Kate Somerville Quench & Correct Plumping Lip Gloss and Restorative Lip Treatment

Your lips should keep your age a secret (your hands too). Kate Somerville has given us a reason to smile! Quench & Correct Plumping Lip Gloss and Restorative Lip Treatment ($29) is a dual-ended dynamo that performs triple duty. It moisturizes, replenishes, and makes your lips shine.

One end, Correct Restorative Lip Treatment with Hydra8, reduces the appearance of lip lines and eliminates dryness. The other end, Quench Plumping Lip Gloss, helps restore moisture for an instantly plumped, youthful look that’s bound to keep you beaming.

The Correct Restorative Treatment offers the following ingredients and benefits.
  • Dual peptides are designed to boost hydration and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • A special, trademarked skin-conditioning agent, Hydra8, is formulated to bind moisture to the lips for up to eight hours.
  • The treatment reduces the look of lines and cracks for a softer, smoother smile and a more comfortable feel.
Quench Plumping Lip Gloss adds a pretty, light pink shine along with beneficial ingredients.
  • Naturally derived peptides help to increase lip volume, creating the perfect pout without any stinging or odd sensations.
  • A moisture complex provides long-lasting hydration.
  • The gloss creates a long-lasting shine and a rosy glow.
You can use this duo as often as you want throughout the day for lips that look and feel good. Staying within the lip lines, apply the Correct Restorative Lip Treatment directly to the lips and follow with the Quench Plumping Lip Gloss. I love it! I bought mine at Neiman Marcus as soon as it arrived (exactly what you'd expect from a gooey lip lover), and I'm impressed. The lip treatment adds instant moisture and comfort. The lip gloss is the icing on the cake.

Why is the treatment so enriching? It's packed with hydrating ingredients beyond those trendy ones listed above. This is quite a list: soybean oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, macadamia seed oil, passion fruit seed oil, rice bran oil, açaí pulp oil, babassu seed oil, and manuka honey extract.

The treatment and lip gloss are flavored with a pleasant spearmint. I usually dislike flavors and fragrances in my lip products, but this one's familiar - and not at all obnoxious like some cheap lip products that are long on flavor and short on proven ingredients. I know it may not seem like a compliment, but I mean this in an extremely complimentary way. When I use the treatment before bed, I don't have to apply Vaseline to my lips to get the hydration I need. I love that!

I await more lip gloss shades. I think Kate's onto something!

I bought my Kate Somerville Quench & Correct Plumping Lip Gloss at Neiman Marcus. It should be available at all Kate Somerville counters now. You can also purchase it at Kate's Web site.

YSL Beauté Golden Gloss Collection Éclat d'Or Blanc (White Shimmering Gold) Collection for Holiday 2011

The YSL Beauté Holiday 2011 Collection has shipped to department stores, and there are some spectacular pieces. Since I'm a Golden Gloss gal, I was thrilled that the latest collection of three shimmering Golden Gloss ($30) shades had arrived. The collection, called Éclat d'Or Blanc (White Shimmering Gold) Collection for Holiday 2011, offers three choices.
  • Sparkling Silver (No. 46)
  • Sparkling Fuchsia (No. 47)
  • Sparkling Wine (No. 48)
Since the product arrived without testers, I decided to start with two, selecting Sparkling Silver and Sparkling Wine. The second I committed to purchasing Sparkling Wine, I applied it on my lips. I had been wearing a brown-leaning rose lip color, and the addition of the gloss made it magnificent.

Because it looks dark in the tube, Sparking Wine is a little hard to photograph. It appears to be a vibrant, glittering, royal purple. Sparking Silver is well described by its name. I love both shades. One adds color, while the other adds a translucent silver sparkle to my lips.

Sparkling Silver is similar to Chanel's Liaison from the limited-edition Les Deux Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer Duo ($55) for Holiday 2011. The shade is almost clear, but it will make any lip color pop with its glittering shine. Unlike Liaison, the shimmer in Sparking Silver is all silver. Liaison provides multi-colored sparkle.

Shimmering Wine is grape/purple in the tube, but if you have any pink/rose in your lips and wear it without lipstick underneath, it will appear to be a sheer grape-toned rose on your lips. It will add a subtle grape to any lip color you wear underneath. When I applied it, everyone at the counter had one of those "Oooh, nice!" moments. I am thrilled with it.

I've been wearing YSL's Golden Gloss for years. "Worth its weight in gold," this gorgeous gloss dresses my lips in a sophisticated, high-shine shimmer that’s spectacular. Sparkling 24K gold flecks (0.2%) create a mirror-like effect for guaranteed glamour, while a complex of nourishing oils protects and moisturizes for optimal comfort and hydration. It feels fabulous. Golden gloss is scented with a subtle hint of mango that doesn't bother me at all. I think it tastes good. That's saying a lot since I normally dislike lip colors with an overt fragrance or taste.

I haven't seen the latest YSL colors on the YSL Beauté Web site yet, but since they are arriving at YSL counters, they should be widely available soon. I bought mine at Neiman Marcus. These three beauties are definitely worth a look-see. I want to see a tester of Sparkling Fuchsia. I have a strong suspicion that once I test it (or see a swatch), I'll need it.

My Makeover by Fernando Cadavid, Chantecaille Global Makeup Artist

Last Saturday, I was greeted at 10:00 am sharp at Neiman Marcus Tysons Galleria by Fernando Cadavid and Alicia Cortes, one an "old Chantecaille friend," one new. Alicia is the resident Chantecaille specialist at Neiman Marcus Tysons. Fernando is a Global Makeup Artist for Chantecaille and was visiting Chantecaille counters in the DC area last week to show us how to look "Chantecaille gorgeous."

Fernando and I spent a lot of time chatting. I am always interested in the path talented artists take into their field, and I've learned that it's seldom linear or expected. I've never asked someone how they came to be a makeup artist (or how they because a fragrance expert) and heard the answer, "I went to school to learn the skills."

When Fernando was an undergraduate at USC, like all undergrads, he had to study electives. He was majoring in architecture. On a whim, he selected special effects makeup and loved it. Then he studied editorial, cinematic, and stage makeup, and he felt the lure. However, he stuck with his chosen career path and earned a bachelor's degree and a master's in architecture. From there, he went to work in his field.

One night, while working overtime on a project he wasn't enjoying, his mother called from the East Coast. In frustration, he told her he hated the project - he even hated his job. His wonderful, supportive mother told him to make a change, reminding him that he was young and it was never too late to follow his passions. Two weeks later, his contract came up for renewal, and he quit - not knowing what he would do next.

One night he went to a dinner with a friend, who brought along one of his own friends, Sue Devitt. Can you see where this story is going? Sue was sure Fernando was a makeup artist and that she has seen him working somewhere. They talked about his background and passions. She was making a personal appearance at Barneys that week and asked Fernando to come along and try his hand supporting her as a freelancer. He did, and his career as a makeup artist was launched.

While working for Sue, Fernando started to make connections. Celebrities like Heather Thomas recognized his talent and connected him with her friends (isn't that generous, sharing your makeup artist?). Fernando's career grew because he's really great. He became a successful Los Angeles makeup artist, always grateful to Sue for the start.

One day, about five years ago, he met a Chantecaille account executive who recognized his overwhelming talent and talked to him about a position with Chantecaille. Long story short, he joined Chantecaille and has been with the company since. That's how an architect became a famous makeup artist!

How did he make me look this good? I took notes. Fernando started with Nano Gold Firming Treatment and Biodynamic Lifting Cream to prep my skin. Then, he selected the new Classic Palette for color, starting with my eyes. He used the new Hematite Gel Liner Pencil and Faux Cils Longest Lash Mascara in Black. For concealer, he chose Total Concealer in Alabaster. I think he used Future Skin foundation in Alabaster. He applied St. Barth's Compact Soleil bronzer and the blush in the New Classic Palette. He enhanced my eyebrows with Ash Blonde Brow Definer and finished with lip color: Tea Rose Lip Chic topped by Brilliant Gloss in Sweet. Every item was applied perfectly. You can find all of these beautiful products at Chantecaille's Web site. Sweet is a shade that was just brought back, but I had it from its last appearance. I have a fully stocked Chantecaille makeup wardrobe, the true sign of a Chantecaille groupie. The moment something new is introduced, I buy it.

As you've already read, I went off and had my hair styled by Brandon Martinez, so we took my photos after that session. I was feeling very special. Makeup and hair by the pros! All that work (and a lot of chatting) took 2.5 hours. No wonder Hollywood celebrities spend all day preparing for the red carpet!

I left my new friend Fernando showing Natalie Callado some great eye shadow colors for her eyes. Natalie is the assistant manager of the beauty department, and I asked her to help us with a "live shot." Fernando's next appointment had not arrived at that point. She was a good sport - and looked great.

There were red roses on the floor at the RéVive counter, and I wanted a photo to remember the Artbox 9, Dr. Gregory Brown's appearance (which I will feature this week), and my Chantecaille makeover. Kathy Shoreman helped me, snapping this photo before I left the store. It was a wonderful day!

If you ever get the chance to sit in Fernando's chair - and I'm sure you will because he travels constantly - take it. He'll give you a look that you can recreate to be "Chantecaille gorgeous" every day. If you like Twitter, you can keep up with Fernando @ChantecailleArt. There is an Events page at Chantecaille's Web site. Once it's updated (it was scheduled through this weekend), check to see if there's a Chantecaille event scheduled to occur in your area sometime soon.

How can you enter to win this contest (legally a sweepstakes - see below)? All you really have to do is leave a comment on this feature. After you comment here, feel free to send me an e-mail at bestthingsinbeautycontests@gmail.com and identify your comment. You can never be too careful about sharing an e-mail address you care about on a blog, so feel free to follow this step (an alternative is to code your e-mail, e.g., myname at gmail dot com, in your comment).

You can earn extra entries. Follow this blog (through an e-mail subscription or though one of the many Google readers - see sidebar at right) to earn a second entry. If you are a follower, it would help me tally entries if you tell me how you follow. You don't have to follow to enter. I want everyone to have a chance, but I also want to reward my followers. I must be able to track this entry.

You can earn a third entry by tweeting this contest. You must include "@BTiBeauty" (without the quotes) and the contest title in your tweet. I will tweet the contest this evening, and you can simply retweet it to earn that second entry. Only one tweet will be counted as an entry. I appreciate multiple tweets, but it's not necessary.

The deadline for entries will be Saturday, October 29, at midnight. The next day, I will use a random number generator (random.org) to select the winner. I will e-mail the winner on Sunday. The winner will have 48 hours to reply to my message and provide a shipping address. After 48 hours, the prize will be forfeited, and another winner will be selected. Make sure to check your e-mail - and look in your spam folder - when the contest ends.

This contest is open to anyone anywhere. Here are the terms. I will carefully pack and ship the prize (as I always do). I cannot insure the prize for overseas shipment - it's amazingly expensive to do so because of the way I have to send insured mail. If it's lost or stolen in transit, I won't be able to replace it with another. I'll do my best on this end; let's see if your mail service does right by you on the other end if we have an overseas winner. Lately, my shipping luck has improved significantly.

Good luck!

Legal notice: Apparently, there are "legalities" related to sweepstakes, contests in which the winner is drawn at random. The law requires many official rules, and the legalese on blog giveaways must include them. For those who love too much information, here are more rules for this "contest" - those that aren't stated above. In the future, I will probably publish a page just for sweepstakes rules. Until then...
  • No purchase is necessary - you can't buy things here anyhow!
  • Entrants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • The number of eligible entries received will determine the odds of winning.
  • Should one occur, a dispute or mistake will be handled to ensure the winner is reasonably happy.
  • I will publish the name the winner used in the comment required to enter. Full names not disclosed in the comment will not be publicized.
  • The winner releases Best Things in Beauty for all liability by providing a mailing address. That means you can't blame me if you don't like it or you break your leg getting it out of your mailbox.
  • You can always find Charlestongirl by e-mail at bestthingsinbeauty@gmail.com.
  • This contest is regulated in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Void where prohibited by law.
  • Can you even believe my need to publish all these rules?

Chanel Les Deux Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer Duo for Holiday 2011

Chanel has packaged the season's essential lip gloss pairing in its limited-edition Les Deux Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer Duo ($55) for Holiday 2011. The best-selling Spark, described by Chanel as a golden berry, and Liaison, a sparkling translucent shade that Chanel said is only available in this set (see Paula's comment), are joined with a mini Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Definer in Nude and a pencil sharpener in Chanel's chic black patent makeup bag. The bag comes packaged in a luxurious gold box that proclaims "Chanel" on the front. The duo is an elegant gift.

Spark can be deceiving in the tube, just as it is in Chanel's photo above or at first glance in the store. It is not rusty, orange, or brown. It's a clean rose pink, exactly the way it appears in the tube in my photo at left and in the swatches below. You could call the shade golden berry, as Chanel does, but the "berry" word brings to my mind a shade that has a touch of plum in it. If you think strawberry or raspberry, you'll be on the right track.

The two gloss shades are extremely appealing. Berry can be worn alone or used to top other shades to add a gorgeous rose glow. Liaison is almost clear, but it will make any lip color pop.

My photos were taken in full sun. Liaison is shown at the top of my arm, and Spark is below. Can you believe I hesitated before I bought this gift set? Even though it's a great value - and I knew I would keep it for myself - I wasn't sure I wanted another clear lip gloss. Now that I've played with Liaison and seen the multidimensional, glistening sparkle it adds to any lipstick, I'm glad I bought it.

Consider that each gloss, if purchased alone, would cost you $28.50, and you'll realize the gift set offers a nice bonus with the mini lip liner (a perfect size for your handbag) and a sharpener you can use with all your Chanel pencils. The classy Chanel makeup bag could house the full set in your handbag, ensuring you've always got a perfect lip look within reach. I think it's a nice set. It would be hard to give away, but if you are feeling generous, I'm sure your gift recipient will love it.

Chanel's holiday gift sets are shown at this Chanel link, where you can purchase them online. I bought mine at Neiman Marcus. I hear the Miroir Double Facettes is a hot seller.

LOFT Georgetown Grand Opening

Today, I attended the grand opening event for the new Georgetown LOFT with Lucky magazine. There was a DJ, refreshments (the guy with the sparkling wine kept ignoring me, so I had to get a steak and cheese sandwich in Georgetown before I left - I could have staved off the hunger with wine!), and one of Lucky’s professional photographer's taking pictures of customers in their LOFT looks in front of this spectacular backdrop. One of Lucky’s stylists and local style maven Lacey Maffettone (shown above) were there to help anyone who was camera shy.

Red and orange were the shades of the day (two of three local bloggers showed us that), but that didn't stop me from buying a nice little black dress and a couple of amazing belts. Here are a few tips from Lucky and LOFT for looking effortlessly stylish and camera-ready.
  • Fashion Statement - Build your look starting with a fashion-forward piece, perhaps a neck warmer to accentuate in a bold, but soft way.
  • Mixed Media - The art of layering and mixing prints can be tricky, so keep it simple, pairing monochromatic patterns or stripes on stripes.
  • Subtle Shine - Add a metallic or colorful accessory for just the right amount of impact.
  • Beyond Black - A slim-fitting pant is a wardrobe staple. Give this season's vibrant offerings a try. Add a colorful skinny belt to personalize a wardrobe workhorse.
  • Finishing Touch - Your camera-ready look won't be complete without a killer pair of shoes.

Even though I may have been the oldest in the crowd, I had fun. I can't wait to wear my new figure-hugging LBD. I'll pair it with a snazzy scarf for my next photo op.

LOFT Georgetown is at 1239 Wisconsin Ave, NW, Washington, DC. It's a nice store, perfectly located. If you live in the DC area, check it out.

Brandon Martinez and His B. The Product Hair Care

Last weekend, Brandon Martinez made a two-day working trip to Neiman Marcus Tysons Galleria, where his fabulous hair care products are sold. Instead of doing "the usual thing," talking to women about their hair and concerns and recommending the best products for them, Brandon brought along his tools and another stylist and did blow-drys. Was he a popular guy! Women who saw the magic he was working lined up for a chance to sit in his chair. I was one of the lucky ones. I had an appointment, so at noon Brandon started to give me a jazzy look.

He never asked how I like my hair. I found it interesting that he instinctively knew how it should look. His guess was great; I loved the end result. We all thought the front looked good? Look at the back! I'm glad everyone in the store noticed so that I could give my camera to someone to get a picture of his masterpiece.

Brandon Martinez is the Los Angeles-based celebrity hair expert and stylist behind the fresh and original hair-care line, B. The Product. Born in California, Martinez spent his early twenties surfing and pursuing acting. He appeared in the 1997 feature film The Debut. After looking into expanding into other creative outlets, Martinez discovered his talent for hair and refined his skills under famed Luis Licari's careful guidance.

In 2004, Martinez appeared on Bravo's hit shows, Blow Out and Salon Diaries, Style Network's, Split Ends, TLC's LA Ink, and NBC's Biggest Loser. Martinez quickly made a name for himself and with the shows' success. He was recruited by Joel Warren and Edward Tricomi (of the celebrated Warren and Tricomi Salon) to open their West Hollywood location. With the successful opening, Martinez continued his dedication and longed to put the creativity back in hair-care products. Concerned that hair-care lines were not focused on the important day-to-day hair problems that men and women had, Martinez created his own professional treatment and styling line, and B. The Product was introduced. No matter what else Martinez is doing, his true passion and love is hair.

Martinez boasts a notable client roster that ranges from New York society elite, including Wendi Murdoch, and supermodels such as Elle Macpherson. Now you can add to his fan club a lot of women in the DC area!

You can see his products at this link. I bought several that day at Neiman Marcus, including Dry Cleaned, his dry shampoo, which he uses sparingly to add volume (genius!); Shampoo Perfected; and Conditioned Perfected. They all smell great. Brandon said he wants them to smell clean and nice while customers are using them and then have the fragrance dissipate. That's perfect for me! They are also very reasonably priced.

He said all of his clients want to look young and sexy. If that translates into fabulous, who could disagree? I watched him (hip and young himself) spend as much time working on side and back looks as he did on the hair the frames the face. I liked his 360-degree approach to styling.

You can find B. The Products at Neiman Marcus stores and on Brandon's Web site. I think you'll love his maintenance, treatment, and styling products. I do!

Before I left, we decided to clown for the camera, holding one of his products, of course. Brandon is fun! If you live in Southern California, go see him! If he makes an appearance at a Neiman Marcus near you, make an appointment. I guarantee you will love the way you look when you hop out of his chair.
