OCuSOFT Lid Scrub Eyelid Cleanser for Sensitive Eyes - And Everyone Else

This feature is a three-peat. I try to re-post it every couple of years, and since I don't have new photos tonight (basically because of inclement weather (including clouds, wind, and rain), I can present the best eyelid cleanser I've ever used. The best. I feel like this feature is a public service announcement.

As much as I adore my little raccoons outside, I don't want to look like them. That makes eye makeup removers a necessity. Even the best facial cleansers won't always take off that stubborn mascara "run" under my eyes.

One product I use regularly is a bit unusual, and it's very effective: OCuSOFT Lid Scrub Eyelid Cleanser (prices for a box are all over the place - $15.99 at CVS). These individually wrapped, moistened pads are fabulous, not only for removing eye makeup, but also for exfoliating the tender skin around your eyes. They were recommended to me by my opthamologist years ago, and I have used them ever since. I buy mine at CVS or Costco. I highly recommend these pads. You won't find a more effective eye makeup remover. Plus, they do double duty for anyone with sensitive eyes, blepharatis, dry skin, or any other condition that makes your eyelids peel.

Imagine wearing contacts and having microscopic pieces of skin tissue falling into them during the day. Enough said? Blepharitis is an eye condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the eyelid, and more of us have it than you would imagine. OCuSOFT Lid Scrub Pads continuously and gently exfolate the eyelid to prevent inflammation and its concomitant issues.

These pads are recommended by doctors, including mine, for eyelid cleansing to remove oil, debris, and desquamated skin (flakes) that may lead to eye irritation. They remove oil and debris associated with dry eyes and promote comfort for contact lens wearers. Plus, they remove every last vestige of eye makeup.

I never have raccoon eyes after I use the pads, and all traces of mascara and liner are history. One pad suffices for both eyes. Because they are individually wrapped, they are extremely convenient/ideal for travel. Formulated without alcohol, fragrance, or dye, they can be used by everyone.

I cannot recommend OCuSOFT Lid Scrub pads highly enough. As I mentioned, I've written about them before (I should buy stock), and when I mention them in features, someone always asks about them. They are easy to find, inexpensive, and the best makeup remover you'll ever find. Not only that, they are good for you.

Don't buy the ones you have to mix. It's faster and much more convenient to purchase the pre-moistened pads. Also, the "plus" ones are a bit harsh. Stick with the ones that come in the dark blue box.

Check out the OCuSOFT Web site to learn more. OCuSOFT Lid Scrub Eyelid Cleanser is one of my beauty secrets. I think I've converted more than a few of you.

HydroPeptide Cleansing Gel - Another Regular in My Routine

You asked about the skin care I use on a regular basis. HydroPeptide's Cleansing Gel ($44) is my go-to cleanser these days. Why? I have been very impressed with every HydroPeptide product I have used, and it was a gift from the company. I started using it and kept using it. I've grown fond of it.

It's dubbed a gentle cleanse, tone, and makeup remover product. In one step, this very gentle, anti-aging gel cleanser removes makeup, cleanses, tones, and "defies age." I'm not sure I can say it defies age, but it helps hold it back. I'm conservative about such claims for cleansers, which only make contact with the skin for a short time.

This nicely, clean, citrus-scented, cleansing powerhouse contains peptides to improve elasticity, sebacic acid to keep skin clear, and hyaluronic acid to maintain hydration.Three powerhouse ingredients are combined to improve your skin for the few moments they come in contact with it.

HydroPeptide's own blog summed up the ingredients nicely. What is the science behind this overachieving face wash?  Trylagen and Argireline are two peptides that work to protect and repair collagen networks by enabling skin to look and act younger.  Trylagen minimizes wrinkle depth by improving skin’s elasticity, preventing collagen loss and strengthening the collagen network.  Argireline reduces the appearance of expression lines by inhibiting pre-synaptic muscle contractions.  A clearer complexion results from sebacic acid, an ingredient that prevents blemishes by regulating sebum excretion.  A five percent lactic acid concentration is just enough to provide skin sloughing benefits without irritating sensitive types.  Witch hazel and geranium are natural astringents that tighten pores and contribute to a shine-free complexion.  The finishing touch?  Amazingly hydrating sodium hyaluronate (nature's sponge) prevents dryness and instantly plumps the skin for a youthful appearance.

Here's how HydroPeptide stacks up its benefits.
  • Battles the appearance of wrinkles by improving elasticity and smoothness, preventing collagen loss, and reinforcing the collagen network
  • Thoroughly removes makeup and eye makeup (even waterproof) without irritation, stripping skin hydration or breaking fragile lashes
  • Dissolves dirt and oil while normalizing overactive oil production
  • Fights breakout-causing bacteria to keep your skin looking clear
I can testify to its eye makeup removal qualities. However, I still do a quick swipe under my lower lashes with an eye makeup remover after cleansing. I don't have the patience while cleansing my face before bed to concentrate on the mascara melt under my lower lashes, and I don't want to rub or move my fingers around my eyes any more than needed. Yes, I wash my face with my hands. Cleansing Gel removes my other makeup easily and quickly.

This Cleansing Gel, despite is benefits to women with oily and normal skin, works perfectly on my dry skin because it doesn't strip moisture from the skin. It feels nourishing, whether it is or not. Cleansers are on our skin for such a short time, it's most important to me that that they cleanse well without stripping the moisture from my skin. Any other effects are a bonus, and you can bet those peptides are working for those 1-2 minutes.

I've been using the same 6.76-ounce container for a long time. I need so little each night, it's remarkable. I am quite taken with the product and will buy another when I squeeze the last drops from the flip-top dispenser. I think I'll feel disappointed that day.

You can find HydroPeptide's Cleansing Gel at Hydropeptide's Web site and other online sources (DermStore, SkinStore, and other sources). Google it for your best price. There you have it - another regular in my skin-care routine

Natura Bissé Diamond White Rich Luxury Cleanse

Natura Bissé's Diamond White Rich Luxury Cleanse ($135) is perfectly named. Using this luminous cleansing cream is a luxury.

The luxurious and rich cleansing micro-emulsion eliminates impurities and every type of makeup (including waterproof makeup) while illuminating the skin. Exquisite and silky, it has a lovely, mild lavender fragrance - perfect for before bed. It does not strip the skin’s own natural oils. In fact, it makes my skin feel softer.

The delicious formulation is based on emollient ingredients derived from natural cane sugar and soothes and hydrates the skin. The ingredients include pomegranate extract, micro-emulsion glycerin oil, vitamin F, vitamin E, and α-Bisabol. The Pomegranate extract, rich in ellagic acid, provides instant luminosity to the skin. It's paraben-free too. I love the fact that Natura Bissé doesn't make ludicrous anti-aging claims for this cleanser. Cleansers are on your face for such a short time, they aren't going to absorb and help you shed 10 years.

A complete and refreshing cleansing ritual in just one step that is ideal for eyes and face.
  • Innovative makeup removing formula for face and eyes
  • Helps keep the skin hydrated
  • Helps keep skin feeling soft and looking luminous
  • A unique and multipurpose product that effectively removes all traces of makeup
You should use Diamond White Rich Luxury Cleanse morning and night, but I only use it at night. It comes in a jar, which is unwieldy for me in the shower. I need to have a pump container there. What impresses me the most about it - beyond the feel, consistency, and experience - is its effectiveness. It's one of the few cleansers that is ultra-gentle, but still removes every last trace of my eye makeup. Most cleansers leave me with mascara runs under my eyes, and I have to quickly remove them with eye makeup remover - an extra step that isn't time-consuming, but one that should be unnecessary.

Here are Natura Bissé's directions for use, embellished by yours truly.
  1. Using a spatula, apply the product on the palm of your clean and dry hand. Gently massage on the face, neck and décolleté, concentrating on the eye area (to remove eye makeup).
  2. With moistened hands, massage desired areas once again. The product immediately transforms into an exquisite emulsion. It seems to melt from a gel to a liquid.
  3. Remove the product using Natura Bissé cleansing sponges moistened in warm water. Or you could do what I do. Wash it off using your hands and water. Rinse repeatedly until it "feels" removed.
I know it's pricey, but a jar lasts forever. You don't need much for one cleansing. Diamond White Rich Luxury Cleanse is a treat you owe yourself. Is it necessary? No, you could use Cetaphil. You just won't feel like a queen.

Bobbi Brown Sheer Color Cheek Tint in Sheer Coral Giveaway Contest - Plus Le Métier de Beauté Gift

Sheer Color Cheek Tint was one of my all-time favorites from Bobbi Brown. I must have purchased every color. I have a Sheer Coral Cheek Tint to give away, a little treasure I found at the Estée Lauder Company Store.

Sheer Coral isn't coral. It's a warm pink that anyone should be able to wear. The cream blush glides on easily, and with just a little blending adds a sheer, natural glow to the cheeks. I was smitten with all of mine and still use them.

I have one to give away. Along with this prize, the winner of this week's giveaway will receive a special Le Métier de Beauté Daily Renew Crème Cleanser. The cleanser was a gift with purchase at Neiman Marcus, and I have one to give away, courtesy of Michael Reinhardt.

I have one set, the Cheek Tint plus the Daily Renew Crème Cleanser, to give away. How can you enter to win this giveaway contest (technically a sweepstakes)? Just leave a comment on this feature (not in another BTiB post). After you comment here, feel free to send me an e-mail at bestthingsinbeautycontests@gmail.com (the contest address, not my "personal" e-mail) and identify your comment. You can never be too careful about sharing an e-mail address you care about on a blog, so feel free to follow this step (an alternative is to code your e-mail, e.g., myname at gmail dot com, in your comment). Please make sure I have your e-mail. If I can't notify you, you can't win - even if your number is drawn. I can't believe the number of entrants I haven't been able to find in the past.

You can earn extra entries. Follow this blog (through an e-mail subscription, GFC, or though one of the many Google readers - see sidebar at right) to earn a second entry. If you are a follower, it would help me tally entries if you tell me in your comment how you follow. You don't have to follow to enter. I want everyone to have a chance, but I also want to reward my followers. I must be able to track this entry.

You can earn a third entry by tweeting this contest. You must include "@BTiBeauty" (without the quotes) and the contest title in your tweet. Remember, tweet the contest title - if you don't, that entry won't count. I will tweet the contest early this evening, and you can simply retweet it to earn that second entry - if that's easier.

The deadline for entries will be Saturday, September 8, at midnight. The next morning, I will use a random number generator (random.org) to select the winner. I will e-mail the winner on Sunday morning. The winner will have 48 hours to reply to my message and provide a shipping address. After 48 hours, the prize will be forfeited, and another winner will be selected. Make sure to check your e-mail - and look in your spam folder - when the contest ends.

This contest is open to anyone anywhere. Here are the terms. I will carefully pack and ship the prize (as I always do). I cannot insure the prize for overseas shipment - it's amazingly expensive to do so because of the way I have to send insured mail. If it's lost or stolen in transit, I may not be able to replace it with another prize just like it. I'll do my best on this end; let's see if your mail service does right by you on the other end if we have an overseas winner.

For all the legalese related to this contest, please see the Contests/Sweepstakes page at the top of the blog. Good luck!

AVEENO Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads

AVEENO's Clear Complexion Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads (about $6) are (dual-textured cleansing pads pre-moistened with natural soy and salicylic acid, a blemish-fighting ingredient to help clear and prevent breakouts and help improve the skin's clarity and even out tone and texture. These pads are textured on one side to gently exfoliate and smooth on the other side to lift way dirt, oil, and makeup that can clog pores and cause breakouts. They are hypoallergenic, oil-free, and soap-free - gentle enough for everyday use and sensitive skin.

Because I'm an AVEENO Ambassador, AVEENO sent me these lovely cleansing pads to try. I think cleansing pads are the best thing ever for times fatigue makes even before-bed or early morning cleansing a dreaded chore. Salicylic acid, one of the ingredients in AVEENO's Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads, and I don't get along, so I asked a friend at work - let's call her Goldie - to test them for me. Goldie's review follows.

I met Charlestongirl at work last year and we became great friends. She brought perfume samples in her first week at work (wouldn’t you know it?) (Note: This is not what made us friends, but it helped.) Despite being 29 (at the time) and generally beauty-illiterate, especially when it comes to the likes of Bottega Veneta and other fine brands, I graciously took what she had to offer. Lucky for me she’s never stopped.

After seven months, I’ve accumulated a small box of perfume samples, some make-up, a pair of By Terry purple flip flops, and two faux snakeskin-textured Neiman Marcus totes, pink and gold, that I adore and use for everything. The latest freebie was perfect for me - AVEENO Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads.

These things are awesome! I have struggled with acne my whole life, and although I’m pretty much in the clear now, this summer has ignited a real comeback. That is how I know these cleansing pads really work. The packaging touts self-foaming, and that was the first thing I noticed. You only need one pad (no water required), and it takes only a couple of swipes to work up a lather - way more lather than my usual face wash. The pads themselves have a beautiful, clean, and light aromatic smell like all AVEENO products, which is a big reason I buy them. What I loved most about them was the dual-textured surfaces. After weeks of using these, my skin feels clean, extremely soft, and surprisingly renewed, which I attribute to the tiny bumps on the pads that scrub away old skin to bring new skin to the surface. The best part is they’re quick and easy to use when you come home from a night out and want nothing more than to fall into bed.

I highly recommend AVEENO's Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads to anyone with adult acne, oily skin, or who appreciates a mini-facial. I did some research on where you can find these, and they seem to be everywhere: Walgreens, Target, the usual suspects. I’m also dying to try the other products in the Clear Complexion line that I found on the Aveeno Web site (Ed. note: Goldie has them now).

Has anyone else tried this product or any of the other Clear Complexion items? What did you think? Also, I’m looking for some good age-defying products, so please let me know if you can recommend any that work really well. I am 30 now!

John Masters Organics Linden Blossom Face Crème Cleanser

I've been meaning to tell you about John Masters Organics Linden Blossom Face Creme Cleanser ($22) for a long time. I'm on my second bottle - a clear indication that it's a keeper.

John Masters Organics calls this non-foaming face wash the gentlest cleanser available. The softening properties of rose and linden blossom essential oils are mixed with a light facial crème to gently clean away dirt and make-up. Foraha oil helps to repair the skin and promote cell growth - perfect for aging skin. Ylang ylang nourishes the skin, while radish root extract defends against environmental pollutants.

This cleanser, designed for dry and mature skin, is made with 13 certified-organic ingredients that include the key ingredients and their benefits below.
  • Rose flower oil - treats dry and sensitive skin
  • Linden blossom - softens and soothes skin
  • Ginseng - toning, revitalizing
  • Ylang ylang - antiseptic, nourishing
  • Radish root - new all-natural preservative that protects against harmful bacteria
  • Aloe vera leaf juice
  • Sunflower seed oil
Why do I love this cleanser so much?
  • It works.
  • It's extremely mind and perfect for sensitive skin. You can even leave it on your face for up to five minutes while you are showering for extra moisturizing effects.
  • I love the convenient pump-dispenser. I hate fumbling with container caps in the shower and much prefer pumps.
  • It has a divine, natural, very light floral fragrance.
  • It's organic, so naturally it contains no parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, artificial colors, or other bad actors.
  • No animals suffered to test it.
I use it during my morning shower each day. Since I often use John Masters Organics shampoos and conditioners, I'm starting to associate morning with John Masters. You can purchase John Masters Organics skin care, hair care, and body care collections at his Web site and at Beautorium. I highly recommend them.

iS CLINICAL Cream Cleanser

iS CLINICAL Cream Cleanser ($48) has an extraordinary story. Have you ever thought about how women serving in the military take care of their skin and basic beauty needs when they are at war? I hadn't given it much thought. Then I found out about the story behind INNOVATIVE SKINCARE's iS CLINICAL Cream Cleanser.

Life for women in the military can be rough; simple luxuries easily slip away. Third Infantry Division soldier Linda Lee said, "..You shouldn't have to feel dirty, like you can't cleanse your face whenever you'd like." Soldiers don't always have access to water for bathing, so Lee wrote INNOVATIVE SKINCARE requesting a solution.

"It was the most unusual request we've had, yet also very exciting," said founder and COO Alec Call. INNOVATIVE SKINCARE had been supporting Stars and Stripes, a group that provides celebrity entertainment tours to boost morale among military members. CEO Bryan Johns added, "We very much believe in supporting our troops." Call and Johns were excited after hearing from Linda Lee. "It was a new way we could give back to our men and women serving in the military."

After significant research, they were able to launch iS CLINICAL Cream Cleanser, a rich botanical-based cream cleanser that removes makeup and doesn't need water to be rinsed away. INNOVATIVE SKINCARE presented Lee with the first tube off the production line, and Glow Medspa and Beauty Boutique pampered her with a facial and a makeover.

iS CLINICAL Cream Cleanser isn't just for troops serving abroad. It's for all of us who want a gentle cleanser that removes makeup effectively without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Here are some of its features.
  • Deep cleans skin and pores without drying
  • Thorough, but gentle, eye makeup removal
  • Can be wiped off or rinsed with water
  • Completely non-irritating to the eyes and skin
  • Leaves a silky-smooth finish
  • Prepares skin for makeup application
  • Compatible with all skin types
I have been using iS CLINICAL Cream Cleanser since early August when I felt privileged to receive a tube from INNOVATIVE SKINCARE. I love it! It's creamy and rich, and I only need a pea-sized dab in my palm to cleanse my face and neck. I do rinse it off, but not thoroughly. When I leave a film of this wonderful product on my face, I feel extra-hydrated. Plus, there's no reason to remove it completely. The ingredients are good for our skin. Safflower seed oil, glycerin, squalane, coconut oil, and algae extract ahnfeltia concinna (antixoidant and emollient) combine with other ingredients to pamper the skin.

Both young and old can use iS CLINICAL Cream Cleanser. It's equally loved by those who suffer from oily skin and those of us who are dry. I find that pretty amazing. Even the tube is well-designed, with a twist cap that turns to dispense the product. It sits on its cap securely, meaning I don't knock it over in my relatively small bathroom.

I've been using two other INNOVATIVE SKINCARE products, which I adore. I'll be featuring those soon. I like the company, and I like its products. To find out more about them, you can visit the Web site. Make sure to read about the science and the skin conditions that interest you.

INNOVATIVE SKINCARE is sold primarily at the practices of cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists, but the products are also available online. After I tried samples of the YOUTH Complex eye and face serums, provided by the company, I purchased more from SkinCareRx, a Best Things in Beauty advertiser. You can find a complete list of sources at this link.

Kate Somerville Detox Daily Cleanser Giveaway Contest

Congratulations to Harshleen!

By popular request on Twitter, a skin-care giveaway...

Kate Somerville's Detox Daily Cleanser ($32) will give your skin a clean start by detoxifying and restoring clarity to your complexion. It's billed as clean perfection for those who want to fight acne, even the occasional blemish, and treat their skin to an anti-aging cleanser.

Detox Daily Cleanser removes impurities without irritating or over-drying stressed skin. It fights the bacteria that cause acne, while stabilizing oil production to counter future breakouts. The salicylic acid takes care of bacteria. The cleanser includes among its ingredients phytic acid to help fade post-acne scars and reduce inflammation. It's also packed with soothing ingredients, such as aloe, and tea tree leaf oil.

Kate Somerville's products have become a favorite of mine over the last year or so. I like everything about them. If you have any oiliness in your skin or struggle to keep it free of the gunk (technical term) that exacerbates breakouts, you will love Detox Daily Cleanser.

How can you enter to win? Here's the "fine print."

I'm hoping her prize gets to her unscathed.

Good luck!

Chantecaille Rice and Geranium Foaming Cleanser

Attention makeup fans! You need a nice cleanser to remove that makeup before bed, a mandatory step in your beauty routine. Even if you fall asleep in your clothes, even if you didn't finish your chores, you must remove your makeup and prepare your skin for sleep - a time when it breathes, relaxes, refreshes, and regenerates. Why not have a luxurious experience while you perform this daily ritual? Chantecaille has just the cleanser for you!

I rotate through a few favorite cleansers every month. They come, they go. Chantecaille's Rice and Geranium Foaming Cleanser ($55) is one of the cleansers that never goes. It's always on my bathroom counter.

Rice and Geranium Foaming Cleanser leaves my skin unusually smooth, thanks to the exceptional softening and extremely gentle exfoliating properties of rice bran. The other ingredients? Geranium, an antibacterial agent traditionally used for healing nicks and cuts, helps stimulate the lymphatic system (something aestheticians do while performing facials). Seaweed aids in the regulation of sebum production. Soybean, green tea, and olive leaves are antioxidants that protect the skin from free-radical damage.

This cream cleanser turns to a thick, foamy cream on my face, cleansing effectively without stripping the moisture I guard. In fact, I think my skin is more hydrated when I finish. My face always feels and looks great after using this divine cleanser. The teeny tiny rice bran in it exfoliates very lightly, ensuring that my makeup and any gunk left behind from the day goes down the drain. It's remarkably easy to wash off. My cleansing routine with Rice and Geranium Foaming Cleanser is a fast task - nice at the end of a long day.

The cleanser serves as an aromatherapy treat too! Geranium has wonderful balancing properties for the mind and body, while orange blossom eases tension and stress. The scent is relaxing and extremely pleasant. Who would have thought washing one's face could be fun?

You can purchase Rice and Geranium Foaming Cleanser at Chantecaille's Web site and Chantecaille counters. It's not new, so you won't have to call ahead.

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and a Coming Attraction

Did you know that Fresh Soy Face Cleanser ($38) is Neiman Marcus's best-selling cleanser? I didn't until I started talking with a Fresh representative who had given me one. It was also a Neiman Marcus Beauty Award Finalist in 2010, voted by customers.

I told one of my "Fresh friends," Alyson O'Brien (remember Alyson? she wrote a guest feature for us), about burning my lips recently with glycolic acid and that I had used only pure, gentle products on my face the week after. I didn't want to apply anything that would exacerbate the burn and accompanying pain. My Fresh Soy Cleanser had arrived recently, and it seemed like the perfect choice for removing makeup at night and washing my face in the morning shower. I knew it was mild, so it has been my go-to cleanser since. I love it!

Soy Face Cleanser has a unique, multifunctional, soap-free formula that promotes a pure, clean, healthy complexion. Ideal for all skin types, this ultra-gentle face wash contains nourishing amino acids, rich soy proteins, and soothing botanicals to hydrate, calm, and tone. The lightweight, natural cucumber- and rose-scented formula has a refreshing and cooling effect (good for the dufus who her burned her skin). It effectively removes every last trace of my makeup, even around my eyes - no raccoons here (inside at least)! It even conditions your eyelashes.

Fresh’s unique crème-gel formula won’t strip the skin of its essential nutrients. It leaves my face feeling hydrated and clean. Because it's safe for use around the eye area, I apply and cleanse with abandon, which is how I got myself into trouble with the glycolic acid. No worries - Fresh wouldn't hurt us.

The ingredients of this French-made cleanser contain pure, organic extracts of rose and cornflower, mallow, and aloe vera, cucumber, and ginseng. Then, there's the soy. Soybean extract is a valuable protein that protects the skin and improves texture and resiliency. Soybeans provide amino acids that are essential in helping the skin to retain moisture, maintain elasticity, and preserve a smooth appearance. They contain a high concentration of isoflavonoids, a type of polyphenol that exhibits antioxidant properties. Soybean germ extract is derived from the soybean; after the hulls and oil are collected, the remaining flakes, which represent this valuable protein-rich extract, are crushed into a fine powder and used to make this soy extract in the cleanser, which is a liquid-gel that dispenses easily and feels great. It also contains soybean oil. It has an unusual botanical fragrance - floral, fresh, fruity - more like cucumber than rose.

I can see why so many women have discovered it before me. If you share your house with a man, you may be fighting for the Fresh! You can find it at Neiman Marcus, Sephora, and Fresh's Web site, along with the rest of Fresh's Soy Collection. This mild cleanser has earned a permanent spot at my house.

Heads up: Jawn Marques, Creative Director of Fresh, is coming back in June! We are having a Fresh party at Neiman Marcus after work. E-mail me if you'd like to attend.

bareMinerals Deep Cleansing Foam

Bare Escentuals' new bareMinerals Deep Cleansing Foam ($20) is really nice. One of four items in the new bareMinerals Skincare line, this creamy, luxurious cleanser is powered by a 100% pure RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex to help you enjoy increased cell turnover, fewer fine lines and wrinkles, and the famous bareMinerals naturally luminous glow.

Extracted from nutritionally dense virgin soil, the proprietary RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex contains a blend of 72 essential macro- and micro-minerals that dramatically improve the appearance of skin by increasing cell turnover and providing antioxidants at levels significantly greater than blueberries or pomegranates.

The Deep Cleansing Foam deeply cleanses skin and lifts away impurities with a creamy lather that's non-drying. It takes only a pea-sized amount per application. Sometimes I read that part about a pea-sized amount and think, "Oh sure." This time, it's spot-on true. The formula bursts into a very rich, creamy lather when activated with water. One might have an initial impression that it will be hard to rinse off, given the richness of the lather. Not! It is easy to rinse away. Once rinsed, every trace of my makeup, including mascara, is gone, and my face feels good. I have been using the cleanser for a week and haven't ever felt dry after using it.

We had a giveaway contest for Deep Cleansing Foam and Purely Nourishing Moisturizer two weeks ago, and I was surprised there weren't more entries. Anyone who didn't enter to win this cleanser missed a good bet! It's extremely nice. I received my tube from the company about two days before our contest ended - not enough time to give it a thorough evaluation before the deadline. I would have urged you (implored you) to enter; it's fabulous. If you didn't win, you should definitely check it out at a Bare Escentuals store (or online), Sephora, or wherever you purchase bareMinerals. A $20 investment will take you far.

Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil

Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil ($32) has quickly become one of my favorite oil-based cleansers. This gentle, all-natural cleanser is extremely effective, removing my makeup and every trace of my mascara in a pleasant, easy wash. To my nose, it has a delicious, light citrus scent.

This multitasking cleanser removes makeup and skin impurities (i.e., environmental grime and dirt) while providing deep hydration. The non-greasy texture leaves the skin feeling moisturized, not tight or over-dried.

The first ingredient on the list is argan oil, followed by an impressive list of natural and organic oils that include almond, safflower seed, grape seed, and grapefruit peel oils. The oils effectively cleanse the skin's surface and renew the skin. The grapefruit peel oil has to be responsible for the luscious scent.

Sephora, the exclusive retailer for this cleanser, says this product is ideal for all skin types. I can tell you that my dry skin loves it. Argan oil is an effective natural cleanser, restoring the skin's natural moisture and pH balance. It is produced from the argan tree in the arid lands of Morocco. Rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, this organically grown ingredient is known to prevent skin dehydration, inflammation, hyperpigmentation, and excess production of sebum. Naturally, as with other Josie Maran products, Argan Cleansing Oil is formulated without a lot of the not-so-nice ingredients we like to avoid.

One of my favorite features of cleansers is a pump dispenser, and Josie Maran has obliged with an easy-to-use pump that requires no struggling. The box says to rub 3-4 pumps of the oil into dry hands and apply evenly over the face. Then wet the face and massage the oil into a rich milk. To remove it, rinse with water. It slides off very easily, leaving my skin feeling hydrated and clean. What more can you ask?

Josie Maran's Argan Cleansing Oil has a much nicer price point than some of the other cleansing oils I use. I highly recommend it. You can find it at Sephora, where it has Sephora's natural seal.

Now, if Sephora would just put up a heart-stopping 500-point or 1,000-point reward, I would be a happy customer. I've been building points for so long, my total is getting ridiculous. I don't want glittery eyeliner, men's products, and skin-care samples that aren't right for me. Even their free samples have been pretty boring (obnoxious fragrances galore), but you shouldn't really complain about free. While I'm whining about Sephora, I didn't like the padded envelope in which my last order arrived. Who likes to pay full price for squished boxes? Sorry, Josie. Not your fault!

NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash

NeoStrata's Foaming Glycolic Wash ($32) is a perfect cleanser for glycolic acid users who prefer a deep cleanser that will not cause irritation. I like glycolic acid products. My sensitive skin tolerates them with ease, and they exfoliate without the harsh actions of some physical exfoliators.

NeoStrata sent me Foaming Glycolic Wash before Christmas, and it has been my go-to shower cleanser ever since. I must have a pump applicator in whatever cleanser I keep in my shower. This one was designed with my pump preference in mind. Thank you, NeoStrata!

NeoStrata's most potent cleanser is formulated in an amphoteric system to capture the benefits of glycolic and lactobionic acid, while minimizing the potential for irritation. It's formulated with 18% glycolic acid and 2% lactobionic acid to gently exfoliate, unclog congested pores, and stimulate cell renewal. It prepares skin for optimal benefits of any regimen that follows.
  • It's a soap-free, pH-balanced face wash that is a very light foam.
  • It contains 18% glycolic acid to smoothe the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.
  • Lactobionic acid diminishes lines and wrinkles and smoothes the texture of "uneven" skin.
  • The cleanser is recommended for experienced glycolic acid users. I'm not sure I understand this last one, since I find Foaming Glycolic Wash gentle. Maybe that's because I don't leave it on my skin for a long time. When I'm in the shower, I'm often in "gotta move along" mode.
This cleanser was featured on The Today Show when Prevention magazine had a "Defy Your Age" series. You can see the feature at this link. It's a short read; I recommend you take a look. Prevention recommended using Foaming Glycolic Wash in the evening. No matter, use it whenever you want! Once/day is probably often enough, though.

NeoStrata does not recommend Foaming Glycolic Wash for sensitive skin. Oh well, my skin is extremely sensitive and reactive, and I have never had a problem using it. No burning, tingling, or after-cleansing irritation. I like it very much, and it's staying in my shower!

You can purchase the Foaming Glycolic Wash at NeoStrata's Web site, where you can learn more about NeoStrata skin care the its undeniable results. It's also available at SkinStore, SkinCareRX, Ulta, and Pure Beauty - at price points that are extremely attractive for state-of-the-art skin-care technology.

Kiehl's Photo-Age Deep-Action Exfoliating Cleanser

Kiehl's new Photo-Age Deep-Action Exfoliating Cleanser ($22) is one of four new Photo-Age products offered by Kiehl's to un-do ultraviolet (UV) damage. The exfoliating cleanser breaks apart surface discoloration and stimulates cells to restore fresh, even-toned skin. It's a very creamy cleanser that contains gently rounded scrub grains.

Relying on their extensive pharmaceutical expertise and botanical knowledge, Kiehl’s has introduced a line called Dermatologist Solutions Photo-Age Corrector, clinically-demonstrated to powerfully reverse visible and invisible signs of UV damage. In addition to the exfoliating cleanser, there is a toner, spot treatment, and moisturizer. You can see them all at this link. All of the new products are reasonably priced - something we have come to expect from Kiehl's.

What UV damage can we see on the skin's surface? Brown spots, discolorations, dullness, blotchiness, and fine lines. Unfortunately, there is also invisible damage below the skin's surface due to past, cumulative sun exposure, This damage has not yet risen to the skin surface, but trust me, it will!

I purchased the Photo-Age Deep Action Exfoliating Cleanser. It creates a very creamy and gentle lather and did not irritate my sensitive skin at all. You have to make sure not to use it too close to your eyes, so I used my eyelid scrubs before I used the cleanser. Kiehl's new cleanser did leave me squeaky clean, which means it cleared out any dead skin cells that were present on the surface of my face, along with any oil and other "stuff" I don't want to consider. I used a heavy-duty dose of moisturizer afterwards, and I was "good to go."

With any $20 purchase at Kiehl's online, you will receive three samples. Why would you do that this week when you could visit or call Neiman Marcus at Mazza Gallerie, mention Best Things in Beauty, and get two bags of goodies and an entry into a drawing for a $500 shopping spree?

Perricone MD Nutritive Cleanser

Perricone MD Cosmeceuticals Nutritive Cleanser ($60 for the super size) is an anti-aging cleanser that features two key patented Perricone anti-aging ingredients, Alpha Lipoic Acid and DMAE.

Nutritive Cleanser is gentle enough to be used twice a day. It washes away makeup and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. The ingredients provide anti-aging benefits and help reveal a brighter and smoother skin surface. After cleansing, your face will be perfectly prepared for your skin-care treatment products.

I was given a generous sample of Nutritive Cleanser that I have been using every night. It removes makeup with ease (even mascara), and it leaves my face feeling nice and clean. Even though cleanser is on the skin for a very short period, I have noticed some tightening of my pores after use, fortunately without any taut feeling. The cleanser has a very pleasant powdery fragrance that doesn't linger past its removal - perfect!

Besides being paraben-free, Nutritive Cleanser has two ingredients designed to bring back your glow.

Alpha Lipoic Acid
  • The ultimate antioxidant protects cells
  • Diminishes fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration
  • Refines skin texture
  • Reduces pore size, puffiness, imperfections, and uneven skin tone
DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol)
  • Provides ultimate contouring benefits to skin beginning to lose elasticity
  • Delivers lifted, tightened, and toned appearance to the skin
  • Diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
You can see the Perricone MD products at the Perricone MD Web site (where the first 400 orders will come with deluxe samples of Cold Plasma and No Foundation Foundation), Nordstrom, and Sephora. I am trying other well-regarded Perricone products, including the new, award-winning Cold Plasma, and can't wait to tell you more. So far, the results have been great!

If you are interested in learning more about skin care and Dr. Perricone's recommendations, you might have fun checking out his blog, Daily Perricone!

One more thing...Perricone has new packaging, so you will see less "clinical" packaging replacing the packaging shown here. The sleek, new packaging is color-coded, with green for age prevention, bronze brown for age correction, silver for ageless, and blue for clear skin. I like it!

Best Drugstore Beauty: L'Oreal Go 360 Clean Facial Cleanser with Scrublet

What a catchy idea! L'Oreal's new Go 360 Clean Facial Cleanser with Scrublet ($5.98 to 6.99) is a deep facial cleanser that has its own little scubbing pad that pops right into the front of the container - you won't misplace the little devil! This product should appeal to women and men.

The Scrublet is a super-soft, flexible cleansing disc that applies the cleanser with 500 extra-supple touch points that gently glide across the skin, activating the cleanser formula on contact, creating a high-foaming lather. This rich lather gives the pores a good workout, unclogging them, and gently removes traces of everything that doesn't belong there - oil, dirt, and makeup. L'Oreal says the new cleanser is clinically proven to clean better than traditional cleansers, resulting in more beautiful skin.
  • Smaller pores: Go 360 Clean shrinks the appearance of pore size and refinishes the skins surface to reveal skin with more clarity.
  • Deeper cleansing: Unique formulas reach down deeper to every last pore.
  • Softer skin: Sweeps away dead skin cells for an extraordinary softening and smoothing effect.
  • Easy to use: The Scrublet is fuss-free.
There are formulas available for every skin type. The Deep Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin (my choice) is a soap-free lotion that treats sensitive skin with extra-gentle care. The fragrance-free formula features glycerin and shea butter to condition skin while gently and effectively cleansing.

The Deep Facial Lotion Cleanser and Deep Cream Cleanser, both oil-free, have notes of naranji, orange flower, and mint for a refreshing fragrance and feel on skin. The formulas help reduce oily areas, dry skin patches, and blemishes with their deep cleaning, pore-by-pore action.

The Deep Exfoliating Scrub is a gentle, but effective scrub that exfoliates skin with natural apricot seed powder and salicylic acid to reveal perfectly clean, smoother skin. With a fruity apricot fragrance, this exfoliating scrub is gentle enough for daily use.

This is the perfect time of year to introduce scrubs that remove dead skin cells, which make you look and feel dry. The Go 360 Clean Facial Cleansers are pretty cool and deserving of the "Best Drugstore Beauty" label.

You can purchase these right now at CVS and Walgreens. By January, you should be able to buy them at all stores carrying L'Oreal products.

Korres Materia Herba Toning Cleansing Foam

The Materia Herba line is the first certified natural and organic line from Korres. So I had to try it! I purchased three products, and the first one I used was the Materia Herba Toning Cleansing Foam ($27).

I read at Beautorium that Materia Herba features highly effective, natural active ingredients formulated in collaboration with an advanced Swiss skin care lab. Ninety-five to 100% natural and organic, certified by Ecocert, Materia Herba products are clinically proven to boost the skin’s hydration up to 65%.

The Materia Herba line is free of parabens, propylene glycol, silicones, sulphates, ethanolamine, synthetic colors, and other things that purists hate. And no animal by-products or testing. Sounds good, right? It's a soap-free, gentle, and effective. Materia Herba Toning Cleansing Foam washes away makeup and impurities, while protecting against dehydration, free radical damage, and inflammation.

How does it do that? Naturally derived salicylic acid breaks up oil and bacteria and sloughs off dead skin cells, controlling blemishes and purging pores. Glyco-oligosaccharide, a biological balancing agent, gently cleanses and purifies the skin using natural sugars. Natural glycolipids (derived from soy, sunflower, and wheat) enhance the cleansing process by neutralizing the oxidation of oils and proteins, which can lead to inflammation and premature aging. Certified organic hamamelis floral water’s mild astringent and skin-soothing, anti-inflammatory benefits are included to reveal a fresh, glowing complexion. Certified organic olive leaf, a non-oily extract, provides antioxidant protection against both external and internal free radical damage. Centaurea floral water calms the eyes and soothes the skin.

This cleanser is marketed for all skin types. While it's nice on my dry, sensitive skin, the ingredients tell a story that makes it perfect for combo and oily skin as well. After using it, I feel clean and soft. That's enough for me! This has become my morning cleanser, stashed in my shower, where I use it to wash away the night's dreams. I love the pump container; it's fast and convenient.

I bought mine from Beautorium. It's also available at Sephora and Korres.com. Check for special offers!

Vichy Calming Cleansing Solution for Face and Eyes

Ever want to clean up without using water? How about on those makeup-free Sundays, when you want to go to sleep feeling clean and fresh, but just can't face (no pun intended) the full face-wash routine? Vichy has the cleanser for you!

Calming Cleansing Solution ($14) is a soap-free, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, colorant-free, gentle, lightweight cleansing lotion that gently lifts makeup, excess oil, sunscreen, and anything else that shouldn't remain on your skin. It calms your skin, while leaving its natural moisture barrier in place. The solution contains a rose extract rich in phytophenol, known for its soothing properties. It also contains Vichy Thermal Spa Water, rich in mineral salts and oligo essentials with proven soothing properties that strengthen the skin's natural protective function. This is an excellent product for sensitive or irritated skin. You can use it as an eye makeup remover too! This cleanser is a good one for men and women. Just put it on a cotton pad and wipe gently.

I was introduced to it at my local CVS Healthy Skincare store. Ever since, it's been a bathroom staple.

Vichy became part of the L'Oreal group in 1955, and today it is L'Oreal's second largest skin care brand, currently is distributed in more than 70 countries and a leading dermo-cosmetics brand in European and Canadian pharmacies. In the last few years, Vichy has worked to bring the brand to the U.S. market by securing space within the in-store skin care boutiques at select CVS, Ulta, and Duane Reade locations.

Vichy has a U.S. Web site where you can get an express or full skin analysis. CVS Healthy Skincare stores also offer that service. I'll be reviewing another fabulous Vichy product soon: the new Aqualia Thermal Mineral Balm.

The Vichy Web site has free shipping and a sampling offer until October 9. Of course, you could just stop by your local CVS and learn more about this wonderful French company. CVS has samples too.

Sisley's Cleanser/Toner Combo for Dry, Sensitive Skin

Over the next month, I will be writing occasionally about the Sisley products I recommend. Today, we start with the Sisley cleanser and toner I have been using lately. I returned to them recently after a few years of flirting with other products. A blogger has to keep testing, so I'm sure I'll flirt again! I'll warn that these products are pricey, but each lasts a long time.

Sisley, one of the most prestigious brands in the cosmetics industry, is known for an approach that uses natural, high-quality plant extracts in beauty products. Each natural extract contains key active ingredients that perform a specific action. The synergy of the ingredients results in highly effective botanical products - optimized for skin and body care - and each of Sisley's products is backed with years of extensive research. These are not flash-in-the-pan products - once introduced, they stick around.

The Lyslait Cleansing Milk with White Lily ($115) was developed for dry and/or sensitive skin. It's a creamy cleanser that removes makeup effectively without stripping the skin of its moisture barrier. It leaves me feeling smooth and silky without any residue. It takes off all but the most stubborn eye makeup. There are six active ingredients.
  • Orange Blossom and Linden smoothe and soften
  • White Lily and Woodmallow moisturize and soften
  • Sunflower softens, but also nourishes and revitalizes
  • Vitamin E is an antioxident
After massaging the cleanser into your face and throat, you are supposed to remove it with tissue before toning. I simply wash it off with a few splashes of water - old habits die hard.

Sisley's Lyslait testers observed significant improvements in clarity, luminosity, softness, clarity, and comfort. I have to agree.

The next step is the alcohol-free Botanical Floral Toning Lotion ($98). Just use a cotton pad and wipe it over your face and neck - simple. Its ingredients are a garden in a bottle.
  • Cornflower softens
  • Witch hazel decongests
  • Harpagophytum has an anti-inflammatory effects
  • Rosewood oil stimulates micro-circulation
  • Geranium oil purifies
  • Lavender helps the skin heal, stimulates cell growth, and reduces inflammation
  • Malt repairs the dermo-epidermal junction
  • St. John's Wort protects
  • Wheat Proteins smoothes
  • Rose refreshes and softens
  • Sage purifies and tones
This toner preps your skin for the skin care products you use next.

There is a certain je ne sai quoi that comes with using these products - they make my nightly cleansing chore pleasant!

Sisley makes other cleansers and toners, and a Sisley rep can help you select the right products for your skin type. One very nice thing is that most of their products are available in samples, so you can try before you "invest." The Sisley reps at Neiman Marcus at Tysons Galleria, who have always been generous with samples, are living proof that these are great products - they all have beautiful skin!

You can find Sisley products at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, some Nordstrom stores, and even Amazon and Costco, where you may find some "best prices." Of course, you don't get consultations and samples at Costco!
