is (702) 732-7008. Free shipping and no tax. You can buy more!

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Color from the Été Papillon de Chanel Collection for Summer 2013
Chanel is introducing three limited-edition Le Vernis nail lacquers ($27) with the Été Papillon de Chanel Collection for Summer 2013. I've got my eye on the pretty green one. Again, please pardon my indoor photo of a photo. I have more of them and will be posting them as I get the time to write.
The dazzling colors of butterfly wings inspire a joyful look for summer with the enchanting Été Papillon de Chanel Collection. Peter Philips envisioned electric shades of blue, pink, and platinum to make the lashes, eyelids, and fingertips glow.
Three shades show every look for summer: Bel-Argus, metallic blue; Azuré, metallic blue green; and Lilis, intense coral. I'm sure you can tell which is which.
I have more to show you from Été Papillon de Chanel. The mascaras are up next - later today. They are really colorful. Stay tuned.

Coming Attraction: Chanel Collection Avant-Première
Here's another bad indoor photo of a photo. I really want to show you all the upcoming Chanel collections. I did the best I could in the store, but it wasn't good enough.
Chanel's Collection Avant-Première will ship to Chanel counters on May 6. The edited scoop from Chanel follows.
Always at the forefront of culture, Gabrielle Chanel instilled her style in classic cinema. By special request, she created fashions for beloved Hollywood actresses, such as Gloria Swanson, and costumed the era's leading ladies of French film - Ina Claire, Jeanne Moreau, and Delphine Seyrig.
In a tribute to the elegant screen style developed by Gabrielle Chanel, Peter Philips, [former] Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, developed Collection Avant-Première. This brilliant palette spotlights new color-rich Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Lip Colour Lipshine and pays homage to Mademoiselle's influence on film.
To extend the Rouge Coco range, the new Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Lipcolour Lipshines ($34) combine a beautiful sheen with 30% more color pigments than classic Rouge Coco Shine. The Hydratendre Complex softens the lips, plumping them for a healthier, fuller appearance. There are eight new sheer and shiny shades with intense color, from golden beige to bold red.
The classic Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour ($34) will be available in six new, luxurious shades, from peach-beige to satiny red - each celerating the unstoppable spirit of Coco Chanel.
Not to be outshone, Les Vernis ($27) will captivate in breakout shades of purple-brown, orange red, and peach-pink.
I really like Rouge Coco Shine and can't wait for the new shades to arrive at counters. That should be in mid-May.

Dior Vernis in Golden Light from the Pink Champagne Collection for Neiman Marcus
Dior's limited-edition Pink Champagne Collection, an exclusive at Neiman Marcus, features two Dior Vernis nail lacquers: Golden Light, shown above, and Tutu, a baby pink that fits its name perfectly. Both are $24.
I allowed myself to select one. It was a tough decision. Although I have many gold nail lacquers, Golden Light must have exerted a gravitational pull. I had to leave Tutu behind. To me, gold is a neutral; pink isn't. Then again, pink would look very pretty with all the black, navy, and brown I wear to work.
Here is a photo of Golden Light at my house, with sunlight radiating all around the bottle. I had used it only to apply the first coat for my swatch photos, so I was surprised by the fluid level when I turned it on its side. That air bubble decided to float to the top, making the photo relatively useless.
Golden Light is a very sheer nail lacquer. Although I could have stopped at two coats, for a sheer, pretty gold nail, I applied three coats to get maximum color and shine. In person, the sparkles don't appear quite as evident as they do in direct sunlight, but it's snazzy nonetheless.
The color is a champagne gold, light and pretty. Think of the sparkles as the champagne's bubbles. It's a perfect rendition - except for the theme of pink champagne. You'll have to get your pink from Tutu.
This collection is available online at NeimanMarcus.com. If you would like to work with a Dior representative and don't know one, call (703) 761-1600 and ask for the Dior counter (extension 3787), then ask for Ewa McDonald (pronounced Eva). Or you could call an extraordinary sales associate, Marilyn Schubert, at the same phone number, requesting extension 3286.

Estée Lauder Mad Men Collection for 2013
Last year, Estée Lauder launched its first wildly successful Mad Men Collection, a limited-edition makeup collection inspired by the award-winning AMC drama Mad Men. The launch was timed to coincide with the premiere of Season Five, and now a second, limited-edition collection will launch to celebrate the two-hour season premiere of Season Six on Sunday, April 7, at 9:00 EST/8:00 CST.
The Sixties. It was a happening. Flower Power. Mini Skirts. Pop Art. With sheer, shimmery pastels for lips and nails – seductive yet innocent. Cheek colors so sheer they looked shockingly nude. Luxuriant lashes (real and fake). Starry kaleidoscope eyes. Turn on. Tune in. Drop everything. It’s Mad Men time again.
Last year's collection was beautiful and glamorous. This year's looks even better - if that's possible.
The See-Thru Blush in Light Show ($50) provide sheer, sexy, creamy color, exactly what I love. Last year's Man Men blush was a cream blush; this year, it's powder. It captures the cheeky, fresh-faced, Sixties look perfectly. Estée Lauder suggests you add extra to your forehead, temples, and chin for more rosy lights.
Inspired by the rock concert light shows and see-through, cut-out fashions that made the Sixties swing.Compact case and carton are replicas of actual designs from Estée Lauder's Sixties-era collections.
The Rich Rich Lipstick in Pinkadelic ($30) offers a creamy, satin finish and smooth, rich lip color. The Pinkadelic shade captures the soft-lipped, sexy-innocent Sixties look perfectly. As with the other pieces in the collection, the lipstick case and carton are replicas of actual designs from Estée Lauder's Sixties-era collections. Pinkadelic was named after one of Estée Lauder's most popular Sixties lip formulas.
Last year, the lipstick was small - smaller than the usual size one would expect. I suspect this one will also be small. That won't stop me from purchasing this beautiful color.
The Mad Men Collection Nail Lacquer ($24) in Pink Paisley is a perfect ladylike shade that captures the sexy-innocent Sixties look perfectly.
Polished and chic. Smooth glossy color, long wear. Carton is a replica of an actual design from Estée Lauder's Sixties-era collections.
I'm so there. You can be too. You can pre-order the Mad Men Collection at Estée Lauder's Web site. Don't delay. This collection sold out quickly last year. Funny story, but I gave away my pieces from last year. I have so much makeup, and a reader really wanted them. No one will ever pry these from my hands.
