The Friday Forum - March 22

From hellebores to early daffodils to blooming plum trees, there's botanical evidence that it's spring. You'd never know it by walking outside. My star magnolia is trying to bloom, but the flowers are staying tucked into their buds. They know it's cold - not bitter cold, but dismaying cold. That poor groundhog lost his credibility this year. I guess the good news is that late frosts may not destroy the flowers - when they arrive. The other good news is that the immediate DC area is not covered with snow, as I know a great part of the country is.

Today is World Water Day! To celebrate this charitable recognition of the importance of clean water to life, Giorgio Armani Parfums has introduced a new fragrance: Acqua di Gioia Eau Fraîche ($58). I am supposed to have a sample on the way, and I had hoped to be able to give you a first-hand impression today. I'll have to do that later.

Actually, the whole month of March is World Water Month. UNICEF has a major role this month by raising funds to provide at least 200 days of clean, safe drinking water to children. What we take for granted is a luxury in some countries.

Acqua di Gioia Eau Fraîche blends sweet, delicate jasmine with subtle and floral green tea accents. The top notes burst to reveal grapefruit, ylang ylang, and cedarwood.  The middle notes develop to include mandarin, water jasmine, and a brown sugar accord. Lastly, the base notes passionately envelop the skin to lay forth bright primofiore lemon, a whisper of jasmine accord. and a hint of soft musk. I think it sounds luscious. Armani calls Eau Fraîche "a refined, tender, and fresh interpretation of Acqua di Gioia, revealing a vibrant femininity in perfect harmony with nature."

For every purchase in March of Acqua di Gioia Eau Fraîche, Acqua di Gioia, Acqua di Giò, and Acqua di Giò Essenza in March, Giorgio Armani Parfums will donate $5 to support the UNICEF Tap Project. Armani will also donate $1 for the first 50,000 people who "like" their Acqua for Life Facebook page from March 1-31, 2013. I like the idea of buying for beauty - the beauty of philanthropy.

I think I mentioned (perhaps in comments) that I'm very interested in CC creams. While BB creams are nice, they were targeted at a younger age group than mine. CC (color corrector) creams are being designed for everyone. Chanel has one on the way (isn't a double "C" the perfect product for Chanel?), and Clinique's will arrive at counters in April. The new Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream Hydrating Colour Corrector Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($35) is intended to neutralize blotchy redness, turn sallow skin peachy, and make ashy skin luminous and bright, while and providing long-term hydration for the skin and sun protection. Six shades will be offered. I'll tell you more about it when I get my hands on one.

It's time for the Friday Forum. I love this part of our week. What new products did you discover this week? Did you find any deals you couldn't resist? Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Do you have a question others might be able to answer? Want to talk about skin care? What's new in your life? Just use the comments. Don't be shy. Just make sure to ask any question you might have over the weekend. By early the next week, most (not all) readers will have moved on.

Don't forget to enter this week's giveaway contest for Sephora's Give Me Some Lip Lip Sampler. The deadline is tomorrow, Saturday, March 23, at midnight. The sampler is a fun way to try some new looks.

Yes, by the sounds of the birdies and the red squirrels, spring is here. Supposed to start heating up in April! Holy Cow! Meanwhile, I am still loving my LMDB Melange eye palette. I use the charts you provided in your wonderful feature. At this point, I would buy any LMDB eye palette sight unseen. Do you still see the foxes?

I finally bought a Dior Addict and a Dior Addict Extreme lipstick. I thought they would be too slippery and not last, so I always passed them over. Holy cheeseballs! I love them! I'm already planning to get several more. I have Sjogren's Syndrome and have to take sips of water every few minutes to keep my mouth from drying out. Somehow these lipsticks are still on my lips after 3 hours and they're not like those funky dry "long wearing" formulas. (P.S. I don't use a straw...trying to avoid lip lines).

Nemo, my fox disappeared. I sometimes hear foxes barking at night, but my faithful visitor is gone. Makes me sad.

Glad you are enjoying your eye shadows!

Laura, I laughed out loud when I read "holy cheeseballs." That's a new one for me, and I love it!

And now, you see why we love Dior lips so much. :)

Hi Charleston Girl!

Spring is here where I am-it was almost 80 yesterday. Reminded me that summer is coming, and I hate summer. I am enjoying the blooming flowers and spring colors.

I finally jumped into Armani eyeshadows. I bought one of the quads--#3 Pantelleria--and I love it! The shadows apply so beautifully. I was hesitant to get the greens because I have green eyes and green shadows tend to wash them out; however, your swatches were so beautiful that I couldn't resist. I'm glad I took the chance. I also bought a Clinique eye stick in Whomping Willow based on your swatches. It's so pretty.

How is your foot feeling, Charleston Girl? I hope it's better!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Hi Charlestongirl,

Happy Friday! It's still chilly in Chicago and the flowers aren't out yet, however it feels great to have more time with the sun already!

This week my bottle of Hermès Jour de Hermès came in the mail, which was cause for excitemaent! It came with a little sample of a Bond No.9 that I'm looking forward to trying too.

Hi CGirl!

It's about time you treated yourself to Armani! That quad is to-die-for gorgeous.

Foot is a tad better, thanks, but not near where I want it to be. Need to go to the warehouse store, and I'm dreading it.

Hi Dovey!

I love, love, love my Hermès Jour de Hermès.

Which Bond? I have a sample of the new Central Park South. Expected to love it, but it's too sweet - even for me! A fresh floral – top notes of grapefruit flower and blackcurrant buds, a seductive heart-note of jasmine and lily of the valley, and a base of classic wood. I can't figure out what is giving me the sweet blast.

Hi M. Parker,

Isn't Laura's expression rich? It's my new favorite. I think I need to steal it and use it here.

Prescriptives used to make an aubergine mascara, it looks amazing on green/green-hazel eyes. I haven't seen one in years. Thanks for the introduction to two!! Still on a foundation hunt - need a radiant, moisturizing formula for very fair skin with pink and yellow undertones (really pink, but a perfect match, I've learned, makes me look dead!) Ordered MAC's new mineralize moisturizing foundation the second it was released on their website - not such a good idea. Should have waited a week for them to get to the stores. I was just so sure I was NW20, because I believe NC means yellow, which doesn't look good on me. Well...the texture is divine, moist and glowy, but the coverage is light to medium at best. The NW20, the lightest cool shade they offer, is a drop too dark and peachy for me; again, I need a little yellow in the mix to not look sallow, but not too much or I look yellow! Even when I put powder over foundation,it seems to turn more yellow, but in this case just made the shade darker. If you can find a shade match, and need a light coverage moisturizing make up, this may be for you. I guess I could try to mix it with NC15 or 20, but that seems too much work for something I just don't love. I also got the back ordered Pro line full covrerage cream foundation. I never would have ordered two at a time, it just came that way. The NW20 in this formulation is a drop lighter, but may still be too pink for me. It is advertised as an emollient foundation, but it was drier than any other cream foundation I've tried. If I need a full coverage cream, I love Bobbi Brown's foundation stick, but her colors are too yellow for me unless I am tan, and that doesn't happen much any more! Those were my two discoveries this week, any suggestions from you pale faces out there? Have a great weekend and a great holiday everone!

Hi Everyone- I ordered the Cosmetic Skin Solutions Vitamin C+E Serum and the Hydra B5 Gel that Eileen recommended a few weeks ago. I had been looking for a good serum with a reasonable price. I ended up with a bundle pack through Amazon that included eye serum and a sunscreen. The results after 1 1/2 weeks have been wonderful. My redness splotches and spots have been fading and my skin tone is evening out quite beatifically. My skin still tends towards oily at 53. The serum has also seemed to regulate the oil production. Overall- extremely pleased!! Thanks for the great advice!

I got ahold of Guerlain's Blush G Sakura, available only in Asia. A friend returned from a trip to Japan with one for me! It is lovely, not as bright as the picture and very wearable. I love to have things that are rare and somewhat hard to find. I wonder how long your foot will take to heal? Sounds like at least 3 more weeks. What a drag.

Ellen, I have dry skin and had many issues with foundations. Last year, I found Laura mercier's Creme Smoothe foundation. It's great with dry skin and comes in a good range of colors (Karla Sugar has some older swatches of the line). I don't use it often as I rarely wear a full face of makeup and it is a smidge too full-coverage for me, but my skin is flawless when I do. I recommend checking it out at Sephora or Nordstrom.

It's a beautiful sunny, clear day in Seattle, long overdue. Still nippy, but great for long walks with happy dogs. I hope that you're well into your recovery.

This week I experimented with drugstore products. I was particularly interested in finding a foundation alternative for those days when using my standby Koh Gen Do seems like overkill. Drugstore BBs were a bust (too dewy an minimal coverage). I ended up with Colorstay Whipped in two shades, which I've mixed successfully into a match. Long lasting, plays nice with my dry sensitive skin, beautiful finish and inexpensive; I am well pleased. Today I had reached for it and started applying it, even though I would have normally reached for Koh. I now feel even more justified in indulging on some of the new collections about to hit the counters.

Ellen, Armani! Go look at the foundations. You have a choice of a few. All great.

Charlestongirl said...

Hi Susan,

That is great stuff. Eileen knows her skin care.

Charlestongirl said...

Hey Meredith,

I wanted that. At one point months ago, I had someone in Asia shopping for it for me, but she must have dropped off the search. It looked divine.

Doctor said six weeks in the boot. I wonder if I'll make it.

Charlestongirl said...

CGirl, I have never worn hers. There are just too many choices. :)

Charlestongirl said...

Good for you, Marta! I have to learn to do that.

Dovey said...

Hi Charlestongirl,

Thanks for the reply--- The Hermes is definitely love! As for the Bond No.9, it's the Madison Ave sample. It's my first time trying a Bond No.9 in general so I'm looking forward to it!

i've tried the Chanel CC cream. However, it's not really impressive and i am quite disappointed. I much prefer Omorovicza's BB Complexion Perfector and Laneige's snow BB soothing cushion which is such a fun product and one of the best BB cream i've ever used. it's very sheer, yet it makes my skin looks radiant and supple. Even my eye area look rested after applying this. One of the very few product that can achieve this. I am looking forward now to trying out Chanel's Les Beiges. The packaging alone is so enticing. Can i say this again, but i know i'm going to really miss Peter Phillips as the creative director.

Oh I will definitely have to check out that new Giorgio Armani scent. It sounds so cool and light and refreshing--the perfect summer fragrance (I hope)!

Hope you're continuing to feel better and better every day, CG! Enjoy your weekend!

Count me intrigued by CC creams. I thought I was the only one who could tend toward an ashy complexion. I have the strangest neither warm nor cool light skin tones which are typically very difficult to match. I'm not beige, I'm not yellow, I'm not pink or orange and foundations pull heavily in these directions on my skin. I usually settle on foundations with slight yellow or neutral undertones and though not perfect, at least I do not look like I'm wearing a mask

Hi,i want to share a comment about the new Perfume Aqua Di Gioia - Eau fraîche.
I use to wear the regular Aqua Di Gioia for women and i like it a lot. I wanted to give a try to the new version, Eau Fraîche, for summer.
It last 2 hours max on me (after that, i did not smell anything).
A friend tried it and it stayed 4 hours but the scent was very light.
I will be back to the original one.
I am curious about the new J'adore, version "Voile", from Dior... my next test... - Marie
