The Friday Forum - April 19

I had to put up a photo of spring's renewal, even though this has been a horrible week. As I write, the whole Boston area is shut down, and the police are searching for the remaining living terrorist who is responsible for the Boston Marathon tragedy - it's pretty clear they found their men. I hope with all my heart that Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev is taken into custody or even killed with no more bloodshed.

How could he and his brother, both living in the United States for years, harbor so much hatred? Why would they want to kill and maim people? I read this morning that a man named Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev won a $2,500 scholarship in 2011 from the city of Cambridge. It was repaid with bombs?

As I write, NBC is reporting that they think they know where Tsarnaev is hiding. They have also reported that there may have been additional threats on the city, leading to the total shutdown in Boston. Clearly, it's a very fluid situation. Boston needs a guardian angel.

My thoughts have also been in West, Texas, where a fertilizer plant exploded, killing employees and the first responders who were already there fighting a fire. The immediate area is devastated. Many lives have been lost or affected in the town of 3,000 people.

It's been a tough week to feel normal. Our whole country - actually the world - has been affected, forcing us, once again, to think about terrorists (and industrial disasters) and the fact that they can strike anywhere at any time. It's hard to imagine the loss that so many feel this week.

I'll keep the beauty news short today out of respect for much larger and more important happenings.

I know that many of you are waiting with me for the Tom Ford Summer 2013 Collection. The one thing I can tell you with assurance is that most of Tom Ford's color collection representatives haven't got a clue when they will receive the collection. First I was told April 15 on counter. Then I was told any day this week. Yesterday, I got a call from Bergdorf Goodman telling me they will have the collection at the counter on April 29. I went to Neiman Marcus three times this week looking for it. I wouldn't recommend you mimic my craziness. Someone will let us know when the collection appears on counter and for sale. It better be worth all this drama.

It is time for the Friday Forum. Perhaps in a few hours, the second Boston bomber will be in custody. It appears something is afoot right now. My attention will return to beauty once that happens. In normal times, I love this part of our week. We can certainly talk about the events of the week, and we can talk beauty. What new products did you discover this week? Did you find any deals you couldn't resist? Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Do you have a question others might be able to answer? Want to talk about skin care? What's new in your life? Just use the comments. Don't be shy. Just make sure to ask any question you might have over the weekend. By early the next week, most (not all) readers will have moved on.

Don't forget this week's giveaway contest for Bobbi Brown's Lilac Rose Shimmer Brick. It's a beauty. The deadline for entries is tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, at midnight.

Where are these men from? I am GLAD one is dead and I hope they take out the other one. Dead, dead, dead. Yes, it has been a horrid week. Look at the mockery that gun control has become? Meanwhile, something happy. It appears there is a powder eye quad as part of the CHANEL summer collection. It is called Metamorphose, and is comprised of lovely greens and what looks like a dark blue. I want it. Don't know if it is going to be available on counters or online only. Gotta have happy.

Nemo, the entire Chanel summer collection is on chanel.com including Metamorphose. Wonder what those colors really look like. You know how one can't tell from looking at chanel.com's swatches.

I am going off to my physical therapy session and trying to ignore all these lovelies! I did ***finally*** order the Guerlain Meteorites this week during Sephora's 15% off sale. Can't wait to get them. My first high-end makeup purchase since last November!

Re the horror in Boston and Texas, I can only pray for the victims, their families, and all the people who came to the rescue.

Best to you at your therapy, Rosemary. I read now that there are 3 suspects--one dead. It is hard these days sometimes to keep going. But we must, and we must have happy things to look forward to. Like the CHANEL and the Guerlain.

I've seen the news a while ago and I was happy to know that one of the suspects is dead already. I do hope that the other one will be caught by the police. They have caused a lot of commotion and they should pay for what they've done.

Yes, please Anonymous. Sorry for the delay here - working on a proposal. Please share.

Glued to the television and hoping they take down the second man. How can these men assume all the benefits and advantages of living in the USA for years and then turn around and bomb their citizens. I have ZER,O absolutely ZERO, sympathy for them and do not think they deserve to live. Period.

I'm watching a few items of Tom Ford trickle into Saks, but cannot find any information on shade names etc..for this collection. It's always so bizarre with new Tom Ford collections. We never seem to be privy to pre-release information other than a small promo shot. The TF website has nothing.. Rather surreal really. I want these items..BAD. I'm stalking Neimans, Bergdorf and Saks..

Happy Friday and your friends to the north are very sympathetic to the events unfolding in your country this week.

Also, the summer collex is up on saks.com!

I'm ordering the gloss and the tw new cream shadows, which I love! The four from last summer served me well.

Nemo, I have to shamefully admit I'm feeling fairly vengeful too.

You can find that Chanel treat at Chanel's Web site.

Hi Rosemary, I ordered a few of the Guerlain summer treasures from the boutique in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, it takes a week for me to get their packages, so I'll see them mid-week next week. Wish I could afford to pay the crazy overnight rates. Alas, I can't.

Like other national tragedies, the stories of the victims, their families, and the many citizens who rushed into danger to help are sad, inspiring, and horrifying. These brothers wanted attention? I've had my TV on since 5:00 am - with no understanding of the motives for such cruel acts.

Charlestongirl said...

Happy birthday, Anonymous! I can't find it on the Saks site, but I haven't given it my full time and energy.

Charlestongirl said...

Thanks, wwendalynne. I think anyone who can leave a TV on in the background has. Another unsettling day.

I hope the 19-year old surrenders - if only to explain why he did it before he is convicted and executed. Do I love the death penalty? No. Here however...probably the reason the American people want to keep open the possibility of the ultimate punishment. I won't get into it here, but I am bothered by those convicted and later proven to be innocent. It's pretty clear right now that this kid isn't innocent.

They have the two cream shadows and the gloss "pink lust" - its the squeeze tube gloss- and toenail polish in vapor up in the TF beauty section on saks. I'm buying them, if you sign up a new email you get 10% off, and who doesn't like a discount on TF?

They don't have the two cream blushes and the new peach highlighter up yet.

Also, here's the sick bastard bombers twitter,,,,, chilling to read!

Like many of you, I'm going about my day with my attention firmly fixed on the events in Boston. The two brothers knew they lived in a technologically advanced country where their identities would be quickly discovered and yet they embarked on a mission of mayhem anyway. That tells me that they had lost touch with reality and that their distorted perception and all-consuming anger, hatred, and violence destroyed their humanity long before they took it upon themselves to murder and maim other people. Law enforcement hasn't been on a manhunt; they've been on a monster hunt.

As for the tragedy in Texas, as horrific as that blast was, we can at least understand how and why it happened. That knowledge doesn't bring people back to life or mend them, but at least we know that those good people didn't suffer because of the twisted beliefs of some lunatic making life and death decisions.

Hi Meredith,

Last week you asked about the difference between Guerlain's Terra Ora and Neroli. Christine at Temptalia did a FOTD using Neroli on 1/17. I was right about it being a bronzer/blusher. You definitely don't need any additional blusher with Neroli. Oh, and the bit of gold accent is just an overspray. The product is satin-matte. I imagine we'll soon be seeing swatches of Terra Ora.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the information about Tom Ford's summer collection. I'm so excited to learn that it is finally making its way into stores and on-line. I know what I'll be checking out later today :-)

The Boston and Texas tragedies are just heart rending. Little kids being killed and maimed for life. Other innocent people just going about their life doing nothing but running a race or going to work. When will this country wake up and accept the fact that there are many people, cultures, and organizations (terrorist) that truly hate us and will do anything to kill us? How many more children must die before our society finally understands this? My rant has NOTHING to do with politics and everything to do with common sense. I'm so distraught and angry about this. I've had it up to here with our society being so afraid we are going to offend someone or infringe on their privacy. Enough is enough.

I am just sick over what is happening in Boston. I am originally from Massachusetts and have relatives there (who are all safely at home with their doors locked) so I'm just imagining what my hometown is looking like today. I just want to know WHY? How could those kids think they could get away with what they did? How could they be so full of hate?

On the beauty front I too am anxiously awaiting the Tom Ford collection but this week was about Armani. I'm really enjoying my new bronzer. It's unlike anything else I have it is kind of golden and even matches some of the highlights in my hair. I'm also enjoying the lip lacquers. They had them in stock at my Armani counter. My favorite is #608 it is such a pretty, shimmering rose pink that is a my lips only better shade on me. I haven't tried the new Guerlain yet but I do have Diabolotine from the new Dior glosses and I prefer the Armani. To me the Armani is a little thicker and does fill in lines and give that glassy gloss effect. The Dior seems a little thin in consistency to me but I still like it.

I hope the monster who has Boston held hostage is caught soon and everyone there can have a good weekend.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Hi Eileen,

I'll bet we made that Saks SA's day. :)

Charlestongirl said...

Hi Meredith,

I've purchased the bronzer, but was told by Guerlain that the blush/bronzer has not yet arrived. Can't wait to get it!

Charlestongirl said...

Hi Anonymous,

Unfortunately, if you have ever ordered from Saks before, you can't get that discount. Sad face.

Charlestongirl said...

Hi Mariel,

They should indeed. One has. Let's hope the second and any co-conspirators are captured quickly.

Charlestongirl said...

Deb, with all the crazies out there - apparently the people our "civil liberties" protect, I have little hope that this kind of attack will ever end.

Charlestongirl said...

Jo, I really want 608. Earlier in the week, my NM still didn't have the new Lip Lacquers. What the heck?

Charlestongirl said...

Everyone,

What a day! I expected an end with an apprehension. I hope upon hope that the bomber gives himself up. Is he ready to kill again and die? If so, he will likely be a dead suspect.

I'm enraged that the bombers were afforded all the privileges of living in the US, but decided to murder innocent people. For what?

Anonymous said...

NM at Tysons had the lip lacquers on Monday...

Charlestongirl said...

Thanks, Anonymous. Guess I missed them.

Anonymous said...

Either that or the SA fibbed about the gloss I was fiddling with - wouldn't be unheard of, I suppose!

Charlestongirl said...

That's funny. Who knows? I'll look tomorrow.

I hope that while everyone remembers these sad events, everyone would also remember that far more often, innocent people die in the Middle East because of war and bombs, a lot of the time because of American soldiers.

Well, he was apprehended alive so hopefully no more terror in Boston. According to HuffPo, it looks like the DOJ has decided that he does not need to be Mirandized, under the public safety exemption, even though he is a US citizen. This is disturbing to me since it allows the government to do an end-run around the Constitution and one day maybe used me or any one of us that they've decided to brand troublemakers. It worries me since it seems every incident is used to take away our other rights such as speech, unreasonable searches, etc.

Having so many ties to the whole Boston area myself and with my family, I have found this week to be a tough one. Though I have found myself proud of my "peeps", both in the overwhelming response of offers of refuge for those that needed it (over 6,000 offers, that's New England hospitality for you!) and the show of support and appreciation for all who contributed with aide to the weeks' events. Boston strong! :-)

On another note, one I have been thinking of mentioning for a while, it might be just me, but what has been going on with Smashbox lately? I remember they used to be featured quite often on QVC with the lovely Holly Mordini (sp?), but I can't remember the last time I saw them on QVC, and I haven't seen many of their items pop up on blogs either. So, I may just keep missing their features (either on the Q or blogs), but has anyone else noticed their lack of presence either? Any ideas as to why? Just curious... :-)

I was trapped in pouring rain with a sleeping toddler in the carseat on the back when the Boston manhunt was happening. I read your tweets, thanks for the coverage CG!

Interestingly, I also heard a piece on the radio about the two brothers and this psychiatrist (apparently specialized in adolescent) speculate on how these two young men somehow have turned for the worse, while other people around them regard them as sociable (particularly the younger brother). In any case, it is interesting to listen yet sad and tragic. As a parent, especially a boy, it would be BEYOND my worst nightmare to have this scenario, yet at the same time, I feel the unthinkable pain of the victims.

One energy unleash another. I hope this won't become a cycle. My prayers are with everyone involved.
